Poor Carmack, I never imagined he'd end up working for Facebook.

I don't get what you mean by this comment, It wasn't Carmack's decisions to sell the company to Facebook it was Irebe's (the CEO) who's known for selling Gaiki to Sony.

Carmack unlike Irebe is working on the Rift I doubt he had a decision over something he had no control over.

im pretty sure he understood the joke the first time, what he was trying to say is that Carmack doesnt get jack out of that, so 2 billion reasons to sell the rift to facebook doesnt give any reason for Carmack to be ok with it...

As to this entire issue, hopefully they just fund it and it goes on as it did until now

That doesn't change the fact there was reasons why he would end up working for facebook. Whether those 2 billion reasons were in his control or not were not relevant to the original reply.

No one assumed he was okay with it either... just that there was 2 billion reasons why he'd find himself in that situation.

Instead of a hasty reaction, you could also just wait until the product has an official release and see whether it merits consideration at that time.

Zuckerberg probably thinks that after his success with facebook everything he touches turns to gold which is not the case to be honest.

Take whatsapp for example, after the news of him buying it, a lot of European users started to use other IM apps.

I can't say that OR is a bad thing but i can't say it's a good one either but i'm pretty sure that Facebook will take every chance it has to put adds into it to get some of it's money back.

Holy shit. Is that so you can have sex with your computer? I've seen the ones with a cable that you connect to your computer, but never one that actually has you pelvis-slamming your PC tower. I'm not sure I could ever get over the shame of using that.

You will be in a virtual space, just like the other person. All you might see is a 3D avatar. It's not like everyone will suddenly have 3D webcams to go along with their VR headset. (And do you really want to see the other person with the headset on her head.)

No, please don´t! This might be one of the greatest pieces of hardware in years, but I don´t want Facebook or Google in my games, my livingroom or anywhere else for that matter. Guess we can only hope the Kickstarter-Crowd makes enough noise for them to overthink that deal.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

The only thing that's been released are dev kits, the actual product hasn't even launched yet. Why not just wait and see if it's any good. If your issue is with Facebook making money off of it, you may want to look at the structure of a lot of conglomerates - take a stand against a cable company and you may find a mountain of entertainment and physical products that you'd have to also boycott.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Are you aware of what Facebook/Google are doing in terms of datacollecting and what an opportunity this is for facebook? I doubt that "earing more money with an entertainment product" is their main goal here, but more like a sweet bonus.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

WTF. Does your monitor collect your data? I hate this argument, and everybody uses it. It is nonsense.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Its rather sad, that it doesn´t make sense to you.. it will be a piece of hardware produced by Facebook.. for your home. Not sure what part you need to have explained further.
But to answer your first question: I dont think that my monitor collects my data.. while it wouldn´t be impossible, it would be very impractical.. not sure what that has to do with anything, but yeah.. ^^

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It has to do with the fact that the Oculus Rift is two monitors strapped to your head.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah, but a cellphone also has a display, but that doesn´t mean it cant be used for data-collection.. not sure what kind of argument that could be.

..you guys ARE aware that the Rift also is an input-device, not only output, right?

And the icing on the cake (according to Engadget):
