personal favorite color :D + I cant stand earbuds... + earbuds are bad for the wax in your ears and can damage your eardrum...

For 50 or less you're not going to get anything amazing. But Sennheiser HD201 / 202 could be a nice choice. If you had bigger budget, you could get Sennheiser HD518 or Audio Technica ATH-M50

I lucked out and bought Creative Aurvana Live! headphones from Amazon last Black Friday for ~$36.

I used to have the AKG K450 (broken now :(). Though a 'bit more expensive', it's a very good one. You might look at the cheaper models from AKG I'd say.

But in general, you can' get a GOOD over-ear headphone for under $100. If you really want good ones, expect to pay $150 or more. The Hifi headphones I own (BeyerDynamic DT990) are now close to 30 years old and back then they were DFL 350 (around €175 now, but add 30 years of inflation :D) and I think those are still the best headphones I've ever bought.

been looking myself, originally at gaming (surround), but am now thinking to just get a good all rounder as Razer have released their virtual surround thingy for free/charity till the end of the year. This has left me looking at a far better selection at around you price bracket. Personally I looking at the AKG K450 series and hopefully in the next couple of days I can pick up a pair a bit cheaper.

Just get Superlux HD 681 you wont get anything better for that price.
For something better i guess you would need to invest like 200 $
