not having positive rep
pretty much that, they impersonate you because you are trustworthy
Comment has been collapsed.
wow, you actually blacklist for calling out? never saw that before. ^^
Comment has been collapsed.
well, everybody can do what they want with the blacklist. but i would never blacklist someone because he called out a scammer. the calling out rule is good in general. but sometimes i am happy when someone points me to someone who is clearly a scammer*. a guy who does this will get a thank you from me, not a spot in my blacklist. ^^
*determining whether someone is actually a real scammer or not, can be quite difficult. that is why the calling out rule is correct, even in those cases. then again, there are cases where there is really no doubt...
Comment has been collapsed.
in my opinion calling out is not nearly as bad as regifting, or being an asshole. therefore i will not blacklist anyone just for that. but as i said, everyone can do what he wants.
Comment has been collapsed.
You are doing nothing but adding a person to your blacklist. Ya the dude is breaking the rules but your threat of a blacklist falls short.
Its like you are trying to dish out some sort of half-assed justice...
Are you Blacklist man? Putting forum rule breakers in place by putting them on your crappy blacklist?
Comment has been collapsed.
You know that you are yourself " a little bit" addicted to attention.
Seriously if the first thing you do after wake up, is writing some shit in a forum that you have to delete afterwards, cause your mind was in a bad mood.... maybe it would be really healthy for you to get a break from here and get a life, instead of constantly day by day insulting people in different threads.
On the other side, we all know that it´s hard to get rid of drugs....so just consider to change your communication-style and write also positive and friendly things instead....
now you can start to rant against me...if that gives you a great feeling
Comment has been collapsed.
Most people don't go to the forums, make a post, and instantly have the "calling out" rule come to their head. I never would since I've never seen a rule like that anywhere else in my 16 years on the internet. Can't blame em for forgetting about unnatural rules. Just remind them nicely, no need to blacklist them over it.

tell people to add you in your threads, always put a huge notice about impersonators, etc.
the only thing you can do is put warnings, but usually new users won't read and fall for a scam.
btw, put a list of impersonators in your steam profile and remove it from here.
Comment has been collapsed.
why are you telling me to remove the link? i didn't create this topic!
is my avatar too similar to the op?
i just said:
1 tell people to add you in your threads, always put a huge notice about impersonators, etc.
2 the only thing you can do is put warnings, but usually new users won't read and fall for a scam.
3 btw, put a list of impersonators in your steam profile and remove it from here.
1 he should ask everyone in the trade topics he creates to ADD him (so users getting invites from impersonators don't scam them), put a huge notice about people impersonating him (don't call out, just explain how impersonating works).
2 put warnings = read #1
3 i told him to remove the call out, i know this site rules very well, i've been around for 3 years, not 1.
Comment has been collapsed.
But you were making a huge deal about it with the OP, earlier in the thread. I would hate to see how you react to something you care about, since you "dont give a damn" about the blacklist.
Comment has been collapsed.
I had read up until this post. If you don't care about the blacklist, then why are you saying "OOOHH YOU CALLED OUT SOMEONE SO PEOPLE CAN AVOID BEING SCAMMED, IM BLAKLISTING YOU!!!!!!!!!!!" You are a self-contradictory moron who needs to kys. OH LOOK IM CALLING YOU OUT TO YOU!!!! WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU GONNA DO ABOUT IT? http://steamcommunity.com/id/BlankTerrent/

"crappy drama attention whore" you just described yourself, there. Also, welcome to blacklist.

"I don't want trouble"
I understand this but behaviour like that is not reasonable but rather rude, and there should not be any need to apologize or to do any explaining when the truth is just a click away or it suffices for the other party to actually pay attention to who they are replying. No need to bow down, it's better to leave them alone, if you are in the right then other people are most likely to rally in your favor, and if the other party blacklists you then well, it's not any real loss. Anyway, just my "two cents" in an internet board.

blankT is an asshole who is showing his true colors here, he is a hypocrite and a self-contradictory asshole.

You were the one starting all the unneccessary drama. Every offshoot of this thread, you are arguing with someone. If I could permanent* ban you i would. Permant is not a word. Motherfucker can't spell. And I haven't been on here that long, only three months. If I had known you could give gift games on steam for a giveaway, I would have many giveaways completed. I have a giveaway in progress, but you can't enter it anyways because you are on my blacklist. You never broke the rules, so I only blacklisted you. If you had broken the rules, I would report you. In the time I have been on steamgifts, you have only made one giveaway. For a DLC. Fuck off and stop being a dumbass.

Times like these i'm glad to break out the blacklist :D Some people need to understand the margin between helpful and rude. Also yelling in all caps :P

I just posted it in your Steam profile. Notice that he links his "reputation as a trader" to my feedback page on Steam Gifts. Unfortunately the guy who reported him on Steam Rep mistakenly reported me. I am trying to contact him so he can fix it. And thank you, I also wish you good day :D
Edit: I can't post in your Steam page, so I added you to post in the chat window, if that's ok.

"how-to-stop-being-impersonated"
Demand that Valve remove this moronic "feature" of being able to change your username, so everyone has a unique one like any other normal web service.
Comment has been collapsed.
The only good customer service is refunds. I always get my refund early and it is always approved.
Comment has been collapsed.
uh no, everyone has a unique steam ID already, all valve has to do is display it rather than it being in the html source, we do not need to be in the dark ages of no name changes or pay $10 to change your name like in MMOs
but regardless, all the potential victim has to do is click the fake profile's rep link, then click the steam profile link from steamgifts to notice it's not the same person, ez
Comment has been collapsed.
it's only ez, if you know what to do, and know how scammers try to trick you. people don't fall for scams every day, because they are all completely stupid, but because they don't know better.
btw, clicking the fake profiles rep link is not the best idea. it might lead to a different site even. use Enhanced Steam! then you have a link from the steam profile to the correct steamgifts profile. there is no better way to check if the guy is who he says he is.
Comment has been collapsed.
what i mean by ez is everyone should do it, know about it, spread the word, valve could make some prominent tips, etc
also important is for victims to learn rather than downrep thinking nothing unusual happened, would be hard to track them down though...

have you ever been in the following situation? you register on a service. you think it's most likely a one time thing. you choose a silly name. then you use that service more often, buy some stuff there, e.g. games. after a while you realize you can't change your user name. and you can't just make a new account, since your purchases kind of bind you to it, obviously. so now you have this one service where you have a different name from everywhere else. maybe even an embarassing name. believe me, i have been there. you don't want this. i was so happy when UPlay finally allowed for user name changes. ^^
Comment has been collapsed.
do you mean uPlay or Steam or what? my uPlay account is clearly older than 2 years, and i could change the name. ^^
Comment has been collapsed.
I attempted. I couldn't. It seems that it can't. Neither on new sites and games.
It seens there is a time border, older accounts can't.
I don't use it but reminding. Maybe it's now can be changed but it doesn't work or show as the new one on software or sites with more than 2 years.
Comment has been collapsed.
No. I have literally never been in this situation, and have used the same few user names for the past 20 years or so, going back to BBS's and Prodigy.
Comment has been collapsed.
but can you understand how annoying a situation like this would be? being able to change the user name is a wonderful feature. i wouldn't want to miss it. people asked Ubisoft for years to implement this.
Comment has been collapsed.
the correct way of making trading safe is not to cut every feature until there is nothing left. ;)
Comment has been collapsed.
if you trade only in steamtrades then it is the the responsibility of the others to look if they get added by a fake account or the real one and not yours.
Comment has been collapsed.
all you have to do is explain to them you don't need to give them keys for their mistake
Comment has been collapsed.
I would add links to their profile on my trade link and my profile so people can be aware of who they are
Comment has been collapsed.
Unfortunately, most of the time these guys will simply link to your trade feedback and people getting scammed will not go see your trade threads. Plus, if they manage to get people who are not SG members, they can't see your profile link. (The link doesn't show up for people who aren't logged in.)
By the look of it, the person who left the -rep registered here after getting scammed.
Comment has been collapsed.
I was looking at the Steamrep reports, and I chuckled hard when I found the impersonator filed a report after someone else scammed him out of a couple of cards.(By the look of it, someone figuring out he was an impersonator.)
Comment has been collapsed.
Its not your fault because they got scammed, they need to think better when doing a trade like that, dont give them anything for "their loss".
Comment has been collapsed.
I think people don't even think about adding the "real user", that is, clicking on the "Steam Profile" link on Steam Gifts/Trades. They just see the nickname, the avatar, and go along with it. I wouldn't worry that much about it, but the problem is that I'm the one taking the fall.

If you truly want to stop being impersonated, become someone not worth impersonating! (joking) I can't say I've had much problems with impersonators or at least not to my knowledge but I know I've seen a number of them, I don't think there's any surefire thing you can do to kill them. Most of the attempts at prevention have been mentioned above as far as I can tell.
Comment has been collapsed.
I don't think "impersonated" means what you think it means.
Comment has been collapsed.
A private profile does not have a description that's visible to others - thus "private".

A while ago,I didn't even know about ppl impersonating other ppl on steam gifts, whole idea never came to my mind. Guy adds me,shows me steam gifts profile with 300+ rep,and says he will trade me Dragon Ball X or Darkest Dungeon for my Hammerwatch. I clicked on visit steam profile button on his steam gifts profile, and saw a different profile. I was so confused,it took me good 5 mins to figure it out and thats how I learned about ppl impersonating other users :D
If ur stupid enough to be fooled by impersonator, and u menage to leave - rep to real guy,u should get ban or something, not a reward for being stupid. I mean how fricking hard is it to when u read someones trade thread,u click oh his name, and u have 4 buttons, whitlelist, blacklist, report and visit steam profile.
Someone adds u and says he will sell u GTA V for 2 keys,u go first. U get scammed for being stupid and greedy,u deserve it.
Someone adds u and gives u Textures steam gifts profile saying he him and wants to trade. Hes level 2 on steam, account 1 year old and has 5 games in library. U trade without checking anything and get scammed. U're stupid and don't care about ur money,u deserve it.
Don't trade with ppl that have nothing to lose, guy with 100+ rep on steam gifts,300 games and 3 years old account won't risk his reputation to screw u for few bucks, while on the other hand, guy with 10 games,1 year old acc and 5+ rep, doesn't loose anything. I really don't get ppl, they will give their money to someone they don't know without thinking twice, and then they cry when they get burned.

Don't get me wrong,I absolutely hate scammers, and think they should rot in hell. But I also feel people just don't care about their valuables and are lazy if they allow something like this to happen to them, and by this I only mean scams on steam. If a guy comes to u in real life, says he is director of Mercedes Benz, and will give u latest model for just 1000 dollars,u just give him money and wait while he goes and gets the car. Will u do it? U wont check is he who he tells he is,u wont look him up anyway,u wont ask about a car or ask to see it,ask that he brings a car then u give money,u just give him money and there is no blame on u when u never see him again?

Not me, but all too often scams are aimed at people aged over 80 or under 16, people with a low IQ or any other group with a lesser ability to 'defend' themselves against scams.
Everybody knows about at least a dozen scams you encounter as a tourist
http://scam-detector.com/travel-scams
I know It's the internet in this case, I'm even used to EVE Online where you MUST BE MORE PARANOID.
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Golden_Rules
But if we can try to do something about it we should not dismiss it so easily.
A lottery is sometimes called 'bad-at-math-tax' (when the government is in charge of lotteries at least)
Scams should not be a 'dumb-on-the-internet-tax' and combatted when they pop up.
I'm not TOO serious here :)
Comment has been collapsed.
U have a good point about target of scams, but I don't thin there are too many ppl aged 50 and above on steam. As for kids, there are many.so I get ur point there. As for real life scams,I won't go there because there are a lot of different situations, types of scams, and I have different opinion on them then for ones on steam. My bad for assuming that people that get scammed are all healthy and appropriate age,but I was manly referring to them, not meaning anything bad about a kids or ppl with lover IQ that get scammed, that's just terrible. But I think that every healthy and 16+ person should know better than to trust person they don't know with their stuff based just on their words and if that person doesn't lose anything if they don't keep to their promise.
I think it's a lot better to be strong and think for ur self, defend ur self and do everything u can to avoid bad stuff happening, than to be a victim and get sorry for without even trying to prevent bad stuff happening, which is sadly becoming trend for many aspects of real life. Every victim deserves help and sympathy, but in some cases,I can't tell u it wasn't ur fault at all and u shouldn't blame ur self even a tiny bit, because u could have known better, think before doing something,or stood up for ur self.
I too am not serious,I just enjoy talking with smart and polite ppl about our opinions and discussing them a bit too much and can be boring,so sry :D

Yeah, this has happened to me as well... I've spent countless hours trying to explain the situation to people who has left negative rep on my profile. It's basically zapped my will to trade any more at all.
The only way I could think of to "fix" this would be if SteamGifts put an editable text field visible on the actual feedback page. Since the scammers just send people to that page, and they never click off it, that's where the change needs to happen.
Comment has been collapsed.
Note to self... Never google Avatar topless man... I do not know why I did in the first place. Never again.
Comment has been collapsed.
Anyway, is there any way one can avoid being impersonated?
The only real solution would be to have a private profile
Anything that is public is easy to copy and with way things on the net are cached even if you change it i suppose there might be a place that has a cached version before it was public.
Other wise you just have to deal with it,or stop trading or change how you do.
I do not do much trading anymore mostly just bundle left overs, but i only trade with people i meet through TG chat and that i know for awhile,so maybe since i do very low trading i do not draw a lot of attention, and since most people i trade with now i know,i do not worry about rep
Comment has been collapsed.
And that would be why i said that would be the only real solution. They asked how to avoid it and that is the only way,if they can not see it,they can not copy it,there for they can no impersonate you as easy
wait wait,,,,they can use your screen name and avatar...
So i guess you are right though someone could impersonate me by just changing there name to mine and there avatar to mine, and those foolish enough to get scammed by someone just doing that deserve it anyhow as if that all it takes to trick them, they are to naive to be on the net.
Now if they take the time to copy things from your profile and other things it makes it seem more like they are who they say they are, when i was trading a bit more on Steam Trades i did get some invites from some that if you did not closer look at they had an almost exact copy of the real profile down to the game count and other stuff.
They can still do whatever they want but i still stand that as long as the profile is public it will be far easier to try trick other into being someone they are not.I have had people try and pretend to be my friends and contact me through pm while in a group chat, but i do more then just go by name and an avatar.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nothing to do with the topic really but it seems like you've got a great taste in music! Yay for Arch Enemy.

You know.. once an impersonator of me added me to friendlist. I can't even imagine his fuck it fail face..
I know I don't have much rep, dunno why he would impersonate me, but I guess that's because at that time I traded a lot. I'm staying away from trading now.. it's not worth it, more trouble than it's worth.
And sorry.. I don't really have much of a tip how to stay away from impersonators..

well i did have same problem, with my account like i have company account they did copy my name end logo.
What i did is reported at https://steamcommunity.com/dmca/create/ but only if have company account will work.

I mean, I know I can change my profile picture and etc, but so can the person who's impersonating me. In the past weeks I received 2 -rep feedback on SteamGifts/SteamTrades because of this. Someone even went as far as to report me on Steam Rep. I managed to contact one of the guys who got scammed and I proved him I was the real user (poor guy, I gave him 2 TF2 keys for his loss - he lost Alien Isolation). As to the other guy, he's still offline.
Anyway, is there any way one can avoid being impersonated? I already reported him on Steam and nothing changed so far.
