Dear SteamGifts,

I need your help..

here is my current hardware on my laptop.

Running 16GB RAM DDR3, 4th Gen I7-4770HQ Processor, Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit, Nvidia 330M.

Now here is my problem
I have more then enough GPU and CPU processor to play Space Engineers but since I recently updated my laptop to Service Pack 2(or 3) whatever the newest latest Windows update is.. All of my games have been lagging TERRIBLY. Now, I don't know if the windows update is the cause or not. But, Space Engineers went from about 60FPS down to about 3FPS now..really unplayable. and, The Amazing Spiderman went from 60 Fps down to about 11 FPS(and it was on high, and had to put it on low just to see things move which is 11 FPS).

So, what could be the problem? is a part in my laptop going out? or a bad update? Any FREE programs out there that can help diagnose my computer problems?

Help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Oh, and more information. Booting up takes forever and shows the Starting windows screen for about 10 minutes before it boots. Opening a Browser takes about 4 Minutes for firefox to popup. and my internet is really slow but speedtest says I get 40MBPS Down and 13MBPS Upload. So, what is going on??

How you scanned your computer with a firewall and malware scanner.

I took down the Firewall. and Malware scanned with Malwarebytes just last night when I went on a defragment,etc.. spree after the FPS drop thinking it might be a fragmented harddrive.. but the harddrive was only 2% fragmented maybe 15/20 bad sectors out of 2000?

On another note, it will take forever considering all the work documents and stuff I have on my laptop but.. I will probably do a fresh install of Windows 7. only problem is anyone know where to find a clean (non-pirated) copy of Windows 7 Home Premium? I have a valid serial but Sony never gave me a recovery or install disk it came pre-installed.

You do know its legal to download a pirated copy of windows 7 home premium, right? As long as you don't crack it and have a serial key from a valid purchase, its perfectly legal.

Also, make sure to download your drivers to a USB before you install the new OS or you'll probably not have network drivers working.

I believe I have Network drivers on a recovery disk I made when I had to do a first reinstall long ago but I didn't save the OS(stupid me) but i'll make sure just incase.

Also, didn't know it was legal to do that. But, Microsoft did provide me a link with my version but they told me it requires a valid serial which I have so it just finished downloading. But, I am going to try keenors way real quick to see if there is a recovery built into the Sony Vaio so will be back in a couple seconds to report back :D

Sounds like your Nvidia card isn't being used correctly. Play around in the drivers and see if you can force it in games.

Hmm, not really the kind of error messages I was expecting. I thought you have a hard drive issue. Although you could still check it with HD Sentinel: http://www.hdsentinel.com/

Make 2 partitions, one for Windows and one for data, like Steam, games, music, etc, that way you can just format C and not worry of losing all your data from D.

Okay, I may be a complete idiot. But, Can I do that??

Just looked. How big should I make windows part ion compared to Data?

Reserve ~100GB* for Windows partition (C:) and the rest for secondary partition (D:)

*You can reserve less in case you don't install that many programs. But some steam games wouldn't install on secondary partition, so you might want to play safe.

Not sure if it is relevant but my pc crashed yesterday while downloading and installing the update.. So, maybe it corrupted the latest windows update?

Should have said that, its definitely connected to that. Uninstall the latest update and reinstall.

Check the way your CPU and GPU are used when it is idle, it might be some scum stealing your computing power.

Concerning the windows reinstall. Laptops usually have hidden part of HDD with the reinstall process pre-installed.

E:

Use the Recovery Partition To Revert Your Sony VAIO TO Factory Default
While you should have a set of recovery disks for your Sony computer, you can actually use that recovery partition to restore your computer to factory condition.
Power on the computer and press F10 several times.
Choose Start Recovery Wizard
Follow the onscreen prompts.
The restore process should take less than an hour to complete. When finished, the computer will restart and you will be presented with a Sony VAIO that has been reverted back to factory defaults. Be sure to immediately run Windows Update, install an anti-virus (unless there is already one installed) and then reinstall your back-up data and programs. Your Sony computer should now run faster and be more reliable. Source

ur gpu is totally shit, its 4 year old, by seeing ur pc specs i think u came just for cpu not looking on gpu. try to installing nvidia 314 or 306 drivers, they are better than latest one (improves fps a lot) btw there is not sp2 or 3 for w7
and btw ur gpu does not meet minimum requirements for the game u said gf8800 is much better than ur 330m

The laptop is going on almost 5 years old.. I cannot upgrade the GPU its soldered onto the motherboard.. the computer tech was only able to upgrade it to 4th gen a couple months ago as this version allows it.

I am planning on purchasing a new gaming laptop in the next couple months but waiting to see whats released at CES 2014 before I go purchasing anything.

If you have Nvidia driver 32x - then delete it and install 331 or 314. I had 20 FPS, when play Infestation on 320, and when I update it to 331 it increase to 60.

Looked at 331 seems it supports the same GPU but not the mobile version.

Wow, that's bad. It seems to be like you got a corrupted update. I upgraded my service pack around 2-3 weeks ago. And I had absolutely no FPS difference in COD 4. Best thing to do is go ahead and do a fresh install on Windows. Sorry you have to reinstall all of you Steam games again. My PC got messed up around Thanksguving break and I had to do a fresh install of Win 7. I had every single game installed back then. Now the only game I have installed is COD 4.

Did you check switchable graphic setting? I don't know if your intel GPU is faster of slower than that old nvidia.
How did you get a laptop with 4th intel and that old gpu anyway? Did you mean GF 630m, 730m?

This laptop did not have a soldered CPU. the GPU was the only thing soldered so I brought it to a PC repair shop and bought a newer I7 and they were able to upgrade it.. Unfortunately. the GPU being soldered is not upgradable.

If you have Automatic System Restore enable, try to restore your Windows back to the point before you installed the latest update.
