That's the typical hysterical Internet crowd behavior. Somehow AoS was stigmatized as 'bad game' by the hysterical Internet crowd that believes everything without even thinking about it when there are enough people who cry loud enough.
Before I bought the game more than a year ago I opened a thread on the Steam forum asking about pros and cons. 90% of the people there told me how evil Jagex is and how they completely destroyed the old version and how everything sucked. No one of these people could give any reasons though so I bought it anyway. And guess what? It's all complete bullshit.
The Steam AoS has all the major game modes of the old version (unchanged, it's all 1:1 like in the old, original version), it looks far better and it has a lot of new game modes on top of it. There is zero reason to even look at the old version if you can have the Steam version. So whoever started the thread you linked to is a complete idiot.
I don't know what Jagex did in the past, apparently they upset some idiot gamers back then. But AoS is not a terrible game. It has some flaws, but it is very enjoyable and easily worth the current sale price if you like the idea of a voxel multiplayer shooter.

If you like the game yourself despite other's opinions you may consider getting it before it gets another price raise since it was 2.49$, 75% discount a year ago...

For 80% off its really not so bad.
Plenty of people play, so it has that going for it, its not bad, its kinda just there....fun in quick bursts.

I like this game, it's fun when playing with the right group of players. But beware that you are likely to get raging players that will votekick on you because you can't play better then them.
Like when you play survivor against zombies, you are the only one left alive and pretty well hidden in a huge terrain map (you can dig underground and make tunnels to avoid zombies), some people will call you hacker and votekick you. Some others will just votekick you because you are giving too much trouble. And then there are crappy hosts, like in CS, get butthurt for killing them too much that they kick you.
