Several people, several tastes.
Let everybody do as they please as long as the do not harm anybody.

I don't think the OP is questioning why people should say thank you. his point seems to be that 1) people that are thankful should show more gratitude by saying more than a generic "thank you", and that 2) if one is truly appreciative, a greasemonkey script that just says "thank you" doesn't really show it. At least that's my interpretation.

I'm not agreeing with the OP. I'm just saying that I think people are missing the point of the question. I think people doing the greasemonkey thing is actually nice. They're going an extra step and to ensures that thanks gets said and is not forgotten.

I'm not polite in real life and I'm honest about it.

I thank these people for the chance to win something. That's more than enough to say thank you.

It's not for nothing. They give away a free game and doesn't matter who is gonna win in the end.

Thank you for thanking, but is a simple "thank you" really enough? Wouldn't it be a lot better if you go for 2 "thank you" s?

"Thank you" is a single "thank", "thanks" is multiple "thank".

Worth a try. Contributor might appreciate the originality and give you a present.
I know I would.

It's "polite" and it increases your comment count, that's why people also use scripts for that.
It's just one of the things that everybody does because everybody does it, I doubt that even 1% of the people are honestly thanking the giveawayer to have a very small chance to win a game.

because saying "f*ck you for this chance" would be to much typing

because of increasing comment rate and making yourself look active (some groups want a good comments/entries ratio). Personally i just say thanks if the creator wants it (like "say thanks or i wont give you the game if you win") or when i win (usualy like 3-4 times in steam window and also here).

Why do people say "bless you" when someone sneezes?
99.9999% of the time people say 'bless you' when someone sneezes, people need to be more creative.
Saying 'bless you' doesn't increase chance to get into heaven.
I even know language script that automatically add 'gesundheit' every time someone sneezes, even if your not in germany.

99.9999% of comments are 'thank you', people need to be more creative.
Writing 'thank you' doesn't increase chance to win.
I even know greasemonkey script that automatically add 'thank' comment every time you hit enter to win button.
