I remember playing with MAGLEVS in Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri way back in 1999. 18 years later and we've got...fidget spinners. Man, the future sucks. Yes, I know that Japan, China and S. Korea have maglevs, but that might as well be on another planet considering where I live.

OK, if you really must know, the reason for the train is that I've reached level 8. I stopped actively pursuing levels upon hitting 7, but eleven months later and here we are. Also, 500 games on Steam so yay, I guess.

As far as I know, they only use them for experimental purposes. Considering the regular Shinkansen (bullet trains) can reach 443 km/h (275 mph), commuting needs seem pretty well served. Many people commute daily to their jobs halfway across the country (!).

The maglev can hit a record of 603 km/h (375 mph), but conversely that reduces its viability (kind of like an express elevator... only makes sense for specific long distances, having extended acceleration and braking times). Existing lines are not ideal for this. But last I heard, a dedicated one was already being built.

well, halfway country is bit overstatement, most popular example used in articles and such is Nagoya - Tokyo (also for kind of longest 'popular' route, as japanese companies can provide employees up to100k yen per month for commuting [simplified] - and shinkansen pas cost bit more, so I read [not sure if true] that to keep it up, nagoya city pays the rest lol)

but yeah, moneyz speakz

money I guess (but as said, that is a guess),
in theory, they are cheaper, but it is not
$ efficient enough to change the infrastructure.
Hell, Japan Railways are struggling with having less passengers,
as still it is heavy subsidised it is not collapsed, but who know.
Never seen them IRL yet

Same in China. There is just one line in Shanghai to go to airport, but was done mainly as an experiment (and for the show, obviously).
Maglev is too expensive technology for what you get... high speed trains are much more cost effective and run at almost same average speed with more traditional infrastructure.

Awesome magtrain! Congrats on new lvl.
I suppose that might feel good- better then pursuing a lvl. I mean, at least for me (ansious type) the wait and anxiety pretty much nulls the pleasure of hitting a new lvl.

I think its nicer being a surprise; More like wining a giveaway btw.

Heck, am i the only one who think reaching new level needed its own pop-up window gif- a even bigger one then wining GA?
We deserved fancy html5 glitter or fireworks across the entire screen- with 2 crazy cats at least!!

The saddest part about maglev in China is how Siemens built the first short track and for some mysterious reason the Chinese didn't need their services afterwards. :-p
Now they have the trains we paid to develop, while Germany remains a maglev free zone.

That's how the Romans took over the world. They'd capture a single Carthaginian galley, copy it, improve upon it and build hundreds of them to conquer the Mediterranean and ultimately destroy Carthage.

The difference being that the Romans used shipwrecks, without Carthaginian "support". In this case those smart German CEOs knew exactly what was about to happen and yet couldn't resist. ^^

Sometimes old tech can be as fast and efficient as new tech. The TGV V150 can go 574.8 kilometers per hour (357.2 mph) and it is not even a maglev. It just has wheels and a track.

Choo choo! Wait, do maglevs do "choo choo"?

I don't think so. Which is probably the main reason why they haven't achieved wider adoption. People really like hearing that "choo choo".
