Gold version is absolutely worth picking up but only if you like strategies. Otherwise I wouldn't recommend it. The expansion contributes to diversity in gameplay a lot.

i liked both pre GK and post GK. Im pumped for BNW just for new diplomatic and culture options let alone new civs. If you go to GMg and use a coupon code, you can get civ 5 gold for pretty dirt cheap. Even if you dont end up liking it, 10$ wouldnt be such a big waste. GK really rounded things up though, and IMO ancient wonder DLC is clutch.

I own the game and all expansion, I definitely enjoy it. Then again I haven't played the originals so I couldn't compare.

I prefer Civ4 but lots of my friends actually enjoy Civ5 more than it. Honestly, Civ5 is not that bad but there are soooo many pet peeves I can find in it but the rest is fairly or even overly interesting too.
recommend you buy it now since waiting for a huge bundle might take 1-2 years

Hello everyone,
As the subject says - what's the state of Civ V these days? When it came out, basically everyone threw stones at it due to being overly simplistic with many valuable game mechanics removed, having horrible AI (both in combat and in behind-the-scenes diplomacy insanity), performance issues, etc.
The game probably received a ton of patches in the meantime (plus a full expansion), so I'm wondering if the Gold version is worth picking up now, or if I should wait for another year or two until it's bundled with the upcoming expansion.
