Beware, library of over 2700 games to load

A friend has asked me to put a spare computer he owns through its paces and do my best to break it. It used to have problems with some of the hardware, and while parts were replaced, he didn't keep with it much longer before doing a whole new build. Since he doesn't have the time free to spend a few days playing maxed out games, that is now my job. I need to see if any problems will pop up when the system is getting serious.

I might even pick it up myself if it doesn't die while I'm pushing it. Not sure of the specs, but its better than my current system. Might run CPU-Z later.

The computer failed the first test. It won't connect to my wireless internet. It can see it, but it won't connect. Its trying to claim that it must be on the end of the router. Funny, seems fine to me, as everything else uses it fine. >:(

So yeah, that is a bomb. If I can't even use internet on it, I can't do **** all else with it.

Well, if I get the internet running, I now have specs
HX 1050W PSU
AMD FX9370 CPU, 4.4GHz
Mobo: Crosshair V formula Z
16GB Memory DDR3
R9 280x video card * 2

Care to name it off then? I never needed any myself. I was just going to play stuff like Wolfenstein, Alien Isolation and other games that my PC didn't like.

This is the only program that comes to mind. There should be a few 90% off coupons floating about if you don't have it.

-edit-
Sorry on mobile and I don't double check when it's late.

+1 to this. 3d Mark is a standard for a reason.

I also like Memtest86 just to see if there is anything wrong with the RAM.

I'm an old Leo Laporte guy, and he got me into ZDnet a long time ago for tech write ups, here is a nice write up and some freeware that they recommend for testing all aspects of a new build, it will work just as well on an old one.

Prime95 for cpu and memory
Furmark or Unigine Heaven for vid card
And there is even one that stresses your PSU, sorry cant remember the name
Most vid games cant use more than 3Ghz of the cpu so you need a program that is suited to do so
Edit: http://www.ocbase.com/ for PSU test

Didn't really remember name. But now i know it was Furmark. You can even limit air movement for fan by putting some boxes under it. Makes for quicker results ;>

Outright blocking it might not be best idea though.

Are they still an issue on modern pcs though? I know back in the day even beast machines struggled but I'm not sure that is the case now.

If you really want a game fom your library Metro LL has a built in stress test you open up the steam folder and run it by itself, game must be in stalled.
Crysis is the defacto fallback

There is this program called Microsoft Hyperlapse. It is used for rendering action cam videos and stuff, BUT equal which video you put in there, it will max out the cpu to 100% all the time it renders. And if you additionally run some newer game to it, ... ;)

the wireless connection problem could be a faulty driver or something software related, you dont have to write it off. try a live linux to make sure the hardware is working then start replacing the drivers and then a fresh windows install if all else fail.
and to test stability as others said, use Prime86, Furmark and few loops of 3D mark. they normally load your PC to unrealistic levels, so if it can pass it it can handle most of the normal daily use.

It can use wired internet (he tried it earlier at his place to make sure it powered up and all), its just the wireless, which I'm using unless I get a 10 meter cable. If it couldn't connect to internet at all, I'd believe that a fault, for now I'm blaming how it connects wirelessly (it uses some antenna thing).

i meant to test the wireless network card (hardware) using a different software. fastest way is to get a live USB of any linux distribution you like (linux mint is user friendly and should be packed with drivers). if it works then the PC can connect, you just got some trouble on the software level and it should be easy to fix.
if you dont mind spending some cash a USB Wifi dongle is a cheap and easy to use quick fix. amazon

Not spending money to test this for him. Not mine yet, and it might not be.

If it is bought by me, I'll be taking the 1.5TB hard drive, Blu Ray drive and I guess my WiFi card from my old PC anyway. My current system has it beaten there. :P
