Mine is chat. After all these years they can't give us chat history?
Even on mobile app, which gives us the only thing close to a history for chat, it doesn't always give me notifications and I miss chat messages all the time. I only find them when I go to open a chat to write someone. Drives me crazy!

What's your biggest steam pet peeve?
(And do you have any tips for better steam chat features?)

And take this stinkin' gib too lv.1, no other restrictions

Oh okay, one thing, uhm, proper sorting, my library is a big mess, some Windows '95 functionality in 2017 would be nice :P

having to pass an age-gate for some games -- I guess it's a privacy thing that it doesn't remember your birthday, but to me it's a dumb annoyance -- it's like "I'm logged in, you know who I am, stop fucking asking me this!"

Totally that. I hate that age gate.

In a way, I can understand that they wouldn't want you to get in trouble with your work place and the like, but it would be nice if it could remember you per device/location, and skip it if you did so once previously on that device/location.

Other people already mentioned a good share of annoying things, but there's one tiny inconsequential thing that I find annoying: why isn't spoiler tag in screenshots permanent? I don't even know how this could be a glitch and not by design, but why would they implement that?

It's a glitch and not by design. It's just one of those many issues that Valve don't think are worth fixing.

could we link this amazing post to steam forum so they would notice and delete/lock it there?

a better client overall with:

  • better options to manage my libary (!!!!), my screenshots, my friends and groups
  • Chathistroy
  • bigger emotes in chat

Also for store:

  • a clear line between tags by cusomers and categories that are given by the publisher/dev (would also help to manage the libary)
  • more review options than "yes" or "no"

you go through all the trouble (maybe) to craft a badge and all you get is a puny emoticon you can't even see in chat. yep.

Having to approve every single market listing is the worst thing steam has ever done in my opinion.
At least let me sell all copies of an item all at once. I have no interest in accepting 500 listings on my phone. So I'm forced to trade...and I don't like the rates xD

Talking about Summer Sale Cards in particular.

The review system boiling down to a "I really love this game!!!" and a "I hate this game with a passion", since there is absolutely zero middle ground. This is why it is so easy to fake higher scores and ratings nowhere near the ratings of the same game on sites like Metacritic or even GOG, where they use a standard scoring system and average that out.

^This^

In addition, one word spam reviews are still a thing and every so often there is a "justice reviewer" who will give a game a negative rating for the sole reason that they feel the "current rating is too high" (though this is a problem off of Steam too :s) You're here to review the game, not review other people's tastes.

My biggest steam pet peeve ?

The storefront. ALL OF IT.
From the fact that they keep pushing on garbage, to the fact that said garbage can't be filtered out easily, to the fact that filtering actually doesn't filter out things I tell it to exclude, to the recommendation algorithms coming up with garbage, to there being no adequate manual search, to the page layout being a mess.

I 100% agree with the chat. Half the time it doesn't pop up who messaged me so they think I'm rude and ignoring them. Also the absense of chat history is just silly. There is no reason there can't be chat history, especially when dealing with video games and scammers.

Totally the chat! sometimes I'm busy when I receive a message, and later it's just gone. My luck if I remember I had one and can awkwardly ask for a repeat. If I don't remember they'll just think I'm ignoring them xD

I just want actual support members that read your messages and reply instead of sending random canned responses that may or may not have anything to do with what you told them :/

1) not being able to rename titles in the library. Some companies have inconsistent naming conventions for games in the same series (Total War), inconsistent use of trademark and copyright in the title (Batman Arkham), multiple names (Resident Evil) or other ridiculous stuff.
2) sorting the library
3) that one game that Steam Library insists on also sticking into a second category "VR" and I can't get rid of without hiding the regular version of the game

So, yeah, basically, the library

Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard, a checkered gameboard with 64 squares arranged in an 8×8 grid. The game is played by millions of people worldwide.

  1. Chat in general
    • History, admins/mods abilities and accessibility, lack of mobile accessibility on group chats, and a shitload of other stuff I can't think of at the moment.
  2. Downloader, download scheduling and updating
    • Recently, downloads are resuming on waking my PC from sleep. They also start when you start Steam or your computer. It does not make sense. If I paused my downloads before, I surely do not want to resume them until I'm ready.
  3. Community
    • Ohhh boy where do I start? Steam groups management? Discussions? Reviews? It's flawed, brutally half-assed, and extremely disappointing.
  4. Lack of tabs
    • Can't really see how that couldn't be a feature - you can open multiple tabs on browser, and multiple windows on client. Why the fuck can't they implement tabs on client?
  5. Everything, really.
    • Steam client is a very disappointing thing. After so many years, you'd think they'd finally launch another big update to fix and improve many of the features that are broken or missing from the client. Oh wait, no, let's do minor changes nobody notices, or updates that just pisses off the community for no reason (looking at you, new gifting restrictions).

I really hope they do some major overhaul with new client update this years.

I guess it's due to flat structure, no one wants to work on improvements, rather on new features, so everything is left half-assed until it breaks totally.

Gifting change is unrelated to Steam Development and maybe not entirely up to Valve to decide...

Yeah, a bad example off the top of my head. What I was trying to imply is that Valve tends to prioritize the wrong things.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, it prioritises the right things.

  1. New CS:GO skins.
  2. Trying to find out what new kind of CS:GO skins could be introduced after the gloves. (Potential candidates are boots, backpacks, or just porting the TF2 hat system.)
  3. New TF2 hats.
  4. New Dota 2 weapons.
  5. Hiring more lawyers to prevent financial data leaking to the public, even if it means breaking laws.
  6. Rolling in some cash.
  7. Designing the next CS:GO operation.
  8. Sending out reminder emails to all publishers to not forget to add cards to all remaining games on Steam.
  9. Ensure that the Steam Direct fee can be paid even at Western Union, in Apple Store coupons, through offshore bank accounts, and in any other way as long as the money arrives—after all, just because the new indie cannot pay through the regular bank system, it doesn't mean that their potential new hit, "Simulator Simulator" is just another item in the Russian mafia's money laundering operations.
  10. Make a public statement of how many hundreds of new support people we hired in the past months. (Note: This time run the number name generator before making the statement.)
  11. Make a new layout to a randomly selected part of the client.
  12. Run a database query on the current issue people have with Steam and release a public statement of working on it, then simply turn it off in 1-4 steps.

I'm not complaining (much), I like steam, but I don't like the however-long-hold for trading away cards. I think some of the Steam summer sale cards I put up for pending sale are finally just becoming active for a sale soon. I hope I priced them right a couple weeks ago, because there's no time to change them (which resets the wait time unless I'm mistaken).

I like the fact there is no chat history.
What triggers me personally is that I can't remove the default VR category in the library. I have my own category where I put VR games and I don't need another one.
Another thing I dislike is that there are barely any sorting options for your wishlist, there is only price, date added, position. Wish it could sort it by tags at least.
There is no option for hiding your login name and funds on the top. For people that stream this is essential. If you stream your desktop you don't want people to see your name and funds.
Can't remove the big picture icon. I accidentlly press it sometimes and it bothers me.
Can't think of anything else right now.

i have a bit of a special one, i think (didn't read too much about it so far).

whenever i want to connect my xbox elite controller (wireless), it turns itself off after a few seconds. in the beginning i thought that was an issue with the driver or the controller itself. turns out, this only happens when steam is running. i didn't find a solution yet. so for quite some time now, i always have to close steam, turn on the controller and restart steam. it only takes a few seconds to do that, but that also means - and this leads me back to the biggest complaint here ^^ - i lose all current chats. i got used to it, sure. it's still pretty annoying.

i am not sure, but i suspect it has something to do with the fact that i also have a steam controller.

I hate people who have a high level profile.. add me, then proceed to beg me for things.. like.. no. I'm not giving you things.. It gets worse with the more CS:go keys I compile.. at one point I had like 75 combined CS:go/TF 2 keys and I'd get like 18 adds a day from people just begging me for free stuff..

close second would be the inability to exclude already owned games from searches.. I own so many games and the search is kinda crap as is.. so I wind up looking through 50 pages of games I own during steam sales..
