My IRL cake day is coming up soon, so I decided to do GAs that end on that day. Levels are 2-5.
I'm tired of quizes, ciphers and all that crap so I decided to steal idea of some old puzzle.
There was the guy named Epstein or something like that. He invented time, space, quantum physics and the zebra puzzle. Only top 98% could solve it.

Anyway. There are 5 guys who live next to each other on the same street. They all have first name, middle name, last name, distinctive feature, pet and favorite hobby.

  1. The guy with a middle name Hunter is next to the guy with a first name David.
  2. The owner of the tiny octopus is exactly to the right of the tall stature guy.
  3. The guy obsessed with the Large Hadron Collider has a last name Vale.
  4. The guy doing oversized clothing on a spare time has a middle name Warren.
  5. The guy with a last name Smith is next to the owner of the massive rhino.
  6. Warren (still middle name) is exactly to the right of the guy with a long nose.
  7. The tall guy is somewhere between the guy who collects miniatures and Hunter, in that order.
  8. The guy with a middle name Quinton is next to the guy with a last name Petrenko.
  9. Vaugh (middle name) is at one of the ends.
  10. The guy with a first name Harvey assembles miniatures.
  11. The guy with a last name Naiman is exactly to left of the guy interested in microbiology.
  12. The guy with a patronim Dmitrievich (we will use it as a middle name) is exactly to the left of Hunter (middle name too).
  13. The owner of the small mouse is next to the guy who learn macroeconomics for fun.
  14. The LHC guy is next to the guy with a last name Smith.
  15. The owner of the great dane is exactly to the left of the fan of the Large Hadron Collider.
  16. Alex (first name) is next to the dog owner from the previous sentence.
  17. Hunter is the weirdo who loves macroeconomics news.
  18. The guy with a humongous ego is exactly to the left of Vale (last name).
  19. The guy with big belly is somewhere to the right of Alex (first name).
  20. In the second house is the guy with a first name Ivan.
  21. Smith is exactly to the right of the macroeconomics fan.
  22. The guy with short hairs is somewhere to the left from the guy with a last name Miller.
  23. Someone owns the big horse, don't remember who.
In which house does Edward live?

Rules? You can and probably should give each other any hints/clues/ways for a solution other than direct answers.
You can ask me any question and I'll happily ignore them. If there is any mistake - well, I don't speak English and regret nothing.

Solution:
Build the spreadsheet. There are 5 columns in total. How many symbols does the GA code consist of? There are 3 rows of names and 3 rows of big/small adjectives. Where on SG big/small adjectives are used? Use 1st letters from names and big/small adjectives as upper/smaller case and you'll have the code for the GAs. 3 in total. In their descriptions you'll get symbols for the 4th GA. In 4th you'll get the answer for the "house" question. The house was just the red herring to hide the codes in plain sight - in the spreadsheet itself.

Bump! Was fun doing the Zebra Puzzle but holy cow am I stumped on the answer. None of the hints are really doing anything for me and I've just stared at the puzzle for an hour now hoping something clicks lol

Well... puzzle solved on paper after like 20 minutes. Then almost 3 hours creating something how to answer... I am giving up now... I am not good at english but at least I tried. Good luck everyone.

same here, no idea how to connect these elements, even though I see the pattern.

I am not intelligent enough for this. The zebra puzzle was easy enough to logic through, but I have no clue how I am supposed to get a one-word answer out of organizing everything in a table.

I wonder, reading the comments... Am i the only one that tried to input 'answer' as the answer?
It feels like the whole puzzle is just to mess with people without a real answer.
Feels kinda mean and dumb to do a whole puzzle that can be solved but the answer works for nothing because you dont even know what to actually input.

What to input is just part of the puzzle, which has eluded me also, but according to this comment doing the zebra puzzle is a neccessary step.

Well, I did it. Solved the zebra puzzle in itself... Now I dont know what the heck im supposed to do next :/

I'm also puzzled as to what to do next plus I only wanted to enter for Ball x Pit, so I might throw in the towel.

edit - okay I didn't throw in the towel, I was trying to overcomplicate it, my best hint is to just try stuff out 🤷‍♂️
but indeed, the zebra puzzle is a necessary step.

The hints people are leaving just serve to make my head spin.
I think I'll learn from the solution when the GAs are over if anyone is willing to share.

This thread reaffirms my theory that giving really good hints is far, far harder than making really good puzzles.

That does seem like one of the best, and the guy is named Cluelesson so he must know what he's talking about, but I am currently still stuck.

At least they didn't suggest I create a spreadsheet.

Took an hour working it all out in Excel and now can't input it, or I'm missing how to interpret a riddle within the answer....

So clever puzzle bump! Agreed that lots of the ideas in the thread helped me hugely getting the puzzle done, then puzzling the puzzle (even the people who are still working on it to figure it out.)

(even the people who are still working on it to figure it out.)

Some of us are still working on it. I'm currently seeing how a paraceratherium, using entanglement theory, cab fit inside an igloo made by voles.

I'm certainly at this point I'm in the bottom 2% :)

Also, happy cakeday!

All done! Completed the puzzle, could clearly see the pattern but couldn't quite see how to move forward (I actually quickly dismissed the correct course of action 🙃 probably too tired) then after a 24 hour break I came to my senses!

That was fun, thanks 😊

Are there any hints for someone who has also recognized a pattern but is unsure how to format it into an answer?

I'm in same spot as you, solved the zebra, noticed stuff and got stuck since day 1 like that. All the clues given are either something I already knew or something that I have no idea how to connect. At this point I don't even care about the giveaways, I just want to solve the dam thing.

I guess I would repeat what has been said before: everything is important... When you see a clear pattern, it's easy to get distracted and stop looking at anything else, but noticing the pattern only gets you part of the way there, it's not the finish line.

Yep. Even if the forest is familiar, it's easy to get lost if you're looking too hard at the trees.

If your English is good enough to make the spreadsheet then it's good enough to solve the puzzle

I solved the zebra puzzle, found what I think is a pattern, but can't figure out the format of the answer.

I tried every word/verb I can think of that follows the pattern and would answer "In which house does Edward live", but nothing worked. Is there outside knowledge required about Edward, his name, stuff in his house, or is everything contained in the puzzle?

Bump I guess

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I haven't figured out the answer either, but the other clues seem to suggest that the Edward question is a red herring, and that the answer is very long and "everything" from the puzzle matters. I've tried typing all the answers in order though, and that doesn't seem to be it.

300 bruteforce attempts later and nothing, not sure if the op is lying about the answer being one word (a word with letters that you can find in a dictionary), so i guess it's a cipher

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You can lead a zebra to water... but the zebra might not necessarily lead you to the answer, it might lead you somewhere else.

PS, you really shouldn't try to bruteforce that answer.
