Tried the Diablo 3 demo, enjoyed it, said "**** it" to the price, couldn't find a torrent with anything past the base release, missed the recent PSN sale (face it, $25 on PS3 is cheaper than it will ever be on the Battle.net store). Too lazy to hook up my PS2 for the classic Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II.

Titles you can avoid listing

FATE - The series fails to really keep me interested for long.
Path of Exile - I'm really not a fan of this, so we can avoid that being included on any lists.
RAW - Realms of Ancient War - No.
Space Hack - But really, who would recommend this?
Titan Quest - Tried when I got the base game bundled long ago, not interested in returning.
Torchlight - Enjoyed and beaten the first, but something about the second keeps me from playing it for more than a few hours per save.

I don't know what you can get it for in the Greens, but Diablo III Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition (contains both the base Diablo III and expansion set) was $19.99 a couple days ago for the PS3. Hey Delta. Came here to recommend trying out Van Helsing as well. It's full of bugs but I found it enjoyable even I don't like the genre. Haven't tried the second one yet but the first one was ok at least. Definitely better than Torchlight or Titan Quest. It's very much like Torchlight but with much better setting, graphics, storytelling and overall atmosphere. There is also a mini-game in which they combined the basic gameplay with tower defense elements. Players like it so much they made a standalone title for that called Deathtrap. So you might wanna look into that as well a try something little bit different. And besides that, there are Borderlands titles which is basically the very same thing but played as FPS. But I'm sure you know that.

You really don't need to spend anything on Marvel Heroes. You get to try 11 different starter characters, up to level 10, and then choose one to fully level to level 60. You can prestige characters at level 60 to gain additional costumes, which can be rerolled to create new costumes, that you would otherwise have to buy from the in game store. The devs are constantly ensuring that all characters play well and are competitive, through the 52 review process. Most importantly, it has the Diablo 2 feel -- David Brevik is one of the lead designers, after all. Try it for a while, you just might like it. Check the forums first to see which characters have been reviewed, though. Those ones will be more fun. As an example, Captain America and Punisher have just been reviewed, and are now very fun to play. Hulk and Juggernaut stomp everything, as is to be expected. Deadpool will not be reviewed until around the end of summer, so maybe don't let him be your first choice. Cheers! :D

There is also Shadows: Heretic Kingdoms, very interesting game, im currently playing it, and i dont dislike it that much, sadly it lags a little in my machine D:

What in the name of all the hell? PC version was developed first, then Blizzard made console port from scratch (as they say). D3 on PC is in no way a "console port". So low quality of the game does not depend on platform but it does on feature implementation.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really, think about it, they reduced greatly the number of slot for skills (making the game really streamlined), the way the skill systems works unlocking with lvl up (the most crappy things they could do ever).
You say they worked from scratch, but that is also a lie, they just reused most of the code and then added a couple of things, they said they worked from scratch because they needed to look like the idea was recient and not expected from them, from start their aim was the console peasants, they wanted the cash not the fans D:

Also, the quality of a game really change from console to platform, because there are features and things that in a PC are much better implemented than in consoles (lets take Diablo 2 as example, the number of skills slots, normally we have 1-9 skills slots, with left+right mouse buttons, tab for exchange the right mouse skill and others hotkeys that give us a great edge in this type of games, but in diablo 3 you only have 6 skills slots in total, including the right+left mouse buttons and you cant change the skills quick, so... dumbed down?) also, sadly the "quality" of recent games leave much to be said D:

Permalink

They dumbed it down for MMO players, who seems to be the only people who enjoyed the game. Ironically the console version fixed so many issues that the PC version had that they started to incorporate those features into the PC game.

I'll try a different perspective. Some older games or ones on other consoles (maybe pick-em up used for cheap).

Some Classics from the genesis Collection, that are still quite good:

X360:

  • Too Human - Interesting story on Norse mythology. Very God of War type action (combos), complete with your regular Diablo-esque looting and dungeons/spawns. You'll super love it, or hate it.
  • Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1 & 2 - Classics. If you like comics at all, it's great to tear through all the characters skill trees

Gamecube:

  • Phantasy Star Online - Decent game, even if you can't go online. I mention Gamecube, because it consolidates the 2-3 versions into one. It also allows for local split-screen co-op.

PS2:

  • Champions of Norath, and CoN Return to Arms - You mentioned Baldur's Gate (awesome taste btw), so CoN should be right up your alley. Very similar in overall style, and obviously of the same universe.
  • X-Men Legends 1 and 2 - Pretty much the precursor to the Ultimate Alliance series.
  • Dark Cloud 1 & Dark Cloud 2 - BRILLIANT games. Top Notch. Dark Cloud 2 is the better experience, and it is awesome to try and evolve weapons, collect items and search the randomly generated dungeons. Really rewarding, if you have the patience for it. Also, Dark Cloud 2 still has pretty great production values, even by today's standards.
  • Rogue Galaxy - From the makers of Dark Cloud series. It was created afterwards, but was not quite as good. However, it has a more mature theme that can be very appealing. Please note, that being "Not as good as Dark Cloud" still means that it's pretty great.

There are many more I'm likely forgetting.

Oh dear God! I wouldn't recommend Too Human to my worst enemy. The single worst gaming experience of my entire life. The original massive development time, mega hype, mega flop.

My girlfriend at the time was going away with her parents, I took her to the airport and this came out that day. I picked it up on the way home and I forced myself to finish it.

I genuinely think it is my least favourite game of all time.

I fucking loved X-Men Legends though and Ultimate Alliance. Wish they'd kept on making those games :( especially the x-men ones.

Out of curiosity why don't you like Titan Quest? It's basically Diablo 2 set in Greece/Egypt/etc. Had tons of fun with it over the years(don't judge by my hours on steam i'v had a retail copy since it came out.

As for suggestions try Dungeon Siege/Dungeon Siege 2(tho it's retarded that you can't get the expansion for it on steam, i have retail copies of em). Grim Dawn, it's made by devs of Titan Quest, tho i'm personally waiting for it to come out of early access before buying it. Sacred 1/2 tho imho the second one was crap. Fate, idk which is the latest expansion for it, if you don't mind the graphics it's a ton of fun.

Titan Quest

Super buggy and a lot of extremely non-viable builds for a solo game. Still one of the better titles in the genre, should get a proper remake with some decent production value and a little more feel to the setting, it's rather lackluster in terms of story.

Super buggy? How so? I'v played hundreds of hours and never ran into any serious problem. Sure there's non-viable builds but the same can be said for many of the games in this genre, even "legends" like Diablo 2. The lackluster story is also a common "feature". We don't play them for story, we play them for progressively harder gameplay and grinding our brains out.

That still doesn't make it a feature, you simply ignore it.

Yes but you can't fault one game for a fault or multiple faults of the genre itself. I don't really play multiplayer, i enjoy playing it alone, i only played it with some mates a couple of times and we had no issue so i can't rly judge how stable it is.

A game is at fault for its content. There is no reason not to have any kind of story and even other games in the genre have a better backstory and setting than Titan Quest which doesn't even use the rich history of its historical setting.

Titan Quest 2 has more solo play builds than D2 does. Literally anything with Dream can solo the end game. Only 3 classes in D2 could solo Hell Baal runs.

There are builds in TQ that can't even solo the game on less than insane difficulties because they're simply crap, and there are lots of them. "Anything with Dream" is proof enough.

Every single class(and class combo) can solo the game. It isn't the builds that suck, it is just you who sucks at the game, and/or making efficient builds. If you even look at the forums there are 5-10 different builds per class that are able to solo the end game on the hardest difficulty.

Again, there are only 3 builds from 3 classes that can solo the endgame of D2, and this is dependent on which enemies spawn.

I'm surprised to see it at 20€ base + 20€ expansion on amazon.de whereas "English versions" seems to be quite more expensive. Usually blockbuster games don't become half priced permanently before they are like 10 years old^^

Just thought I'd mention it anyway, maybe you got someone who could buy it for you from there and give you the codes (client language can be chosen whichever you want). D3 should be cross-server-play as far as I know... then again I'm not too sure if there aren't some special "deals" for the SEA region...

As for other games; I don't think there are other quite as fast-paced diablo-style games and hardly any of really good quality in the first place. A warning though too: I don't think the console version is useful at all if item hoarding is your thing. Sure it's fine for some hack'n'slashing especially with friends, but it's just not quite the same game as on a PC.

If not DIII, then I'd aim for "Lost Ark" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LL5zGvsmSM0
Not yet released though. edit) another 19min video showcasing classes:

You're missing out if you haven't tried the expansion. The game improved immensely.

Still unlock with levels... sadly...
But now they have pets, and many challenges lvls, and lots of things to try to hide the facts that they screw up the skills systems D:

I think for them to remove the level-based skill system would require a lot of base code rebuilding, which would be a lot more work than it's really worth in the end.

I guess the best way to express your displeasure with the practice would be what you're doing - abstaining from purchasing any more content related to the game.

I'm just sorry that you can't look past something that minor to the stuff they added for end-game players. =/

Skill system is very important for RPG games...
Same as loot, and quests.

I agree, but it's not like it doesn't have one at all. Just because you don't like the way they implemented it doesn't make it a major issue with anyone but yourself.

I'm not saying it to belittle your opinion, but it's just that - your opinion. The system is there, even if slightly flawed.

I understand You have Your opinion and that You are satisfied with Diablo III.
For me this game is a step back rather than step forward.
I didn't expect them to dumbgrade that kind of game.
Skill tree was everything in Diablo II.

The 2 Van Helsing games get a very good rep:)

I personally found the first Van Helsing game to be needlessly complicated, as well as seemingly dragging on forever. Yes, the idea of it is good, but the execution could have been more smooth.

Because of my experience with the first, I never picked up the second one.
