I like to play games. Because I like playing games.

In my oppinion the achievements ant the progression in the game gives us some kind of satisfaction. Personally I like games because I rather just like them, and have fun playing with friends, or I go "deep" into the game and follow the story attentively, how the game progresses etc.

Why do you ask why twice?
I've been playing games for more than twenty years now. They have been a companion to me even when my family lived in the middle of nowhere. They let me experience so much, without going anywhere, many of them things I could not do otherwise.
Also, addiction.

I'm sure the answer for most of us is that they are entertaining. But maybe you're asking why we find them entertaining. They offer goals to achieve and challenges to overcome, and for that reason they are more entertaining to me than TV and movies. I think that's because they keep my mind active and help me escape reality. I'm not imagining myself rescuing princesses or anything, but if my mind is occupied with a videogame I don't think about all the troubles I have in life. TV and movies don't offer me that same escape.

i like games because you can do things that are impossible or too fucking dangerous/illegal in the real life. like being a fucking overpowered jedi, jump 30 metters and keep looking cool, do crazy stuff without getting killed, being the god damn batman. and if you fail, you can respawn, you can't respawn on real life (yet).
you probably can be batman on real life, but you need a TON of money (probably more than a ton, maybe 5-6 tons of money).
as same as books, videogames let you live stories, they let you be the protagonist, or the mad god that controls the world. Even better than books, some games let you decide what is going to happen, some games let you take deciscions if you want to be the good guy or the bad guy or the sociopathic guy that goes inside a city and murder everyone (like in TES or fallout), and then you can just reset the world, and nothing happens.
also they are fun, and attack directly the reward system of the brain. when you find a good loot/complete a quest/objective or kill the super bad guy, your brain starts lighting up like an hysteric Christmas tree.
also, addiction.

5-6 tons of money? Tons is a weight measurement, not a monetary measurement

Trolls be trollin' (or maybe he's just ignorant). But in any case he's wrong. I just checked it out - 1 US bill weighs 1 gram. So assuming we're talking about US dollars, and assuming that we're talking about one-hundred-dollar bills, a ton of bills would be $90,781,500. So then 5-6 tons would be $453,907,500 - $544,689,000.

That's interesting. In the imperial measurement system (unfortunately still being the dominant system in the USA), a ton is 2000 lb.

Yup - by about 100kg.
But I thought number denominations (like million, billion, etc) were universal. I'd call the number you've typed there 'one trillion'.

Escapism and entertainment.
Why this form of entertainment over others? Well, right now I find myself more engaged by games.
You, the player are in control of the action to some degree. Yes, some games are more "on rails" than others amd not evey game is an open sandbox kind of deal (and even those have limitations). Anyway, as a player who is control of the character, I guess I sometimes find it easier to put myself in the position of the character than maybe I would whilst watching a film or tv show.
I'm not saying I don't like film or tv as well, but games are different in that they are not passive. The success or faliure of my character is down to me and my actions, and I like being able to do that. It's a nice change up from just watching something, you're taking part instead.

I play games because I've got nothing better to do with my life.
Also, if I went outside, I'd probably be murdered very quickly.

I do not know. It used to be fun, engrossing and interesting. Now I rarely feel like playing anything at all. But I guess games are like movies in that they let you escape reality and imagine life is a lot more interesting than it really is.

I like games because I like them. Why, you ask? Because I like them.
