OHHHHHHHH - well that would have been good info to include in the original post
your isp sucks - or your friend's does - something sucks - make freebie gmail or something like yahoo and have him send to that. I've had problems (no idea why it would matter other than someone's isp must suck) that an email just will not show up. I registered on x-plane.org and never received the activation email after requesting 40 eleven re-sends, checking my inbox from both outlook express (yes I know it sucks but it works for what I need it to do) and from the browser/website - was only able to get it by re-registering with a different email, which funnily enough is simply an alternate sub-account for the same isp

the "problem" is lost in translation.
he did not receive an email with the game. the sender told him he sent it. the op wants to know how long he has to wait to receive the gift via email, or rather, how long it should take.
the likely situation is that the sender did not send the gift, or the wrong email was used. that or he used the wrong email for his steam account.

This! Just add the gifter on Steam so he can send you the game directly (or type the key out in chat for you). The email message could have simply been lost or misaddressed.
