I've never played a hidden object game. Don't know if they are my type of game, but I thought I would give it a chance, by playing one of them.

So, if you're a fan of the genre, and could recommend one game, which one would that be? What is the single game that would convince me that it's a genre that hold many great games? ;)

If you do reply, check the comments first, if someone else has recommended the same game you would, give it a +1, and I'll give the most popular one a try somewhere in the near future.

Probably the whole serious thriller tone? Most HOGs are fairy tale or modern fantasy, this one took its plot much more seriously. But it is also the only HOG I can name from the top of my head which actually has a very real explanation on why you need to rummage through a lot of places.

that last part is indeed true.
as for the missing part, maybe. i don't really like thrillers, and this one is a horror thriller as well...

+1, but this is the only HOG I have played yet. I enjoyed it, but it felt very cheap and cheesy compared to the point and click games that I am use to. I only have one game to base my opinion on, but HOGs seem like they are made for casual gamers to play on touch screen mobile devices where P&Cs feel like more of a traditional computer game with more in depth stories and actual game development.

HOGs are casual games, yes, always were meant to be that. Originally they were just that: item searches. They started to turn into lightweight adventure games after three years, in mid-late 2009, but they never ventured beyond the 2-4 hour casual game levels, because they realised that this is what makes them so successful among the targeted audience. (Same reason you can see now match-3 games also incorporating some kind of a lightweight fantasy story around levels.)

+1 for this.

The detective games have the most intriguing storylines (but really, don't expect too much.. target audience isn't the intellectual elite ;-)), and the Grim Legends series is probably the best gameplay wise.

All new Artifex Mundi games are solid quality though, but beware, there's also games developed by other studios and only published by Artifex Mundi. Those are generally speaking lower quality..

I was hoping that this thread would be a game name in each reply, and then a different amount of +1s after each game comment, and that I could simply pick the one with the most +1s to make things easy :D Seems like I have to make a "real" decision here, but I'm sure it will turn out good, and I'll get to experience what a hidden object game actually is.

haha things never turn out the way you want them to :-) It's also hard to name ONE game since well, they're overall very similar, and which one's better just kind of depends on your taste.. some have a "better" story, some have lots of hidden object scenes, while some hardly have etc. etc.

I can't do it. I can't imagine any HOG that's worth your time ;-) but hey you've got some amazing games in your library as yet unplayed!

Mark of the Ninja is one of my favourite indie games. Definitely worth your time!

Nuclear Throne, just got into it recently. It's amazing! Give it a go :-)

Bastion and Transistor, you've played a little, but I can't recommend them enough.

I have several unplayed games in my library that I either played on console or non steam versions of, that I want to replay some day. However, both Mark of the Ninja and Nuclear Throne are on my to-play-soon list since I haven't played them before!

I finished my first playthrough of Transistor, I'm saving my second playthrough (and 100% achievement run) for later, looking forward to returning to it a second time after I have forgotten the story a bit and will have more fun experiencing it again.

...when I say I want to try a hidden object game, that doesn't mean I plan to abandon all other games I want to play. Just want to know what all the fuss is about since I never played one, and looking for a recommendation.

One game that caused a bit of a debate on a forum I used to frequent was "Drawn: The Painted tower". On it people finally agreed that it was a HOG with strong adventure game elements rather than an adventure game with HOG elements. It's a good game though (if a bit short and easy)

They did? I never considered it a HOG but a really well-done casual adventure with a great tone and visual design.

Actually you should play the first one first, mostly becuase some parts of the second game spoil the first one.

Yup, they're separate stories, you won't be missing anything if you play just the second game (although you can play it later as well, if you end up enjoying the HOG genre hehe!) :)

I have enjoyed the first two games in the Enigmatis trilogy.

The first is called Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek and the second is called Enigmatis 2: Mists of Ravenwood. Both are really fun!

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

+1. As most people said, most Artifex Mundi are quite good. And even if you hate the games themselves, you will probably agree that their art is very, very good.

The funny thing is that I kind of dislike the Hidden Object scenes in these games -- they really interrupt the story in ridiculous ways (you spend minutes finding random objects, but only one of them really matters for the story continuity). I mean, a few HO scenes are fine and can be fun, but too many and I start to feel annoyed instead.

So, out of the 10 or so I played, I would recommend (with my personal scores, just for you!): :D

  1. Abyss: The Wraiths of Eden (85/100)
  2. Enigmatis 2 (85/100)
  3. Nightmares from the Deep 2 (84/100)
  4. Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek (83/100)
  5. Grim Legends: The Forsaken Bride (83/100)
  6. Clockwork Tales (81/100)

(One thing that makes a huge difference to me is some sense of "geographic consistency" of the place... Little details, like being able to see some building on the first scene, and being able to enter the same building 2 hours later... does it make sense?)

The other two "Nightmares from the Deep", and the second "Grim Legends", I dunno, they kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

And stay away from Time Mysteries: Inheritance, unless you are an Artifex Mundi completionist. I guess they were still too green when they made that one. :)

Time Mysteries 1 was their first HOG, based on its original release date and what I managed to gather.
By the way, when it was released, it was a nice enough little game. The original release had a hint system I still wished they kept in the re-release, as it was the best-balanced hint system I have ever seen in a HOG.

And at least it still was a sci-fi time travel story. I don't know why, but in later years, they seemed to develop a really strong aversion to sci-fi and changed everything to fantasy. (Probably this is why they didn't dare to re-release Secret Order 1 on Steam.)

I remember the Mystery Case Files series to be pretty good, it has good plots and the puzzles are not bad. They are not on Steam but you can find them on Big Fish Games. House Of 1000 Doors is not bad too, though I have only played the first one.

They have a good plot since Eipix makes them, which means only the ones form the past two years. MCF games originally didn't really have any kind of plot, just more of a narration; the first one which actually had some kind of a coherent story was the sixth game or so.

  • Brink of Consciousness: Dorian Gray Syndrome if you also like a vaguely crime/thriller atmosphere (and some fab artwork)
  • Enigmatis: The Ghosts of Maple Creek if you want to start with spooky goings on in the US
  • Melissa K. and the Heart of Gold Collector's Edition if you like exploring ancient sites/foreign environment (think a very casual, laidback Lara Croft?)
  • Namariel Legends: Iron Lord Premium Edition if you like steampunk.
Nearwood - Collectors Edition~~ if you prefer fantasy settings.
  • Artifex Mundi generally do good stuff, especially their newer works but don't judge by the Steam release date as they are still releasing older games onto Steam that quite frankly aren't very good (see Time Mysteries/Crime Secrets etc.)
  • In my wishlist + looking good: Adam Wolfe, Mystery of Neuschwanstein
  • Or if you want to go back to some of the 'classics' try Mystery Case Files: Ravenhearst et al.

How would you rate the Grim Legends games, best to worst? Do you need to play them in order, and do the first parts have unsatisfying ending so you feel the need to play all three, or are they more standalone experiences?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't own the 3rd do I don't really know about it. Grim Legends (1) and Grim Legends 2 are standalone (there is nothing related to the first game). I consider them equally great so it's hard for me to say which is best

No relation between them. It is common with HOGs, albeit Artifex Mundi has a few series which are actually connected.

The best Grim Legends is the third by far, followed by the first.
