Wrong. I know plenty of people that play games on their laptops. My friend, for one. He has an Alienware one.

How is this intel's fault exactly? Shouldn't you be blaming yourself or Steam for not getting the game sooner?
The HD 4000 isn't a bad integrated GPU, the 3000 wasn't bad either. The bad ones are the HD 2000 and earlier.

+1 rep OP
I have to agree. You're the consumer and must do some homework before making a purchase such as this. Simply logging on or listening to a sales representative and making an impulse buy will place you in this very condition. I switched to Intel 2 years ago from 19 years of AMD and I only wish I had done it sooner. The K series chip allow for really nice over-clocking! Anyhow, HD4000 as stated already isn't a bad iGPU. However, it's 2+years old now and relying on a CPU based GPU is not the way to go if you're a serious gamer to begin with, especially when you're talking about a laptop, which I dislike stating; but you bought a lemon. Listen to the person below on how to resale it and get the most money possible. Good luck, regardless /endrant

Thats what I was going to say :> At least you're not Googling "INSERT GAME 4500M HD" to check performance (and be heartbroken daily.. Just bought Payday 1 and can't play it at postage-stamp size :> Witcher 1, Borderlands 1.. Best I can do is Civ 5/Sims 3/Torchlight 2 (though laggy).. Also I'm still rocking a Core 2 Duo (2.20ghz), and I'm bumping into tons of games that call for a minimum of 2.40ghz now :P I've been.. trying not to.. rip my hair out.. Its not working :> Next games I'm going to get (and be heartbroken by) are Fallout 3 GOTY and 7 Days to Die..

That machine seems to be a bit overpriced for the specs unless I am missing something, I wouldn't really buy a laptop expecting to get good game performance unless it is a specialized high performance laptop, nevertheless if you are going to it is better to get one with the newer nvidia or amd intergrated chips.

intel HD graphics suck, is better having an APU if you plan to fully use graphical power, but still most of the laptops have intel HD graphics without any GPU, worst are the Mac laptops for more than 1000€ come without GPU xd.

If you can give back this laptop is better doing it, HP is not a good brand as well as Acer, for that money coming without GPU is overpriced I think. You can get better an Asus laptop if possible to replace.

I'm not sure you understand what the terms APU and GPU mean...

Graphics processing Unit GPU, you need this thing to play games and for better performance in computer, APU is an Accelerated Processing Unit is basically a CPU + GPU in one, Intel has integrated graphics but they're much worse than an APU can have, also APUs are only from AMD. When buying PC/laptops is better knowing what you're buying, the best for a laptop would be an intel CPU + some GPU like 630m or better, depending for what you gonna use it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You need a GPU to have any graphical capability at all. Intel HD Graphics are GPUs.

APU is completely AMD marketing speak for a CPU and GPU on one die. There's nothing special about it. It's something that only AMD has in that only AMD bothers naming it something.

As for the 630m...you know that Intel's GT3 chips are about the same performance-wise right? And that Iris Pro is maybe 10% slower than AMD's best integrated graphics in most cases?

APUs are ondie GPUs, such as Intel Integrated HD whatevers. Get your facts straight.

Intel HD graphics are valid if you gonna use your computer for documents, but not to play games obviously. If he wants good performance he should get a CPU with Intel Iris pro graphics, or a laptop with a dedicated GPU which is better. So he can't really complain about "Intel HD graphics suck, I can't play games on them", if he bought a laptop for documents.

When I bought my now-ancient laptop I also had no real idea just how low-end most integrated graphics were, and definitely didn't know they were virtually welded into the laptop (tough to remove, and even if you did there isn't any room in there to add anything nicer anyway.)

So after I enlightened the crap out of myself (aka too late), someone said "Hey, just buy one of those USB graphics cards!" :O Had never heard of external graphics cards, and for good reason.. Researched them and found out some-odd years back they did indeed plan on making some external USB graphics cards for laptops but for some reason (the article didn't say) they shelved production of them :| Like they wouldn't sell :| I was fully ready to shell out a "less than a new laptop" amount for one til I found out they'd evaporated :( If I had to guess I'd guess that the laptop makers enjoy their crap-cards being fused into their laptops so that what's happening right now would happen (that being my laptop being left in the graphical dust and me squirming for something better, even though my laptop is still in fine working order).

External graphics cards are okay if they're really good USB3 or Thunderbolt, but that's the price of a new rig anyway. Plus, most of them are professional DSPs like the black magic ones.

Laptops just aren't for gaming, the best you get is not even remotely "mobile" so you'll only save yourself the plug/unplug fun part of moving your PC at the expense of money and performance.

Unless you have an MSi or DIY rig. More difficult to overclock the MSi, and DIY is obviously the hardest thing to do, but the benefits outweigh the costs.

See the new MSi laptops. They came out pretty recently and they're sick.

1TB HDD instead of at least a hybrid drive? Especially for mobile? Sorry, but it looks like a whole lot of expensive plastic waste. I read it is loud, ugh. So no teamspeak either.

Kiiiiiinda your own fault for not doing your homework. :P
HD4000 should be able to run less graphically taxing games but don't mistake it for a gaming laptop. I wonder what was in the humble bundle that was so bad, indie games aren't typically very taxing (oh hello another platformer with "retro" graphics).

Doesn't matter if its intel or amd, an integrated graphics solution isnt meant for an intensive game or task.

Don't blame intel for what's obviously your fault for not looking into things further. Run games at lower resolutions, turn settings down, and try game booster. In the future if you purchase another laptop or desktop try to find one with a reasonably decent discrete GPU.

If all else fails, you can simply format it, install one of those lovely free non-windows Operating Systems that are floating around, and then sell it on. You obviously haven't had it long, so you can sell it on as "as new" and even disclose your willingness to operate as a go-between for the original warranty if anything goes wrong (though mention you will require postage costs if it comes to that). If the seller on amazon wasn't just a storefront, perhaps to them about transferring warranty ownership to someone else (as you plan to sell the item due to your mistake).

You won't recoup ALL of your losses, but you'll be able to recycle most of the cash you bombed on that laptop and put it into something better suited for gaming. Once again, laptops are not a good choice for gaming. They are designed first and foremost to be portable, and anything that comes after that is a bonus. If you don't like the idea of a full tower gaming computer, I would seriously consider looking into an mATX PC of some sort. If you know how to build your own computer you can get a surprising amount of power into a small space, provided you take some time to consider a suitable case and the size of the parts. If you don't know how to, shop around online.

I would have made one myself but I'm clumsy and don't have a good work surface or lighting to really build one (getting stiff wires into place is a pain). Consider cutting your losses by selling it on and investing in an actual gaming PC. It always sucks when such a blunder happens, but on the bright side, it's the kind of mistake that you only make once. I hope you manage to work something out soon!
