I prefer the classics personally. The Vicar of Dibley, Dinnerladies, Fawlty Towers, Keeping up Appearances, Open All Hours, Porridge, Red Dwarf, Absolutely Fabulous, My Family, The Brittas Empire ... I could go on, there's a load of great ones. :p

IT Crowd, Black Adder and... my most favourite Red Dwarf.

If you haven't seen it, watch it. It is as good as people say, if you understand British humour.

I think the first and second(?) series weren't too bad. Went badly downhill after that.

Seconded.
Also: "Teachers" (esp series 1-3) because it has similar real-life situation comedy mixed with incredible silliness/cutaway gags.

Red Dwarf, Blackadder, Vicar of Dibley, Fawlty Towers and Open All Hours are my favourite. I also quite like the more modern Spy.

The Thick of It (political comedy) because no-one else seems to have mentioned it.
This is Jinsy ( Alt Alt Alt Alt )
Spaced - Before Paul, Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead, Simon Pegg, Edgar Wright and Nick Frost made Spaced.
Not sitcoms but bizarre British comedy:
Chris Morris' Jam - "Unsettling"
Big Train (Alt Alt Alt) - Very fucking funny. Serious.
If you don't mind a bit of old-timey goodness:
Porridge (classic sitcom set in prison starring Ronnie Barker and Richard Beckinsale)
Open All Hours ( classic sitcom set in a corner-shop, starring Ronnie Barker and David Jason)
Rising Damp (Classic sitcom set in an appartment building starring Leonard Rossiter and Richard Beckinsale)

The Young Ones. I feel like I've seen every episode a billion times, but it still makes me laugh.
