Flatmate updated his own PC, has his old graphics card removed and nothing better to do with it, so I can have it if I want. Would I have any problems slotting it into my system, or should I be able to handle it?

My pre build system from HP (yes, its old)
My current video card, Radeon HD 6570 with 2GB

Potential replacement, Radeon R9 270 with 2GB

You call an i7 old? hides his quad core HP.

Why not just try the card?

The system is from 5 years ago.

Not sure if I'd have any problems, and didn't want to risk doing damage if something would happen.

Purple fire makes anyone less willing to take risks.

Yes, that happened to me with an old computer.

My PC was made in 2007, and isn't even near those specs... the struggle!

Your PSU is tiny. R9 270 requires 500W min.

Alright, thanks.

Edit - Flatmate just pointed out he has a old power supply as well, but not sure it will fit in my system. Guess I'll take a look later, since I'm not sure on details to share for that one. :P

Should fit (the PSU), they're usually the same size. Although I'm not sure the GPU would fit. I had a problem with my old PC where my GPU wouldn't fit because of how large they've gotten and it interfered with the ram. I'm not an AMD guy but it looks like it would be the case with your MB. But if its fits you shouldn't have any problems, besides the PSU.

Yes, that. I don't know the particular HP system, but IIRC we had problems at work with a pre-built PC where the PSU being custom or motherboard using a special plug, or something of this sort which prevented us from using a graphics card that needed a power cable connected to it.

But if that's not the case with your system, then a PSU update might solve the problem.

The only decent graphics cards I can think of which should work with that power supply are the GeForce 750/Ti.

If you were asking if this card will work with that slot - I googled a bit, apparently PCI Express 3.0 is compatible with 2.1, which is what your old card is. This should not be a problem.

If you mean in general if you can just stick it in there, then BongoGT's post above is relevant.

before trying anything, check if your power supply has x2 6-pin connectors, because that's required to start the r9 270.

almost everything is fine, the cpu is still great -motherboard will do, ram is still great for any game only that PSU 300W won't do ...
a R9 270 will use up to ~ 180W under full load/stress, best way would be to replace the PSU too,
^ would be a very good upgrade - roughly put 4x times better than your current gpu (= most new games - high, 1080p, 60fps)

min. PSU would be 450W - you can see for yourself if you google: psu calculator
^ could even work with the connectors if you have enough ... but might crash under full load
(cpu 100W; gpu 180W; mb+ram+hdd+?? ~ 50W or a little more depending whats in)

yeah that card use like 250W in full load 180W is TDP
u need 500 w PSU two 6-pin external power connectors
and that card is huge u need lot of space for it probably would not fit in this case
Card size H=43 mm L=253 mm W=142 mm
13 x 10.6 x 2.9 inches
