go to TF2 folder, open steamid file, change the appid to the id of game to idle. click hl.exe.
an error will pop up, dont click ok move it to the side. check steam, it will show you are playing the game whose id you put in the file.
launching tf2 via steam will reset the file

This works in linux. I would suggest using a smaller game like super hexagon though.

True. Missed that. Change the appid to the game you wish to receive cards drops from and save as. Run the .sh file from the folder. The game will load normally but steam will recognize the appid you changed. No error will show. All of this is done natively. Wine not required.
