Gintama?

Well, it has some serious shounen story arcs, but mostly it is comedy. It parodies most of the famous and popular shounen titles from the last 30 years from Dragon Ball to Sword Art Online, but sometimes it has 50-60 years old references.

I'm at ep 141. Not much I can say about it. It's got a specific type of humour, try watching like 20 eps. if you'll get bored drop it. It really requires so time to get into, there are few serious arc's that are really good, but usually It's episodic comedy episodes. Actually usually I found the jokes unfunny, I don't think this anime deserves such scores and attention. Great Teacher Onizuka and Detroit Metal City are the best comedy anime's I ever saw, highly recommend those.

GINTAMA IS THE BEST ANIME

It's good, but it's also somewhat overrated. The good parts are when the show becomes serious, for example when Gin, the main character, goes badass.

The original series had a lot of episodes which were mainly just throwaway comedy one-offs and weren't related to any overall arc. Generally, the episodes which were part of an arc are the ones worth watching, there's a list here: http://www.yorozuyasoul.com/gintama/arcs

There are a ton of "in-jokes" and parodies, so whether or not you find the show funny or not depends on your own knowledge of other shows.

I'd advise watching the serious/drama arcs, such as the Benizakura arc (or just watch the film) and all the ones featuring Yoshiwara. Although you probably won't get who the characters are if you skip a lot.

It's got a load of random/funny moments in it, But there are serious arc's in it in between e.g. Benizakura Arc. I say give it a try, my opinion maybe biased cus I really like this anime a lot (it's in my top 10)

awesome anime, very funny and emotional, you'll laugh a lot, and cry a lot, it's a good all-around anime.

I hear the manga is really good, not sure about the anime. I thought it was funny, but the comedy got a bit too repetitive so I dropped it.
