I think it is something like supporting your favorite football team/ e-sports team? I guess the concept is similar in terms of you wish for them to be the best or some sort... I've watched Movies, Listen to Pop songs, for a long time but I have never had someone I idolised. Pretty much like the Actor/Actress or Singer but never to the point I'll go crazy over them. However, its not too hard understand why some will for me. :)

Hmmm I think that people who get obsessed are more towards a little delusional in a way where they hope to marry their idol or be friends with them? While you are more in reality (I forgot the word to describe πŸ˜†) where you know that is almost impossible so you don't dwell in the fantasy (That's my best analysis lol)

Yeah, I am a little realistic and rational in this aspect but I still want to be friends if I ever met/know them in real life. Of course, I will like to marry a beauty too. hahaha. I am just not the kind to pin my hopes up when I do not see it happening. Doesn't mean I do not have that fantasy just not over the moon for it not chasing them all around. :D

Hahhahah who doesn't wanna marry a beauty? 🀣 Well yea we should focus more on our life rather than other's life but I guess it is a form of envy or jealousy (even a little) that makes us subconsciously idolize them

You're right, it happens all over the world. But with kpop it's even more intense and it seems to me it's seen as "normal" in their culture, given just how many (asian) people are obsessed with it.

My 1st impression was that they are very Twice-like. I do listen to girl groups often like GG, AoA, T-ara, 9Muses, etc. Just this song isn't in the range. I saw from earlier comment that you're looking for KDramas to watch, the 2 songs come from drama that I've watched and you may like them. The Gentlemen of Laurel Tree Tailor Shop and My ID Is Gangnam Beauty(Not finished watching but its very nice) is highly recommended. Temperature of Love gives off a really good romance vibe when I was watching it but hasn't finished it, I will when I have nothing to watch. While You Were Sleeping by Suzy is a watch too, well for Suzy at least, lol

I kinda took a break for a few years and back to support this newly-formed group called Fromis_9. Not at all, not my cup of tea and never bothered with it. I do recall it was rather popular among female teens in the West at some point, right ?

I do listen to the famous metal band X-Japan, Tha Blu Herb, an alt. rap band based in Sapporo and Enka singer and actress Meiko Kaji, whom I discovered through the inclusion of some of her songs in the Kill Bill movie. That's pretty much it, when it comes to East-Asian music, but I have an open mind and look forward to expand my horizons and find some cool new stuff to listen to.

I don't, I mostly dislike the genre and the whole fanbase around it for being obnoxious. no, I love pop music and I love metal music although I enjoy listening to rock, folk, classical and many other genres such as reggae and so on (I just don't like jazz music xD).. but I really don't understand and don't like those "idols subgenres"..
having been listening to pop music for 20+ years, of course, even if I'm European I've got dozens of CDs, tapes or even vinyls by singers from Japan, China, South Korea and so on, but they are mostly female singers not related to that "idol" / "constructed" / "band" image that I associate with the terms Kpop or Jpop..
one of my favourite singers for instance is Aikawa Nanase, who's really awesome under every aspect, and has made astonishing records but has nothing to do with that world..
I really don't like putting a national sign before a genre. Pop music, metal music and so on are universal genres and they can be interpreted in different ways by everyone in the world, so a Korean singer who sings pop music to me is simply a Korean pop singer, I couldn't care less about her ethnicity or mother tongue as long as she's good to me..

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmmm what an interesting view on song genres πŸ€” Well what you said is our generic way of listening to music, just enjoying the rhythm without a care of how the singer looks, its purely on talent and singing capabilities. What I think about Kpop or Jpop is that they are trying to sell more than music? (That is just my view) They will be training them for years in order to come out this perfect idol that is kind of a girl/guy crush which will attract people to them, which somehow is kind of the money maker of the company. One thing that I do like about kpop is that they put up lots of effort to create music, dance choreography which they find experts on these fields to help them in creating a song that suits the image of the idols. Well in the end everybody is looking for a way to make money but hey at least they are not using illegal methods to earn them. πŸ˜†

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I completely agree about your vision!
I'm European and I've been raised listening to rock music, then shifted to metal as a teenager and after that I started to enjoy lots of pop and folk music among the other genres, as an adult.
I really do not like the "visual" aspect in the music. My favourite band has been Helloween since the '90s (I was born in the '80s), I saw them more than 20 times live in Europe, but I don't even know half of their music videos.
I enjoy music beyond races, dances, and often even lyrics. I can listen to far right or far left bands without any problems (and I never experienced problems here in Northern Italy by the way).
So I see the KPOP and JPOP (I stress "jpop" 'cos it was already something really famous 10+ years ago, while the KPOP thing started a bit after as far as I remember) acts as "constructed" bands. They dance, they have a huge management, they all are made up by 5+ "singers", it's a visual experience more than a musical one.
I really can't enjoy that thing. I enjoy vocals, guitars, real instruments, minimalistic approachs, real concerts. I saw tons of female pop artists who played only with a piano or a guitar alone. I saw Beatrice Martin from Canada playing in front of an audience of 15 people in Milan 2-3 years ago with a small keyboard and she made one of the greatest concerts ever in my life.
That's music. I really don't care about dancing, choreographies and so on.. that belongs in my humble opinion to theater, entertainment or just show.. and to me, music isn't show business. That's why I never watched any "talent show". It's all fake. There are so many musicians who are extremely talented and spend their life playing and studying without an audience, while on the other side there are those huge companies (here of course we have Sony, Universal etc.) who take a good looking singer and make him a star, or in KPOP they take 5 girls and make them dance like marionettes only to make money as you were saying.
I really don't like that approach, but I'm not criticizing it - it's just something I wouldn't pay for :) I want music, while the "idol" thing is a show. Like wrestling compared to real fighting sports. But still as you said it's absolutely not illegal, and I'll never even criticize our Western idols - if someone pays for their music or their shows made up by dances, 20 dancers on stage and no instruments, playback and so on, it's ok. It's not a fraud, it's not illegal. I just don't like that entertainment, I prefer other things. And there are hundreds of awesome Japanese and Korean singers who don't give a heck to dance and idoling, they just make their way as indie singers and that's awesome, unfortunately we live so far away that there's no money to make European tours.. so we have just to import CDs, and it's great.
Thanks <3
