Hi,

I've been putting on some weight in the last two years and dropping significantly until recently as I started neglecting it.

I spend 8 hours a day working and am quite physically active. Now, when I get home ma I tend to spend a lot of time on my computer working and gaming.

[Update] I had to make a few modifications as I believe I made everybody confused with what I was looking for.

I want to be more active and do some exercises while I am in front of the PC, but I want to make it fun. I don't intend to buy yet equipment, so I am more than happy to do Push-ups, stretches, sit-ups, yoga, burpees and squats and whatever you suggest.

I don't play soul-like games, so I wouldn't go there, but I'm happy to hear suggestions of exercise challenges I can do during my gaming and working session.

E.g. 10 Push-ups after compleating a mission or 10 Lift-ups after dying and so forth.

I like playing strategy, action-adventure, RPG, management and simulator games. I am NOT looking for games to play, but exercises to do while I game MY GAMES.

Because of this, I find it more difficult for some games that maybe death isn't an option.

I have to mention that I don't intend to purchase equipment, but rather exercise using my body-weight during my gaming session. What do you suggest I should do or what did you do to keep yourself active while gaming?

Thank you!

PS: Below you have an example, but for Dark Souls. I am looking for non-souls like games, especially if the game has less deaths.

Are you happy with where you are physically?

Yes, I am quite active
Yes, but it could be better
I don't care about it
No, I need to work more on myself
No, I won't do anything about it

I exercized with the ring fit on the switch, unfortunately there is only one "game" for it, so if you don't got a switch, not enough reason to get one for that alone.
Although you can also use the ring while watching tv or do something else, unfortunately my switch battery is faulty that it drains way too fast and i need to replace it and haven't been doing my exercizes for 2-3 months now.

I have the Switch and the Ring Fit, but that would just mean I would not play my other games. What I'm actually looking for is a challenge suggestion so I can work out to the games that I like playing.

The problem is I am not searching for games for exercise, but rather get a challenge workout for the games I currently play. So,. I'm looking for that kind of suggestions.

Maybe try Game Dev Tycoon that you already have, its fun management sim games. I play it like hours.
And maybe challenge yourself to get 10/10 ratings

I am going to at some point, but I'm not looking for a game challenge, but rather a exercise challenge.

E.g. Get to level 1 on Game Dev Tycoon = 10 Pushups. It doesn't have to be game specific, but rather genre specific. E.g. Strategy games, RPG, Action-Adventure. They can be generic.

I used to play Dota and League of Legends a lot. You know.. the mobas. I had the mindset that the enemy has less gold, if I die less. So I would 'punish' myself for every death. After a game I would do push ups = my deaths x 10.
So if I died 4 times, I would do 40 push ups. Etc.

True, but I wanted a cheaper alternative and since I game late at night after working and working for my business, I pretty much have 1-3 hours of gaming hour. In that time I don't mind exercising while I game, but what I was referring to is to get like a challenge.

Not really and you can rest it on your belly or wherever else. But after long sessions (2h+) while holding it only in my hands, I really notice my muscles tiring. So it is some sort of exercise. ;)

I got mine 6 days ago and already spent 23h gaming with it. It does a much better job than I expected, especially regarding Proton. Games that are officially unsupported, run flawlessly.
I only wish they'd finally release their docking station. There is no other USB hub that really convinces me.

My biggest worry is that I may not be able to purchase it on the Reserved date. Do you have a couple of days or weeks to make the purchase or you have to make it right then and there?

I've got some issues personally and I had to take my entire savings because of it.

You have 72h to finalize your purchase when it is your turn, afterwards your reservation is lost.

I've seen one report of someone who failed to make their purchase in time and Steam support re-established their reservation. But I wouldn't bet on them saving your reservation too.

Best wishes that you manage to save enough again till it's your time.

Pokemon Go may be the only affordable at the moment and I do have a rigorous walk, I can't leave my home and do that. That kills the purpose of me working or playing on my PC.

What I meant and I had to update my topic was a challenge based on other type of games I play, that aren't soul-like games to work out between something. I gave a few examples, but I find it more fun when people share their thoughts.

  1. Use a gym ballon as a seat and alternate between your usual seat and the ballon.
  2. Use a sit/stand desk (I have the BEKANT from Ikea) and switch between the two positions from time to time during the day.
  3. I've recently bought a treadmill (KINGSMITH WalkingPad R2) that you can easily move under the desk while in stand position. I walk during some gaming sessions / working from home.

The most important thing is to change position from time to time.

These are excellent ways to keep yourself fit, but at this point I'm not looking to spend for that, bur rather do some workout without equipment and basically ask you guys to challenge me a set of workout, based on different types of games, because it's a lot more difficult maybe to come up with ideas of a workout challenge when a game is slow passed like a strategy game.

Don't know if others have suggested it, but I've seen several people hooking up those dance mats, and using them in other games. How it's done, I have no idea. But maybe it's an option. It'll be your controller, and you'll be controlling using your feet and legs.

Yeah, I see. I don't think this is something native on the Nintendo Switch that I've seen though, although I could be wrong. I know you said you don't play souls games, but mostly what I've seen is people using it for that type of games. It's the same with people hooking up pianos and other weird things to play with. I imagined that if it's possible to do with souls games, it might be possible with other games as well. It could be too much of a hassle though to set it up for each game.

Generally what I mean is that I don't mind the nature of the game, but rather set a rule based on the genre of game. Was hoping someone already does some sort of stuff like that during pandemic. For soul-like games I would have used the death meter to do my exercise, but with RPG, strategy, action-adventure or management games it's rather difficult to decide what can I do to incorporate similar workouts, because deaths aren't so frequent there.

Specially if you are into RPG and a game when you can choice where to add you're additionnal skillpoint (Strength / Constitution / Intelligence ...), do a training when you're character become more strong, like 5 Push-up for each point added in strength, 10 Crunchs for each point in Constitution, meditate for 1 minute for each point of Intelligence ...
Or simply do some exercice when you level-up, according to you're character main stats (Strength = Push-up / Constitution = Crunch / Intelligence = meditate)

Set the rule for your self that your gaming time is limited to your exercise time ( or have a X:1 ratio ). You earn gaming time by exercising.

So 1 Hour of gaming Would mean?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You'd have to find the right ratio, and activities.

It could be you get an hour of gaming for every 15 minutes of cardio.
It could be you get an hour of gaming for every 5k you run, 1k you swim, 8k you walk, 10k you ride a bike.
It could be you get an hour of gaming for every 100 calories you burn over 1800 (what anyone burns just sitting around).
It could be you get a minute of gaming for push-up, jumping jack, or squat-thrust.

I don't know the ideal starting numbers, but you can give yourself a generous start and ramp up the requirements at the end of each month.

Since your playing strategic games - no idea what to expect here though - if they have like a round system, whaaaat about doing something after each round? Like after round one you get up and do 5 sit ups (or anything else). It shouldn't be too much bc it would interrupt the game too much thinking
Oooooor if you get something big you worked on, reward yourself with a 10 min break for sports?
I totally don't do that though. Bc I either forget time and/or can't make myself do it. I try to play more Beatsaber with the VR though aaaaand I'm thinking about getting a stepper for under the table? No idea how that would work. Don't have it either atm. But I liked the ideas from NSye. At least the ball. Won't get a new desk really....

Set your own rules with each game.
Push,ups,jumping for x minutes etc.
When to do it?Can be for each level, for each death ,each kill, for every 10min gaming, for every snack you eat while gaming ,
You gotta create it on your own ,because nobody here does know your body limits .

Set your own rules with each game.

I would rather need your help. It's more fun that way. In the end, I could come with an final verdict.

When to do it?Can be for each level, for each death ,each kill, for every 10min gaming, for every snack you eat while gaming ,

I've not thought about the kill part. Because there's games I play that obviously as punishment for death, but killing is quite the opposite and quite a good idea.

You gotta create it on your own ,because nobody here does know your body limits .

I understand that, obviously I can start somewhere, but this whole topic is for fun. I like a bit of a challenge. I don't think I know my own body limits. I mean, I know what I can lift using weights, but I've not pushed myself in workout like push-ups and other workouts to see where I am. And since I've been rather lethargic, I think I might have gone out of shape for a while.

I did 2.5 years of physical therapy college (out of 5) and have been training for 11 years. I'm gonna just say it here: this is bullshit. Doing this type of thing will give you no results and the risk of problems/injury due to many factors, such as no exercise experience, lack of proper warm up and unbalanced workouts is basically 100%. If you wanna change, commit 30 minutes of your day to walking around your block. It's simpler, easier and It will give you much better results without any of the drawbacks.

I am only asking because a lot of gamers struggle keeping a good healthy balance between gaming and working out. It's ideal to sit up at times, but having a challenge, for me, is a lot more fun.

I normally have a limited time to game. Like an hour to maximum four a day, where I switch from working from my desk to just straight up gaming.

I am planning to use the suggestions of you guys to create some workout plan for gamers, but more suggestions the better. Going out for 30 minutes and walking is what I do daily, from going and going to work. As I mentioned, I am overall a active guy when it comes to outdoors and outside work. I have to lift up 25-50KG objects and carry them around, pushing and other physical workout.

What I want to do is MORE. Since I don't go to the gym for a while, due to some financial decisions, I want to just challenge myself to set like workout or punishments reminders to keep a good healthy and active workout from the moment I step in the house. Meaning, I get to sit from 3PM until 9 PM on my posterior, in which 2-4 hours I spend working and the rest I game.

I don't plan on over-killing myself with some sort of inhuman workout, but doing some regular push-ups, lift-ups and burpees or whatever you guys suggest was the whole idea. Zero equipment, straight up simple work.

I hope that helps to clarify a few things that I was suggesting and also what I was referring was in relation to games that I generally play. It's easier to select a workout plan for a game that you die a lot and for each death you do 5 push-ups, but I struggle to think of a game where death isn't so often or not at all, like a management or long turn-base strategy games.

This video has a timer : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koMp3ei4xJw

Everytime you git gud in a soul-like game (or any other) you try it.

Or pick several games, class them based on your desire to play each. The longer you do the challenge, higher in the list you can play.
Only for a set period of time (30mn-1h), afterwards you try again.

You could also convert minutes doing the challenge in hours allowed to play.
