I googled that but kinda couldnt find the answer i am searching for ...

Basically i am holding on to about 3 million pictures with questionable content due to server failure of a site with a questionable content i help moderate .
Problem is my pc feels just slow last couple days and im not sure if thats the cause of it .
Its about 800 gbs of Manga and Doujins ... first it was 600 then i got another 200gb batch sent over few days ago.

Thing is the PC was fine until maybe 2 days ago ( cant rly tell cause i havent use it past few days cause work and stuff ) ... but right now everything takes what it feels like far to long to load ...
Deleting a folder with 50 files thats less then a MB in size takes about 15 seconds , trying to open any of the folders with the manga that i havent opened before takes about 10 to 15 sec aswell .
If i had opened it before it seems to load in 2-3 sec , but first time open is just far to long it feels like .

So yeah wall of text aside , Could it be that having Ridiculous amount of small files on the Only HDD ( which is not even cut on different label drives ) slow down the PC ?

PS: Tried to run malwarebytes already ... it didnt catch anything so i dont think its a virus , but it can be i guess ... ?

Will add giveaways later on ... so check the topic again if thats what you came for

Edit: Thanks to everyone who helped me out , i think i got the general idea of what went wrong and how to fix it ... In the process of moving them to an external HDD Right now and then will preform the Cleanups Defragments and all the other necessary stuff ( but that will be after i wake up )

Feel free to join the giveaways in the first comment , nothing major sadly :|

Edit 2: Problem solved ... got rid of the ... um stuff ... dont question it >.>
Ran a defragment and everything is working fine now .
Thanks to everyone who helped me :)

Deactivate superfecth (this is not mandatory), index and miniatures, while you have them

I disagree with deactivating superfetch myself, but it wouldn't hurt either way. The thumbnails are probably more problematic.

Disabling Superfetch is optional always.

Have you tried to defragment it? (dunno if it's the right word... in german there's an option "Defragmentierung" which basically "presses" the smaller datas together to make the small storage between them usable.. I guess.. xD)

Yeah it was actually that ... the PC is relativelly new ... bout a year old .

But i have NEVER ran the thing on it before .

Got rid of all the files and it started working normally ... now that i ran a defragment its actually running faster then i recall it being lol D:

Not really sure if thats a good idea or not tho D:

Also care to recommend good program to do the splitting with ?

WinRAR and 7zip are the best I can think of. WinRAR is probably the best. There are some good tutorials online that explain how to split it and compress.

Just realized what you wanted. You can use in the built in disk manager for windows to partition it. But you may have to do a fresh install. As windows tends to store the MBR (Master Boot Record) at two separate ends of the disk.

Windows' one probably won't work. The one from Humble Bundle worked for me, there's probably some more, no need to go straight for format c: and reinstall :P

Just remembered, I "only" had to move already-free 20 GBs from D: to C:, not split already fully-full drives into two. Can't say for sure if it will work for full drives...
Maybe you can make new partition from free space, copy files from full partitions and after freeing that space again split it and merge with new drive? (Not really worthy doing if you have like 10 GB free and need to move 800 GBs tho...).

Edit: found some tutorial on their page, looks like you can only do it if you have some free space.

Ahh, if you have tons of free space on drive, then you should be good to go. Just remember, it's Windows, those things like to be fragile when doing stuff like that, so keep Windows Install Disk/USB close :P

Is it a standard drive or SSD? If its pretty full, more than 70-80%. It can definitely cause slow downs. Also depending on where its stored, like a desktop. The desktop on most OSs is set to keep it constantly ready. So the less you can have your desktop, at least file wise, will help. Shortcuts and the sorts are fine.

EDIT: Sorry for the technical question. I work in a small repair shop for computers and servers.

Its standart HDD ... and they are stored internally , not on the desktop ...
There is a bunch of shit on it tho , which i will clear now i guess :p

You can use a program called WinDirStat. It will show you want folders are taking up the most.

System, System32, WinSXS, etc should not be touched. Worst case, you can typically google what it is. Window 7 forums, ServerFault, etc usually will provide a decent (sometimes lamen) explanation about it.

What i found was stuff about Standby Memory and no Free Memory ...
Its like im using 3-4 gigs of ram but literally all the rest is on standby , which couldve been the cause of the slow loading / deleting times .

So i downloaded something called RamMap which let me terminate the standby memory , but it didnt seem to have fixed the issue at all .

Anyway i borrowed an external HDD from a neighbour and will try to move all the stuff to it ... and see if that solves the issue .

Cause if its not the files that are lagging the PC im kinda clueless :|

Basically the standby memory is being used to store data. So this could be cached thumbnails, files, etc. You could try disabling Superfetch and see if it helps. Some users have mentioned it above and its optional to have one.

Yes they can. Even one large file can slower down more then many little files, if he fragmented (splitted) on many little clasters on all over partition.
Tried to clean up and use defragmentator?

If it's an SSD, no. If it's an HDD, yes.

Think of an HDD like a giant library, and the files not as books but as pages. A file consist of multiple pages of varying amounts, and the pages can be spread over multiple books. So in order to get a file, it has to open multiple books spread around the library, and get the required pages from each book. Sometimes a book suddenly becomes smaller because something was deleted, so there is once again space to shove in some pages, next time something needs to be written (saved) and it fits in the book, it will shove it in that book (first available space).

The more books there are, the bigger the mess, the slower the processing of files.

It's not 100% accurate in technical terms, and there are ways to optimise it even with that many files (Defragmentation, indexing, etc etc), but it should get the point across. The fuller a drive is, the more work the HDD has to do to get what you want. Like an overworked librarian.

Yes it could slow it down, especially if the files share the same drive as your Windows.

Try a defrag with Glary Utilities perhaps. Run the Windows Disk Cleanup as well, see how much the thumbnails file is taking up. Also, keep the folder(s) somewhere other than your desktop as someone else mentioned so that it is not constantly being accessed.

It might be worth to let it run a good long defrag and optimize, if you cannot simply remove all the files for now. Wish there was a better solution for ya. =(
One more thing- have you checked the health of the hard drive itself? Download a tool called Crystaldiskinfo so it can check the health of the HD. It will let you know if it is failing ahead of time...

I moved all the files and ran and optimization defrag on the main HDD ( it had about 120gigs worth of data on it so it was pretty fast )
And yeah simple defrag did solve my problem ( after i got rid of all the data i was storing temporary ofc )

Im using it to defrag my old External HDD , which is 2 TB and have never been defragmented for ...5 years >.<
Its literally all red . I was wondering why its so slow , tough its just dying from old age >.<

Cant thank you enough tbh , the tool you recommended seems to have several useful futures built in it so i just bough it .

Note taken to , that i should defragment stuff once a month :p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Hey dude I am glad to help!

Windows will typically defrag by itself once a week, I think the defaults are Wednesdays. It works ok but Glary takes it a step above and optimizes the file structure. I've only ever used the free version but I install it on all computers I work on.

Other than that, defrag once every month or two is typically fine. The problem in this case was a large amount of new files placed onto the disk recently. With them all fragmented on an already fragmented drive, the poor HD was having to jump from one end to another just to read the files. This simply adds up to time, because the hard drive has to seek and read at all these different locations to retrieve a file. If you defrag regularly, the hard drive needs to only look in one place to get a file.

Glad things are looking up and up, have a good one! =)

The more you have in your hard drive does NOT affect speed.
How fragmented what you have in your hard drive is? DOES effect speed.
So if you have a lot of smile files cutting up your game installs, THAT could cause some slowdowns in loading and etc.
You can have as much downloaded as you want assuming it's not fragmented without it affecting speed UNLESS you are trying to run a lot of it at once. That's the exception. Because then your disk needs to access more at once, obviously.

it kinda happens based on wat windows you have, windows 10 have some index active on the main system, w8 or 7 doenst most of time, you can also forxe the index on the sytem files, and course take a look at your virtual memory, sometimes ppl set a ridiculous number becase hey 1tb! but if the files invade the vm then your system will fail, also some hds show their teoubles if you suddenly fill 90% or more of it, in special disc drives, ssd's dont show this so much.
Try check the index, remake it, do a defrag and maybe a scan for troubles on the hdd, it should help.

try to arhive this files without compression, if its a problem with a large amount small files - this may help (but you need a large amount of free space)
also mb windows indexing this files, if you have this option enabled - that may slow down pc

Yes, it's happen to my you-know-what-weebs-collect video
got too much of it and it slows down
after some auslogic optimize defrag and some file managing it's getting kinda faster

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Run Auslogics Disk Defrag, in settings/alogrythms set Move System files and Optimize by prefetch, in Disk Cleanup check everything.
Now run the defrag in Defrag and Optimize. It'll take a good few hours, but it will speed up disk access.
All the Standby Memory use makes me think you have photo or movie player loading on startup, therefor filling up your ram in case you want to watch something. Check all your startup items and disable all but the essentials to run, then give it a try. You should find the culprit program by testing each item re-enabled one at a boot.
Good luck :)

I got a couple of hundred thousands of files and was going to say it's fine (better to turn windows index off though!) till i read 3 million..

Malware and virus is a distinction, if Malwarebytes says you are clean, doesn't mean you couldn't have a virus, why i still use both Malwarebytes and something like Eset, and even the best can sometimes miss something (especially when it's new) some will say only a good Antivirus Suite is enough, and they do go better in getting malware too these days.

There is just alot that can result to thing slowing down aside from a full hd, but you already been given things to work with.
