Good that I downloaded all the anime I wanted (several hundred GB of anime). Scumbag move USA...

Too bad then. Guess I'll have to pirate my games on FileServe (and have to endure the terrible speed)

Imagine those who bought a year's worth of premium account a few days ago... :(

I totally agree. Everyone who doesn't backup his data on at least 2 locations (I backup locally on my home server and on an external hard drive in regular intervals) is just asking for trouble...

1) Almost all file hosting sites require you to be a paid customer if you don't want to lose your files because of inactivity, so why pay for a online backup which might one day screw you for different reasons (ex.: shutting down of the site)? I am more secure in my own redundant server and additional external drives, thank you.
2) The FBI doesn't have jurisdiction outside the US. Domestic laws trump foreign ones.
3) In some countries (for example mine) it's allowed to download music/video for personal use, so the USA can stick his laws you know where :)

That doesn't change the fact that what occurred was beyond anyones foresight.
Also you mention why pay for cash for membership when you can have personal redundancy... you do realize having a good home server for media/important files with redundancy costs more than most memberships right? Not only that but you have to pay for upkeep and maintenance as well (by either time or money)

That is debatable. The cost of 2 years RapidShare is is equal for 6 years of electricity for my Atom low-power rig (which reboots occasionally for updates, otherwise it's always-on). You do realize that you don't have control over your data if you keep it on a third-party infrastructure? Who's gonna guarantee your data integrity and privacy? The difference in perspective shows how much you value your (private or business) data.

Sorry mate, but you don't know how we roll at work.
We NEED to have the files online because we don't work at one place only.
We move a lot, and HDD ARE way more dangerous to carry around. We work with the files, edit them and reuload them to the account. They where always updated.
Obviously, we DO have hard backups on HDD, but those are 3month outdated (we do hard backups every 3 months). That means that 3 month of works is GONE. Thus, losing a LOT of money and time.
@potemkinhr.
Our company started working in a infrastructure of FTP severs a month ago, and it was still on testing. They weren't able to start earlier with it because of money issues, so we opted for Megaupload to store our files for the time being (a year ago)

Have you considered using multiple online hosting sites from different parts of the world?
Yeah, it eats more bandwidth, but you are covered in case a single (or even more) of them fail for various reasons: Site shutdown, natural disasters, hacking...
You know, don't put all your eggs in one basket.
@MerolaC: Damn, that's horrible timing. If they only put a warning for the owners to download (only) their files safely...

Alright, you have a legitimate reason to use a filehosting service. I can understand that.
What I don't understand, however, is how a company that has to rely on cloud storage chooses a service provider that mostly deals in illegal file sharing and is just a ticking timebomb. Probably because it was cheap, I guess...? But then that would again have to be classified as idiocy.
Sorry, I have little sympathy - whoever is in charge at your company simply should have known better.

I can never download any files, even if I finished those stupid fucking surveys.
