I finished it, but it took me a while to be honest. I was terrified the entire time! :>

It's just awesome :D I would say that it's really worth it, but I just watched markiplier series, so I didn't really feel the game.

What he said basically. It has a really good storyline, and it was definitely worth being terrified. I told my friend earlier today that Outlast really brought the horror genre back. At least it did for me!

I didn't buy it knowing I won't even be able to set a foot into the next somewhat dark-ish corridor before Alt+F4'ing in utter fear.
As such, my last scary game was Silent Hill 2. I quit when there was a chainsaw in a log of wood, still running, with no one there. (This is 2 minutes into the game)

You could say I'm a pussy when it comes to scary games. The only thing I actually finished are both 'The Suffering' games.
I've tried Amnesia but then I found out I was more scared than my gf sitting next to me. (Of course, watching someone play isn't that scary)

Here's the thing - if you want to finish the game, then simply turn off the music. I breezed through the game.

Naw. Though Outlast turned out to be a pretty good game (at least, far better than the average attempt at horror), in the first half of the game it relies far too heavily on screamers and startle scares. Those are just cheap shots and not really horror at all. Startling your audience in the dumbest of ways repeatedly until they get a kind of Pavlovian response going on isn't really 'horror'.

It's kinda like if you had a friend who would stand silently behind open doorways and wait for you to walk by, just so he could jump out and yell "AAAAAAAGAABARGHLA". You wouldn't call that dude scary, you'd call him a dumb douchebag. It's a shame so many people then go on to call that kind of behaviour "super scary A+++ would buy again!", because it only gives bad signals to developers and then drags the horror genre further down overall. Its all too bad because things start to warm up later on, and while it still drops the occasional startle scare, at least it stops with the cop-out screamers and actually tries more to genuinely unnerve you.

The game is quite similar to the Paranormal Activity movie, this makes it scary as hell.

It's not similar in the slightest. The only thing they have in common is a night-vision camera, but if that's enough to make them similar, then any movie with a monster in it is similar to "It". :v

Unless you're mistaking Outlast for Paranormal, which makes your remark more understandable. Outlast is about a journalist who breaks into an asylum and gets chased by freaky inmates. Paranormal is about an asshat who decided to stay in a poorly decorated haunted apartment, confused about what is going on despite print-outs of the houses history being scattered everywhere in the few rooms it has. While they both have cameras, only Outlast has night vision, and only Paranormal is complete garbage.

I'm hoping it's better than Amnesia: Machine for Pigs. Bought that for my SO, she played for five hours, was creeped out but wasn't scared once in that entire time. That sounds very disappointing. :/ Hopefully she'll like Outlast more.

Pig Machine is a real disappointment. No where near as scary as first Amnesia.

Amnesia MFP is no where near as good as Outlast. I finished Outlast before I started playing MFP and I was very dissapointed. The first 2 hours are just plain boring, too many puzzles and nothing legit scared me. The last 2 hours were better, but it didnt make up for the rest of the game.

Wasn't really scary. It was more on immersion, like walking into a dark room feeling that there's something amiss. There weren't a lot of genuine scares.
