Yesterday, i won an open public 5+ level giveaway. I redeemed the key almost immediately and thanked the donator. Right away (ffs!) i started playing the game for 3 hours, since it was on my wishlist for a couple of years. Today, to my big surprise instead of an answer -or nothing really- i see that i got BLACKLISTED!

Well, granted that it's common here to blacklist anyone for any f* reason but blacklisting someone who just won your OPEN PUBLIC giveaway is another level of bs. I have to mention also that:

  1. i had this person on my whitelist afaik for the last 4 years.
  2. i'm only entering giveaways from my wishlist and around 5-10 entries per day visit and i'm not visiting everyday.
  3. Some might think i'm a leach but i've only won just 11 ELEVEN games in the last four (4) years, due to my very low participation limited to open public giveaways and my bad luck. Please feel free to check my profile page.
  4. I'm not creating giveaways anymore since i have serious prosperity problem and, on top of that, cheap affordable bundles are sparse.
  5. However, my give/take ratio is, at least, well-balanced, if not better than many (i mean many!) other users.

So i'm here with this post to rant a little bit, but mostly, to show to all community how people got quite unfair and less of a "community" over the years. That's and indirect answer to those wondering why discussions got quite limited than 5 or 6 years ago.

Thank you all for hearing me out.

There are people that link their gift to go to different people so as soon as you won from them, they blacklist you so next time someone else will win, don't do that myself but read that some do, doesn't have anything to do with the winner.
That said, hope you enjoyed that game ^^

I see, is it new approach to leeches? I've been quite distanced from creating giveaways for some time.

I read somewhere, years ago, that some will blacklist recent winners to prevent them winning again for some time. I do not agree with that practice, but see the reasoning behind it.

Well this is easy to look up who it was.

The community has changed a lot, compared to 8 years ago, to 4 years ago, to now, but it has nothing to do so much about blacklists, that's always been there.
Dude i am over 1000+ whitelists and 200 so blacklists, in my beginning here, i did some "funny" topics some clearly didn't find funny, but those were the times back then, which do you think is more important? Count your blessings with what you do get and what good people still are here.

It's not an indirect answer, it's because in the past the forum didn't get moderated, people got moderated differently, sometimes unfairly, people got bullied away, very good people, people that made this forum lively with puzzles, giveaways, trains etc. That is the direct answer.

But what Oppenh4imer said, some people do that, and it's in their right.

Nah, don't take it personally; there is a good chance that the gifter just wants to spread out gifts to different winners, so he/she just does not want you to win again from the same source.

This has happened to me once: a gifter blacklisted me for this very reason, but at the same time she was very very friendly to me personally. Funny thing is, she is in my whitelist, but since blacklists work both ways, she will never be able to win something from me, unhappily. Or at least I guess that's how it works.

Cheers!

Yeah, i've no hard feelings whatsoever, and tbh it is a good win for long wishlisted game.

Although I'm still curious to know today's standards for a giveaway winner to be thought as not-a-leach. I'm curious because i'm being blacklisted a couple of times more in the last 4 years for just entering public giveaways of 800+ entriesSurely that means the giveaway creator made a honey trap and went through 800-1000 entries just to blacklist people. Sick, right?

That's a lot of conspiracy theory and blind judgement, in a topic you opened to tell us how you not like being judged

Not a conspiracy theory though, it was a giveaway for over 1000 entries, it was around 800 when i entered. Level 1 humble bundle game. The giveaway creator blacklisted me one day after the giveaway ended, which I didn't win of course.

Shuffling through 1000s of entries for any possible reason is not normal. We've both created many public open lvl1 giveaways in the past to know that. Also consider that i don't participate in discussions for years, so that makes the hunt even more strange. I'm sure i wasn't the only one there.

I know that people act strangely , that's what i was trying to emphasize, sorry if i misled you.

Some people blacklist other users for illogical reasons. Sometimes it's not even out of malice, as was stated already.

Whatever the reason, I would not call you a leech as you've given a good amount of games in the past. Your ratio is still not that bad despite not making any new giveaways in recent years. Because of how many bundles and freebies are out there, I don't judge someone for having a ratio slightly less than 1 at all. Especially some people have inflated ratios with overpriced shovelware that has yet to be added to the No CV lists. And there just seems to be more every day.

At the end of the day, I don't take any blacklist addition to heart. I know that some people will add me to their blacklist because they have found out I blacklisted them. To which I just laugh, because there's no point in doing so.

You may have been added to a blacklist today. But now you're on a new whitelist. Hope to see you as a winner on one of mine sometime.

Ah yes, that was me. Tbh, after seeing this thread I don't really see any reason why I should change my mind.

I absolutely get that not everyone can afford to gift games. But my impression was that you are one of those people trying to reach a specific level with rather cheap/trashy giveaways and then stopped gifting for several years. As you can tell by my reaction I'm not a fan of that behaviour.
And btw. how would it be relevant to me that you whitelisted me for 4 years if you didn't create giveaways over these years?

Now you won a pretty good game from me and next time it's supposed to be someone else. My games, my choice.

Alright.
First things first, thank you once again for the gift. I've much enjoyed it so far. You could be happier that the gift is being used as intended instead of piling up in someone's library, but you do you.

Now, you're trying to build some kind of logic behind your impulsive urge to blacklist people for made-up reasons, which is your prerogative, but there are no facts support your "logic", to the extend that you're trying to insult me for supporting your urge. So:

  • Nobody asked you to change your mind for the blacklist. I was curious for the reason behind it and the reason was exactly what i imagined. Thank you that too.

  • I've whitelisted you 4 years ago so i cannot remember the reason. I'm truly sorry for not creating whitelist or other giveaways after that fact, life had other priorities. However I'm sure if i created whitelisted giveaways you would still find them cheap/trashy for your elite taste.

  • "You're one of those people..." is not a phrase I'd take lightly. I'm a 9+ years user with substantial participation in discussions and giveaways and won't tolerate any self-called judge of character. Please rephrase.

  • I've given away over 550 games in the past, won around 380 and most of them were junk. I gave many junk, I received many junk. Many games are fundamentally junk. However, my ratio is balanced. My true value of games also is also balanced (sgtools). Sorry i couldn't give away expensive games, i'm not "one of those people" who give away expensive gifts for the sake of judging others.

  • As i've already stated I'm not entering more than 5-10 giveaways on every visit , all from my shortlist, which excludes me from winning any game in the first place. I'm winning a game every 6-8 months, i even had a year gap sometime during lockdowns. Heck, even my total entries number is waaaay too low for a 9y user. I might be a leech after all, how knows.

Finally, a question: Why are you making public giveaways if you want to judge people harshly with your elite standards? Why not creating group or whitelisted giveaways for perfectly vetted participants? Aren't you having tons of participants who use autobots and are certified leeches with ridiculous ratios? Well, that's a big why right there.

Cheers. 👋

There's an OP if you're curious whether I care, how much and why. No need to put your words in my mouth.

There might be some reasoning behind blacklisting. I was curious for the reason, because there was no foul play or other apparent reason.
According to the ga creator I was "one of those people", so here's another reason for blacklisting beyond the obvious ones.

Happy to be of any help. 😉

So i'm here with this post to rant a little bit, but mostly, to show to all community how people got quite unfair and less of a "community" over the years. That's and indirect answer to those wondering why discussions got quite limited than 5 or 6 years ago.

You turned this pity-party into mocking the creator of said giveaway, (making super clear who they are just by they OP), and also said that you "refrain from participating due to much drama these days." You really shown both the creating drama and the less of a community part better than most. You fit in well with them.

edit:

your tone and choice of words is once again insulting"

So is your behaviour that I pointed out, but that's not an issue for some reason, only people point that out to you? Also, is discussing your in-topic behaviour less on-topic, than you dragging out a multi-year old, out of context comment from *somewhere* that is not even applicable to your situation?
I literally did not say a word about your GA habits, but you immediately go on a defensive, and attack me instead. As you did with Golwar - as they told you why they blacklisted you, instead moving on you started mocking them in multiple of your replies. Don't tell me this is normal behaviour, and this is what you want to see on the site. Being short on money fucking sucks, but lashing out to people and blaming them is not a good coping strategy.

First of all, your tone and choice of words is once again insulting. That's one too many through the years. I guess it's a bad habit you cannot restrain.
Anyway, let me assure you before you appoint yourself as the objective referee, I know where you're coming from regarding people that cannot afford making giveaways, you've made it pretty clear a few years back. In your words:

> The weirdest kind of people are who buy bundles to GA like a maniac, then complain and loudly debate whether they should/could buy a game that costs less than their monthly bundle expenses. They really, really crave attention and generate the reasons to get it.
But in general, as you said, no disposable income (for games) means I can not afford to spend more (on that) - either because really budgeting, other focus, or really not budgeting. It's never really the "I'm so poor I can't even afford to spend a dollar" but having other priorities, for reasons of their own. and yes, sometimes it is greed because they matter only. Others are just broke in countries they better spend money on food

So you've clearly categorized people according to their wallet, and address to them according to that. Fair enough BUT I don't want to discuss your issue here, nor I want to be dragged to some mud-throwing contest for old-times sake. The giveaway creator replied with his reasons for the blacklist, which I don't find quite convincing. But as we all agreed and I clearly said from the beginning, it's his right to do as he pleases.

If you want to discuss anything on-topic, I would be happy to reply to you.

Update:
Adam, you keep editing posts after i've closed the thread. I'm not going to continue on this track of your personal insults and ad hominem attacks against me only to justify your preoccupation. You may like or not like me, i litterally don' care anymore but PLEASE give it a rest.

I'm going to be a tad supportive - I 'sort of' understand where you're coming from; public gib, you thank the creator and get to enjoy the game and end up being blacklisted.. I see your point.

On the other hand, as many said, people blacklist other for all kinds of reasons (incl. myself who got hundreds of ppl on blacklist) and creator's argumenting seems fair too - there's a large number of people who give away certain amount of dubious games to build up their level and then end up being 'leeches' or the other point too - what's the point of being whitelisted when whitelisting person does not create WL giveaway from time to time so that love is returned in some way? Because otherwise, it's just a +1 to some irrelevant statistic similarly to people getting their +1s for their libraries.

Probably best to move on and not to tread on this too much.

I don't really see the point of this thread.

Perspective: You got a FREE GAME from the guy, during a time in your life when you're experiencing "prosperity problems", the guy decides he doesn't want to give you any more free games, and you create a thread about it? Really, how did you expect the guy to reply to you after all this hub-bub over a blacklisting? You've named/shamed him. I'd be annoyed as well.

I'd suggest closing the thread and moving on. This isn't a pretty color on you.

The order of events is not right. I got blacklisted for winning a game and for no apparent reason (eg. foul play), I created the topic because i couldn't think of a reason. The creator appeared and wrote his point of view which I find a tad ridiculous but it's his right to do and say whatever he pleases.

I'm annoyed too, for being blackisted for winning a game, while thanking him politely, and playing the game RIGHT the moment I won.

I'd suggest closing the thread and moving on. This isn't a pretty color on you.
You might be right about that. Yet, I'm not used to mute people.

Here's my proposal: I have been giving away random games, either publicly or in Steam groups, for about a first year spent on this site, and then automatically whitelist those who mark it as "Received" within 48 hours.

Afterwards, I started to limit giveaways for the most valuable and/or best reviewed games to my whitelist group if I don't create an occasional invite-only train.

I seem to be practically the opposite of this guy, albeit being rather exclusive about it.

Guys I'm really sorry for muting the voices, but I'll take Tzaar's advice and close the topic.

Since the giveaway creator replied but then retracted his interest in seconding his initial claims, the topic would only cause more drama without any helpful reasoning from any side, granted that I'm not anymore willing to patiently listen to personal insults just to keep the topic on track.

Thank you all for participating.
