As title say. Last few days tf2 and dota keys price dropped significantly on the market. Any explanations why?

People finally realized how stupid it is to spend money on digital keys to open digital crates to get digital items? (Digital = fake, non existent)

1 decade ago

And yet money has value despite it being either numbers on paper or numbers in a bank's database.

Digital games too for that matter.

Comment has been collapsed.

You give it a value. That's how currencies work, you know. At least you can use keys for something in contrast to actual paper money.

And yet bitcoin is something digital that no one understands and has a value of 650$. I see why would tf2 keys drop, some even predict that people will stop playing it in 2 years. but dota too? Or is it some sale upcoming that i don't know ?

TF2 keys, as opposed to bitcoin, are money, so it makes sense they'd have some value. You can buy things with them, even if virtual things, while it's impossible to buy anything directly with bitcoin without converting it to another currency.

Comment has been collapsed.

There are some people/businesses that directly accept bitcoin. Granted because the value fluctuates so much, so do the prices.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yep, and i do buy and sell things directly with bitcoins, without need to convert it to real money. And even im going to implement bitcoin payment on my site too.

1 decade ago
Permalink

I think what you're talking about is BitPay and the like, which convert bitcoin to dollars at buy time. I don't call that "directly accept bitcoin". Do you have any examples of actually buying directly in bitcoin? That price directly in bitcoin and not dollars?

No one is buying these to open crates.

1 decade ago

Are you sure? Got a friend that opened 400 crates some weeks ago... People open crates for unusuals, if you have luck, you can win much money...

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, the proverbial "no one", of course some do, but most of them seems to be for currency.

1 decade ago

you'll most likely spend more money on keys than you'll get back from unusual

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, I think the same, but it is clear that many people open boxes every day and many more when a new event occurs with new boxes and new keys. People try luck....

¿Fake? Sure... There are people making hundreds of dollars per month selling keys for paypal... (Games / Unusuals / keys / TF2 Economy...)

tf had a 2 but dota didn't and 2 + 1 = 3 thus HL3 confirmed.

if you check better, http://blog.dota2.com/?l=english dota is actually #2 so bad joke about hl3 :)

When 16 year old kids dictate a market this is what happens. Remember when keys were 70cents - $1.00 a pop or 1 key for 1.33- 2 ref?

I saw this coming a while back.. I cashed out, made 1600 bucks from a initial 200 dollar investment. It bought me a sweet new rig. Left TF2 and never looked back.. Tf2 trading is 90% kids, 10% legit traders. To much effort to play tf2 economics.

The price ceiling is how much it costs to buy a key in the mannco store.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

the .70-1 was back when tf2 keys were on sale 1/2 off. Not to mention black market sellers who would back charge after buying hundreds of keys, then sell them for paypal, ripping people off but still affecting stuff. Ref prices were proper for back then, more bots than ever right now.

Easy to explain. Game sellers are selling games for keys, then selling keys on market to win money to buy games again(of course with profit). When much game sellers are selling keys at same time (more sellers than buyers), then price drop. Is always the same on sales. You will see this more increased on big sales like summer. Always happend the same, is normal. Supply vs Demand

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I understand that, i watched it happening in summer sale, winter sale, haloween sale, but never in middle of nothing, like right now. it must be that these weekly sales are so good.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, the the recent weekly sales and weekend deals were very good and on top of that you should take into consideration the fact that Valve decided to allow all Steamworks developers to launch sales whenever they want, without the need for approval from them. So yeah... very many, constant sales, some for very good games and some 90% discounts that made terrible games tempting for most people, this is why key prices have dropped.

It's not just keys that fell in price tho. It's abnormal.
Look at dota items all of them have a downward curve at the same time, it's very odd. Did they combine the US market with the asian one or allow new countries to sell?

1 decade ago
Permalink

hmm, that might explain maybe things a bit. I have friend with who i trade games all the time and at the point when dota2 keys was at highest (recently before this huge drop they were like 2.4$) he/she was getting dota2 keys from "local" trader for like 1.6$.

Still, keys need to be bought from game, doesn't that make people lose money?

That was when keys were released. Now so many in supply that it has become the normal price.

1 decade ago

When keys were released, I think people were using the keys to open crates, rather than trading them, like they do now...

indeed very odd without some major sale going on

CS:GO sale is probably what's keeping it down right now. Quite a number of traders are hoarding a ton of copies of CS:GO (20+), which in turn means a lot more keys are being flooded on the market as the buy on demand folks need to sell off the keys they get to acquire more wallet to buy more games.

Sourceop recently "closed" their trading forum...might that have something to do with the price drop? A lot of key sellers have shops in Sourceop; it was where I found keys to buy outside of the occasional ST thread.

Any reason why Dota keys felt back to 1,46€ while TF2 keys are a bit above 1,60€? Is there an event or something going on?

I have some Steam Wallet left to transfer into keys, but I honestly started worrying if they'll ever go back to their normal price.
