I can't really help with any well-known legit charities, but... if you can't find a good one to donate to, you could try a local animal shelter, which is what I did.

I can't help with type of charity you're after, but I can suggest using Charity Navigator. They rate charities based on how much of the money they raise goes to their cause, transparency and outcomes of their projects.

When in doubt, UNICEF.

I personally have mine set to the local children's hospital since I have kids and it doesn't seem like hospitals do much campaigning for funds.
