Yea, noticed these comments in the april choice thread. They keep sinking lower. I'm staying away from buying their bundles from now on. Will only grab singular games from their bundles through other means. Sadly that means no leftovers for giveaways. Won't buy on their store either anymore. As liitle money from my pockets to theirs as possible.

Crazy to think how great Humble once was.

That's completely eff'ed up. Really. It feels like scamming to me. Who watches their redemption deadlines all the time? That's borderline stealing from people. I agree with milk above ^^ Not gonna support their store in any way anymore.

Also, I don't think it's legal. Especially in the EU, I can't be sure about other jurisdictions.

They probably don‘t care about jurisdiction outside of the US. And if you only mention something about them violating US laws when contacting support they immediately threaten to close your account. At least this was the case about two years ago.

pretty sure its illegal in USA to.

we would have had an agreement to reveal games based on a specified date at time of purchase, any other alteration is something you did not agree to.

might need to see if some law firm wants to do some digging for a potential class action suit, probably not enough damages yet for a law firm to be interested.

You are right, it violates principles against unilateral detrimental changes to existing agreements, which both parties agreed upon during purchase.

That's not "borderline" stealing. It's stealing plain and simple. And it's illegal at least in Europe, most likely in other countries too
They have already trampled upon EU customer protection laws at the very least many times so why not once more?
A seller cannot unilaterally modify a contract or the terms of a sale after the sale. But they take their chances and they are reselling keys.

By the way the keys they disable the reveal button for are valid after the supposed deadline. That in and of itself is also stealing.

Keys even if it says "expire" it won't because for that the publisher must do it contacting Steam and I think it's something a bit messy to do, and they already got paid for that number of keys they send to Humble after an agreement most likely, so they won turn unusuable. . This is Humble just hidding the key because they are greedy.

I hope EU customer protection fucks them because they deserve it.

Well I have filed a complaint with the EU customer protection agency and if they receive others, they might look into it.
Steam has already been sued for their terms and conditions and to be honest they were nothing compared to what Humble is doing

Isn't it also possible that Humble started buying keys w/ expiration dates in exchange for a higher bulk discount?
That wouldn't explain shortening the expiration date though - that MUST be greed

is this $3 the wallet thingy humble has? and does it mean you can't claim the key? i still want to claim the key since it is one of the reasons why i bought that bundle, i am just disappointed since they just changed the keys (when i wanted to activate it before 1 year has passed, the key ran out). might do it to another key that was also run out of stock at the moment, though.

yeah, it's basically store credit

I was still able to redeem the epic/gog version of the key, but it was essentially them admitting "we will never restock this steam key, here's $3 to shut up about it"

so yeah, kinda sucks if you actually want the game, but if it's a game you were planning on giving away, it sorta makes up for it

That's 100% not legal. I know it's not legal in EU because I have checked out these customer protection laws but I'm certain there are equivalent laws in other countries that prevent at the very least a seller from changing the terms of a sale after the sale has concluded.

If it hits me they will have contact from the EU consumer protection and if needed i hire a lawyer and show them where they can stick their changes if they happen after a purchase.
Because it is clearly against EU laws and each toddler know it.

It starts to change the friendly Masafor to the not so friendly one, in the case of this company.

They really get worse with each day. Sad to see.

You won't though - a lawyer would cost way to much if then would even take on a case like this

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It give specialized lawyers for media stuff. A few very known and good ones in germany too.

Yes a lawyer would cost money, that is the reason why i would go first with the EU consumer protection that should handle the situation without expenses.
But if needed i pay a lawyer and create a first case for HB that all after me can take as reference, which means HB would lose all cases afterwards too, at least in the EU, because the customers could come up with the first case.
I am sure HB don't want to risk this, and don't enforce their bullshit, but if needed it's the way i would go.

As each one very well know, i hate cheaters and exploiting/abuse, and HB clearly do this with their law breaks.

Ps.: I ended my HB choice last december, because all their shady stuff. So they lose more and more earnings from me. I think from other ones too. So it is in general a dumb idea to handle their customers the way they do since 2(?) years.

If they keep eroding away the trust of their customers eventually they'll run out of customers. I personally haven't bought from them for maybe a year at this point and with how dire the prospect of them randomly screwing me over a purchase is I don't think I'll ever buy from them again, we all knew that things were going to go downhill after they got bought but this is way too scummy.

I either redeem or gift all my Humble keys when I get them, so this change completely misses me.

I am interested to see if the presumed illegality everybody cites will clash with everyone's tacit agreement to accept DRM and a lack of actual ownership for all the games those keys can be redeemed for. The line between actually owning the keys you buy and not actually owning the games they are redeemed for seems like a pretty big grey area.

I'm all for change that eliminates DRM though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Why would it be relevant if you really own the games you have on Steam, if the topic is another company swindling by retroactively changing some very relevant details without even notifying their customers?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I feel like I said why. The thing you receive from those licenses isn't truly owned by you. One could infer that the same would be considered true of the keys which provide those license leases. I understand you're upset about the retroactive redemption date change, but as I said above, I am more interested in how this might interact with the systemic issues in the industry as a whole. Given as how it's a small part of a larger issue, which is that you're only ever leasing the things you "buy". Other than from GOG.

It's not a stretch to think that a company selling licenses might argue that DRM exceptions apply to them as well. But also, it's not a stretch to think that someone fighting DRM could use the limited time key purchases as an example of the extended reach of DRM as part of why DRM should be outlawed.

If you really chew on it, you're buying a temporary key for a temporary game license (unless you're buying a GOG key of course). It feels like that entire process is flawed.

In truth, I doubt anybody is going to take on the mantle of actually pursuing the temporary key purchases as a legal matter with all the costs that would incur, be it a person or a governmental agency, and irrespective of retroactive changes to the redemption dates as long as the company is giving you a reasonable period of time to redeem said keys (and reasonable is definitely subjective); but I can see how a person or entity would do so as part of a bigger lawsuit regarding the shady practices that envelop the industry in general. I could be wrong of course.

Btw, according to Arben's notes below, they actually extended the redemption period for a couple games s/he purchased. Bright Memory Infinite and Cat Quest 3. That seems weird. Have you looked at yours?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I still don't get why you hang on the "philosophical" debate if licensed games are truly owned. It's irrelevant.
What customers buy without the slightest doubt, is a license. And just like for anything you purchase, it's illegal to retroactively change elementary basics that enable you access to your property. Even if this "property" is just a flawed license itself and not an actual game ownership.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What I said is it has no specific impact on me personally, and I'm more interested in the bigger picture. That doesn't dismiss how you feel. You're justified in feeling however you feel. But how you feel doesn't mean I'm wrong, either.

I really don't see how this is vague or mysterious. It's not a debate. I simply stated that I'm interested in seeing how the symptom is applied to the larger issue it's a symptom of.

Did you happen to check and see if some of your licenses were extended, as per Arben's comment?

Yeah, I guess I misinterpreted the meaning of your original post anyway. Sorry, currently got my head full with a lot of very unnecessary nuisances. With Humble being the cherry on the top. ;)

Thanks. Learning that a key that I marked as expiring in late 2026 is now going to expire in 4 days is quite concerning though (Etrian Odyssey in Humble November 2025 went from an expiry date of December 2 2026 to May 4 2026 which is 4 days left, without any notice). I only know because of your post here so that means many people don't even know.

How am I suppose to even keep track of this if they can theoretical just make a key expirable the next day on a random day without any notice. Digiphile keys have expiration, but they are giving me email warning and the expire dates are very clearly based on your date of purchase. They are generally shorter than Humble expire dates but at least I can rely on them.
