Don't leave, I'm not here to troll you.

Gametap has had Skyrim on sale for 10% off for a while now (so has GMG). Since Gametap's sale was going on into January, I decided that I would just wait to see if Steam could beat 10% off. And then today I checked Gametap on a whim and imagine my surprise when I saw that Steam didn't need to beat their sale, they beat their own sale!

And so, I present the wonder of Skyrim, 20% off!

Note: Although this is Gametap, it is through their Download To Own service, so you don't need a paid account in order to buy and play this. Getting Skyrim through Gametap will be exactly like getting it through Gamersgate or GMG if you've ever used either of those sites.

EDIT: Although I personally trust this site, if you are unfamiliar with the service then treat it like you would any other download-based website that you haven't dealt with yet.

Oh, nice little discount! I will patiently wait for the new years sale, though.

I'll wait when it is a daily deal.

Almost $15 off such a popular new game, and all the comments amount to "Eh, I'll wait".

Are you people just being really stingy (it's unlikely to go for more than 33% off anytime soon I reckon, that's only saving like $6 more) or is there a problem with this company?

as far as I can tell they just email you a retail code you activate on Steam.

I'd like to know if this is trustworthy; I've never used Gametap before.

But it's about that price in UK retail shops... Not really a bargin.

Personally, I don't like paying more than $40 on digital games. Also, I can wait a bit and even if the Steam sale only saves me a few bucks more, those bucks can be used to purchase other games.

My issue is timing more than price - I'm willing to foot a few bucks extra up-front to play Skyrim during finals week next week (counterintuitively, I have almost nothing to do in finals week and almost a week's worth of free time) rather than get it God-knows-when during the Christmas break and thus have less time to play it before next semester's classes start.

All I want to know is if there's any reason I shouldn't give Gametap my debit card info. right now (i.e. history of giving bad codes or something)

There has been no issues that I know off, but then again, I don't know much about GameTap, so that's why I prefer not to say anything. They have been around for a couple of years, though, so I think there wouldn't be any trouble.

I've never heard of any problems with their download to own, but the site's been around for a while and they've always been a reliable company in my experience.

THANK YOU FOR LETTING US KNOW, OP.
I hope that makes up for the responses of "meh".

I definitely understand that people may want to wait to see if Steam will have it on sale. It's not like I feel insulted that some people aren't particularly interested in this, I was simply providing the information and people are free to do what they want with it.

P.S. Thanks for the enthusiasm. Your reward is a Kirby Dance Party <(''<) <( '' )> (>'')>.

Wow, Gametap is certainly not getting my business in the future.

First, Paypal doesn't work on their site at all on either Firefox or Chrome.

Secondly, after putting in my debit card information and clicking confirm, I get dumped back to the home page, with no confirmation of my order, nothing appearing in my billing history and (thankfully) no order showing up in my bank records.

Their entire tech support site (it's an external site) seems to be down. I can't load either their submit-a-question page or their stock FAQ pages.

Even if it's the best price I've seen, I'm only willing to waste so much time trying to give you my money - make it too difficult and I'll just buy it elsewhere.

Except now I have to wait a while before buying it somewhere else to make sure the order doesn't come in delayed or something - thanks for hassling me, GameTap! You sure know how to impress a potential customer. When and/or if their tech support site ever quits giving me 404 errors I'm looking up how to remove my account ASAP.

The rest of you, be warned. You may want to just hold off after all. It's only a few bucks' discount from other sites, it's not worth the hassle if your experience is like mine.

Hmm, fair enough. If you had issues with it then I don't want to try to push the service. Like I said, the site's been around a while, and I used to use it quite a bit when they still had a free section for their traditional subscription-based membership, so I've always held them at a level pretty much on par with the other non-Steam download sites. However, I personally haven't used the download to own section but I also haven't heard of them having any major issues in the past.

As for the support site being down, it appears to be working fine for me and I may not have experience using their download to own section, I do know that Gametap has tended to have fairly good customer service in the past.

Oh, I know you're not trying to push any company on us - in fact, I'm grateful you pointed out the sale even though it didn't work for me. I'm unwilling to try again both because I'm angry and because I don't suddenly want 3-4 attempts to get billed at once and give me NSF charges.

Still, it's not your fault. And thank you!

After searching the forum, it looks like you may be experiencing a somewhat common problem.

This should usually take no more than an hour but sometimes particularly with the more popular games they can take a bit more time as these games are on the risk list for potential fraudsters.
In the unlikely event that it takes more than 8 hours please contact our support team

With any luck, you may simply be experiencing a delay due to the popularity of the game (especially since they just recently started the sale), and the time of day you placed your order (Your key will be verified much quicker if you place your order during the day (Paris, France local time) as this is where the team is based. Between 10am and 8pm).

Is it common for them to in no way confirm the order, put anything in the billing history, or notify my bank?

if so, wow, that's kind of irritating - it'd literally be faster to walk or bike to Wal-Mart and buy it in cash.

I thought the whole point of digital distribution was that it was fast and convenient and open 24/7!

I'll hope that's the case though, but even if it is, that doesn't excuse not having some kind of screen confirming the purchase attempt, explaining this, or even saying "Yes, this site is working properly, thank you."

Yeah, the fact that you got no confirmation screen does sound weird. I'd test it myself, but I won't have any money available until the weekend. If there's no news by then (which would be really bad considering the fact that they claim it shouldn't take more than 8 hours), I'll still be personally testing it out to verify if it's a common issue, or just an isolated incident.

I think one of the UK store is selling it at 20 pounds if I am not wrong.
If you are Brit, you might want to try a UK store.

Green Man Gaming has the UK Version for £30.97, which appears to be roughly the same as the Gametap sale. Unfortunately, it's not actually available for purchase in any other region besides US on GMG.

I personally live in the US and typically only look at the US versions of games (which is a shame because often times it seems to be more expensive in the US). I know that the best deal so far was on Black Friday where you could have gotten the Russian version of the game for roughly $20, but of course then you have to deal with having the wrong regional version of the game.

I think they do international shipping or you can find a Brit to help you out.

Thanks for pointing this out. It does look like a pretty good deal, too bad it's out of stock right now though. I'm not particularly interested since I usually only buy the US versions (nothing against other countries, it's just a personal preference), but potentially a good opportunity for anyone willing to look into it for themselves.
