Yes if you want to play a full 32v32 game then you should buy the bf4+premium. Imo, titanfall only have few players atm that's why they offered 48hours free gametime recently.

BF4 is still doing pretty good and is still quite alive. I can't talk in Titanfall's name though.

As for BF4, there's a website that claims they have an api to track current players online

BF4 has a LOT of ---->full<---- vanilla servers(64/48/32 players) and that's just in EU region. I even have to wait in queue to get into servers. So no, you don't need expansions to play.
