i was just catching up on gen v the other day and watched the trailer for this! i was only 6 years old when he died, but i remember watching him in movies as a little kid, especially planes, trains, and automobiles. had that sucker on vhs and it was one of my most watched movies back then.

I’m a couple years older and planes trains was my family’s favorite, but I can’t remember it at all, I just have a deep impression of him from any of the other movies he did that my folks let me watch. I just asked my mom and my step dad, who I didn’t know while John Candy was with us, my stepdad remembers him but my mom doesn’t, which is so interesting because he was one of my true heroes as a child and 35 years ago I probably had whole conversations about him with her and my ma has gotta be sitting there going “This short, talkative idiot I’ve created actually likes SPACEBALLS more than Star Trek. How the hell did that spring out of me into this mortal coil?”

I will definitely be watching that at some point. I was just out of college when he died. I heard the news on the radio while driving and then drove straight to Blockbuster. I think I rented Trains, Planes and Automobiles... it could have been Uncle Buck...
Anyway, he was great. Just a few months ago I introduced my kids to him via Cool Runnings, and then on vacation we lucked into a DVD of Space Balls at the Air B&B where we stayed.
Who's Harry Crumb? is a favorite of mine, too.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been wanting to watch the documentary even since they started promoting it on late night talk shows.
At 30 minutes in, I was convinced I should next watch all the SCTV I've missed out on but have been hearing about for years and glad for all the movies I've already seen especially Uncle Buck.
In the end, the realness and emotional rollercoaster shared made it all the more enjoyable.

The personal struggles is a strong contender, but then i saw John Candy, which is the obvious choice

I idolized him growing up and I can't think of any celebrity deaths I cared about before his. Spoiler for the first line of the movie: The film opens up with Bill Murray, who I love even though I'm aware of allegations, saying "I don't think I know what vulnerable means."
Sorry if the topic is a dupe or should be in a movies thread I'm not previously aware of.
