This breaks my heart, I wish I could e-mail him and tell him that Star Trek was a Sisyphean assignment that he excelled in, while Space Balls or any Mel Brooks movie is basically a 90-minute onslaught of lines that are the only things most actors will ever be remembered for.

i was just catching up on gen v the other day and watched the trailer for this! i was only 6 years old when he died, but i remember watching him in movies as a little kid, especially planes, trains, and automobiles. had that sucker on vhs and it was one of my most watched movies back then.

I’m a couple years older and planes trains was my family’s favorite, but I can’t remember it at all, I just have a deep impression of him from any of the other movies he did that my folks let me watch. I just asked my mom and my step dad, who I didn’t know while John Candy was with us, my stepdad remembers him but my mom doesn’t, which is so interesting because he was one of my true heroes as a child and 35 years ago I probably had whole conversations about him with her and my ma has gotta be sitting there going “This short, talkative idiot I’ve created actually likes SPACEBALLS more than Star Trek. How the hell did that spring out of me into this mortal coil?”

Wait how's this a GA?
I might remember him but im not sure if ive seen anything he was in, sad though

I will definitely be watching that at some point. I was just out of college when he died. I heard the news on the radio while driving and then drove straight to Blockbuster. I think I rented Trains, Planes and Automobiles... it could have been Uncle Buck...
Anyway, he was great. Just a few months ago I introduced my kids to him via Cool Runnings, and then on vacation we lucked into a DVD of Space Balls at the Air B&B where we stayed.
Who's Harry Crumb? is a favorite of mine, too.

Thanks for the reminder. I've been wanting to watch the documentary even since they started promoting it on late night talk shows.
At 30 minutes in, I was convinced I should next watch all the SCTV I've missed out on but have been hearing about for years and glad for all the movies I've already seen especially Uncle Buck.
In the end, the realness and emotional rollercoaster shared made it all the more enjoyable.

What other SCTV is there? I can only think of stuff like Kids in the Hall and SNL that shared improv graduates, I'm pretty uneducated with Second City for as much as I love going there.
I watch Planes, Trains last night and will prob do Uncle Buck tonight

Sorry. I didn't make it clear enough that had missed out on all of it and had never seen an episode. SCTV wasn't in syndication on the handful of broadcast stations I grew up on, and we only had basic cable when my parents finally got it.
In recent years, I've heard of SCTV from interviews of comedians and of how many now famous comedians came out of it.
For now, I'm making do with what I can find on YouTube, but I would like to find some more quality sources.
Last year, I watched Planes Trains and Automobiles and appreciated it much more as an adult than when I was a kid. Uncle Buck stuck with me as a kid and comes to mind first, since it reminded me of uncles and "uncles" of the family who were characters in their own right and caring.
I was looking at John Candy's IMDB and was wonderfully surprised he was a voice actor in Heavy Metal.

The personal struggles is a strong contender, but then i saw John Candy, which is the obvious choice

For me the gaming handheld has made a difference. I know I coulda used the Switch this way, but for me the Switch was for couch coop when my wife used to play with me before we fought all the time. Now I just have a hug steam library and I pull up the Ally and launch XB or Steam and just watch youtube or streaming apps for hours on the big screen.... my days are filled with emotional paralysis instead of things :)

I idolized him growing up and I can't think of any celebrity deaths I cared about before his. Spoiler for the first line of the movie: The film opens up with Bill Murray, who I love even though I'm aware of allegations, saying "I don't think I know what vulnerable means."
Sorry if the topic is a dupe or should be in a movies thread I'm not previously aware of.
