Dynamic IP Address

Hi!

I'm new to SteamGifts. I've read FAQ and I saw "One Steamgifts account per IP Address" thingy. The problem is, I'm using ADSL connection with dynamic IP. So, the address I have today, tomorrow might belong to someone else using the same internet service provider in my area, and another one on the day after tomorrow. Will everything be OK, or should I contact admins?

Don't worry about it. I have been here for more than a year with a dynamic IP and nothing has happened so far.

WRONG!!!!! I got a permanent suspension because me and my brother share the same network and we have different accounts. But since we where on the same network; we also shared the IP. But the admins though I had TWO accounts because mine and my brother's where both on Steamgifts. Luckily I got it all sorted out with the admins :D.

That's a different situation than the OP and the person you replied to are discussing. You are talking about two people sharing one IP they are talking about one person having multiple different IPs over time.

Oh; then it's ok OP.l I'm actually using a dynamic IP right now and I haven't encountered a problem.

Don't worry, your Steamgifts account is tied to your Steam account. I think there's no problem.

I think you're confusing "1 account per IP" with "1 IP per account". You're fine as long as you don't make multiple accounts =)

Ok, thanks to you guys.

I've another question - what about Humble Bundle gifts? Can you gift whole bundles or single keys? I've read several topics about that on the web, some old and some more recent, with conflicting statements. What's the current bundle policy?

Yes, you can gift both whole bundles and single keys, but giving single keys can only raise your contributor value up to $30.
Take a look at the create giveaway page. If the game/bundle is there you can gift it through a giveaway, otherwise you'll have to use other ways (like just droping keys on the forum) and you will not receive any contributor value.

If you ever really need a static ip for something, you can force your box to use a static ip. Easiest way of having a static ip.

Yeah, and then your ISP reallocates the ip you forced to another box. Leaving 2 times that ip online. That is some great advice to give (not really of course).

? the ip you have now, you just keep it... and your ISP won't reallocate it anymore...

It's this or using a given proxy/vpn or if it's an old ip of yours and you know it somehow you spoof it...

Yes, you will keep it, but that doesn't stop the ISP from giving out that specific IP to someone else. In which you are creating a possible IP conflict.

Maybe some ISP's have methods to prevent this. But think of it this way, if your first computer gets it's IP automatically from your router, and you set exactly the same IP manually on your second computer, you created an IP conflict. Similar thing can happen with your 'box' (I am assuming you mean modem by that).

Never heard about it, as far as i know if you set your modem ( you assume right, nobody calls a modem a modem where i am rofl ) to have a static ip, it keeps the one it has and the provider will not give it to anybody else.

I must admit, I don't know how it exactly is, but I worked at a helpdesk of an ISP, and sometimes we had people who set it themselves, but our system would say the modem should have another IP, so that MIGHT get IP conflicts, so we had to pursue that person into stopping the use of the static ip.

But yeah, that was the side I could see, off course I didn't work the back end, so I don't know if there was any system actuallt preventing giving out IP's which where 'registered' within the network. But that seems undoable to me (if you would power off that modem for over 24 hours, the system would not be able to see it, so keeping an up to date list of that, while you have something like DHCP seems a useless pain in the ass). But I feel like we are heading a little off topic here. ^^
