Do you think it's a good idea?
Do you think it's a good idea?
Theoretical, maybe a YES.
Practical a NO.
Playtime and achievements can be cheated with programs.
It takes a lot of time to check it AND if someone don't do it the stupid way, you can't detect it in many cases.
With that possibility is clear that a good bunch of cheaters are in such "play your win" events.
That is, sadly, the reality at sg.

Aw that's very sad to hear, but I get it. I don't understand why people would even bother cheating, just so they can have +1 game in their library? Or for trading cards? I don't know, it just seems weird. Anyways, in the end I guess it would be better not to do it in this case, the votes seem to be much more in that direction too. Thank you so much for your opinion on this!

Even though I agree with Masafor that it could attract some cheaters and that verifying winners might be challenging, I still think it’s worth trying if you like the idea. In the worst case, nothing changes.
Just like in real life, there will always be people who try to game the system. You can reduce it with rules, but you can’t eliminate it entirely. In the end, it’s still up to the gifters whether they want to gift a game to someone or not.
On a side note, public votes aren’t always representative. I live in Warsaw. If 150 years ago the city had simply followed what most people wanted, we probably wouldn’t have a sewage system today 😄 That’s actually a true story.
That being said, it would likely require a lot of work, planning and determination – especially when it comes to remembering, checking and enforcing the rules, for example verifying whether the game was actually played. I think that might be the hardest part, unless there are scripts, bots or volunteers who could help with it.
Anyway, that’s just my opinion.

Thank you for that! I do agree that there will always be cheaters which is why we can't really have nice things, but I really liked the idea. I just hope it doesn't take away from the Christmas event, I really don't want to ruin it because it's a special one imo. As for reinforcing, there would have to be a script I could easily use since I'm not good at programming at all so I wouldn't be able to make one myself. I'm still quite unsure whether I should proceed or not, but I'm going to say this again: if someone else, perhaps a way more experienced person, would like to do this, then you definitely can and I can help more so on the manual side of things (or whatever side of things as long as you can teach me!).

This is a pretty cool idea! But if you want to do something like this you'd rather create a group and have your own rules and ways to get proof and verify things, else unfortunately you will be utterly disappointed by people who will cheat their way through this, or just not respect the rules at all in order to get a +1 on their library :(

You're right, I'd have to make a group (most likely on Steam as opposed to SG because people wouldn't actually host any giveaways on SG, they would just give out keys to people) and preferably have a website (just like the monthly event where you play a win/game from your backlog) where people could register what games they want, others could send them a key via the website, that kind of thing. However, I have 0 knowledge regarding creating such a thing and it seems that people don't quite like the idea so I'm leaning more towards not doing it unless someone with good experience would partner up with me.

It's better to do it via groups, there's already Playing Appreciated and other groups, so I don't think this is needed.
Also question for you as you asked this, why not join taleplay and/or Playing Appreciated yourself? You can always enter for those you would play.
Comment has been collapsed.
True, but in that case you join giveaways for the games you want and maybe those games don't even appear that often in the group. When it comes to my idea, you request games and hopefully get one.
I've been thinking of joining the one that requires you to play the win in 3 months, yes, I have to get around to trying to join it! The others only offer 1 month and that seems a bit too stressful for me. That's why, if I were to implement my idea, I'd like to offer people plenty of time to play so they don't feel pressured, especially if the game they got is long.

Whaat? But I want a cookie, pleaase?!
I've definitely been thinking about joining that group, mostly for shorter games since the one month requirement to play the win seems a bit stressful for me if the game is long. Thank you for the reminder that I should join! :)

Hey!! I'm quite happy you like my idea, I will not comment on possibilities or ideas because I may be biased to draw it near to what I do already, but if you want to take something from it or if you want help from someone, my DMs are open :D

Thank you for that! And yess, I love your event! :) I'm unsure if I should try doing it as of now, but will contact you if needed! I'm definitely curious regarding how you check that people play their wins.

As someone who loves all those event threads and is a member of every "Playing Your Wins" groups that I can find, I definitely support the concept behind this! However, I agree with the other users that this is probably going to be easier to handle via a group. Group rules could allow you to set all these additional requirements and to more easily track them. Playing Appreciated, for example, has a website to keep track of the playtime on wins. Plus, it would be considerably easier to block any rule-breakers.
It sounds like your primary inspiration is the bundled game thread that reoccurs every December. I adore that tradition, so I can see why it would inspire you. However, there would be logistical differences between a continuous event and a short-term one. You mention concerns about people winning too many games; in the OG thread, it's fairly easy for gifters to keep track because everyone is only allowed to post once and therefore you can see all the people who have already given a user a game. If the event is continuous, this would probably be harder to track. You might need to keep an updated list tracking things like how many games someone had been gifted, how many they'd played, and how many games they had gifted in turn.
If you want to go on with your idea, I'd encourage you to take up DancingXmas' offer of advice. Their Xmas Year Round event is incredible, but does seem like it must be a logistical nightmare to arrange. I'm sure they'd have good advice for how to manage something like this. The mods over at PA could also probably offer advice if you wanted to take their route of an independent website to track user compliance with event/group rules.
This is a cool idea and I wish you the best of luck with it!

Thank you for that and you are right! I replied to someone else and said that yes, a Steam group and a website would be a good idea. A SG group would not be needed since people wouldn't host gws, they'd just give out keys to others. I think it's definitely a lot of work and I don't have the knowledge to do such things I'm afraid, that's why I'm leaning towards no for now, but if someone knowledgeable would want to do it or partner up then I definitely wouldn't mind that!

Ah that sounds awful, I'm really sorry to hear that! Do you have the knowledge for doing this? Like creating a website to track that people play their wins, maybe having them use a script? We could perhaps partner up if you're interested! I'm afraid I don't have any technical knowledge to offer, but I could think about the rules, sections of the website, and so on. It's alright if your answer is no, just thought I'd try asking!

I really like your idea! I've read it when you just posted it and kept thinking about it the whole day.
I agree with everything what people already said and it seems like it will be a headache to manage it, but I really don't want you to give up on this idea. I feel like there should be a way to make it more manageable, I just don't know how yet. :D
Maybe you should look more into what PAGYWOSG organizes every month. Or maybe just keep it 1/2/3 game(s) per person per month, so then it's 1) easier to keep track and 2) even if people cheat, well, 1 game per month won't make much of a difference.
I'd say, give it a try and see how it goes, see what goes wrong and what needs to be adjusted. Nothing will be perfect from the first try, but it might become an interesting quest :)

Thank you, glad to hear it left quite an impression on you! :) I was thinking about 1 game per month only so others have a chance as well. Also, encouraging users to gift people who didn't really get games from this gw idea as opposed to the ones who got quite a lot donated already. I'd give it a try only if I found someone knowledgeable who could create a website and such since I sadly don't possess such knowledge.

"where people can request bundled games"
I don't think this is allowed. If someone says "If anyone has x game I'd like it" then they're breaking the rules. Maybe if a user lists what they have available and offer to give it away not through a giveaway but through a message or something and people can say they'd like it if its still available, but this is already being done if a few threads I think.
As for rule enforcing, if someone doesn't play their win, how do you enforce that they can't request games anymore if this is not a group but a thread? You have no way of kicking them out of the group, but maybe you could blacklist them but it would only apply to you and whoever remembers.
What do you do when there's 2000 pages of users asking for stuff and one of the people breaking your rules changes their pfp and name and comments again now and you can't tell/remember they broke rules on page 67?

Sorry, I thought it was alright since it's similar to the Christmas event where you request games. Your idea is good too, although in that case there are groups already on SG where you can just host a giveaway and the winner has to play the game in 1 or 3 months from winning.
You and others are right when it comes to that, we would need a Steam group and a website for sure. Sadly, I don't know how to create a website myself and whether I should use a script to check that people play their wins or not, I don't have that knowledge so I would need a partner for that.

Well there is some major points if you are comparing it to the Xmas event
In the case of the bundled thread it is built in a way that it allows it (I think)
Begging. Do not ask game developers or users for keys or games, unless they are offering and searching for interested parties.
Donators are aware and consent games are being requested and I believe that is the reason why is allowed, plus rules are set to avoid abuse of this. So whichever direction you are taking with your idea, just make sure it stick with that (and the other) rule(s)

I didn't mean your Xmas event since I know it's way different, I meant the one which only happens during Christmas where you can request games. I should have been clearer about it, sorry for the confusion I created!

No no that's okay, I though they could get mixed, that's why I covered both events in my answer, the bundled thread :D

Hi! For a while now I've had this idea, it's nothing too crazy, just unsure if it would be against the rules. I was inspired by similar threads (this one and this one) and by the Christmas event thread where you run a script to find out which bundled games you've been entering the most giveaways for that year, post it and then people can give you those games if they wish to. (And, ultimately, I also thought about it since I currently really want a bundled game to play asap!)
My idea is to create a thread (or someone else could host it if they want to, doesn't necessarily have to be me, I don't mind it!) where people can request bundled games, but the catch is they must start playing the game immediately upon receiving a key from another user. They can either request one or multiple games, but they shall only receive one max. After they beat it, they can request another one and so on. I'm unsure what other rules to impose (like maybe you have to beat the game in 6 months or is that too long? I want people to have way more than enough time since life can get in the way. And what do I do if the game is infinitely replayable? And maybe another rule so you don't keep on asking for games all the time? And another rule so if you don't get a game you can repost your comment after one week?), how I'd check to see if they're actually playing the game, what the punishment for not adhering to the rules would be (not being able to request games any further would be an idea, just again quite unsure about how to reinforce that).
Do you think this could work or would it steal away from the Christmas event and make it less special in a way? What ideas for rules do you have and for checking that users abide by them? Any other feedback would be appreciated, thank you!
