You need something with a low response time, decent pixel pitch, high contrast ratio, anti-ghosting, and optionally adjustable and >23".
Response time isn't as big of a deal is people make it out to be. For a long time I used an old 1280x1024 Dell monitor that had a 16ms response time. I can't tell the difference between that and my new monitor with a 2ms response time. Keep in mind that most companies measure response time using "gray to gray." This isn't a true response time; only a close guess.
Contrast ratio is another thing that scams people. Just because a monitor has a 50,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio doesn't mean it will always be that way. What you want to look at is the static contrast ratio which will be much less. Something like 1000:1. Again, contrast ratio isn't usually noticeable in normal situations.
Anti-ghosting is something you definitely need for gaming because it reduces blur and all that stuff. Also, HDMI is absolutely terrible for gaming. If you can, go with DisplayPort or dual-link DVI. These are the best because they allow extremely large resolutions, but only DisplayPort carries sound (if you need it).
Hope this helps.

You have two options:
BenQ XL2420T for 1080p 120 hz and possible 3D gaming
Dell Ultrasharp U2412M for 1920x1200 IPS with excellent image quality
If you want a high resolution, then buy three of either monitor and use amd eyefinity or nvidia surround.

And then they go and play dodgy console ports on them anyway! >.>

No. There is no need for 120Hz when you can put the money toward a different feature and go down to 75Hz. 120Hz is nice, but there are other, more important things.
Also, if a monitor is an IPS panel that doesn't mean it's godly right off the bat. IPS panels have several bad qualities to them that TN's are infinitely better at.

Pick any monitor which is;
1920x1080, 2 ms, 120hz.That monitor you were looking at is not bad but you should pick a 2 ms one.

If you can visually tell the difference on anything lower than 10ms without comparing them side-by-side I'll be impressed.

If you use a 2 ms 120hz monitor instead of 5 ms 60hz you can easily see the ghosting difference.Not a big deal for some people, but it is kinda important if you're a hardcore gamer.

If you actually want to spend the money upgrading from 5ms to 2ms you need a reality check. There are absolutely no games out there right now that actually need that low of a response time.
The refresh rate is much more noticeable and important.
