i've been using the 8.1 preview since it's been available. after a registry edit to remove all the folders it wanted to display alongside my drives in computer view, it's almost entirely an improvement on windows 8:

  • having a button for the start screen makes it SO much easier to get to the start screen for a vm or when connecting over vnc (it's hard to hit the lower left corner when it's in a window)
  • being able to set the start screen background to your desktop wallpaper makes the transition to / from the start screen much less jarring
  • making desktop applications' start screen tiles not all the same color is a lot less ugly (though still ugly)
  • start screen search no longer only shows you programs unless you select settings after searching, so it's much easier to get to stuff like programs and features
  • two new tile size options might be nice -- i set some stuff i rarely use to the smallest size

i'm pretty sure the extra folders clutter is the only thing that got worse. i still miss desktop gadgets which i've added back in, and the ability to put commonly-used document links in the start menu which i haven't found a good way around. still with all it's bad choices, windows 8 was an improvement over windows 7 for me and 8.1 makes it a little better yet.

Nope. Cause if it wasn't for the fact I got more then 3 gigs of ram, I would not have bothered to get windows 7 and would have stuck with windows XP. It does everything I need.

Windows 8 and 8.1 does nothing I need and is a tablet OS made to work on a PC. I don't have a touch screen monitor, and as long as I have a choice to not buy them, I never will. I don't view that as a useful feature in a desktop or even laptop computer that sits on the desk or lap.

Oh and I even dislike windows 7 because it removed a few features that I liked and used in XP, and changed the way other features worked for what I can see as no reason to do that because they worked better in XP. (the way search works, the way you can't seem to set all folders to a specific view and to use that view even with new folders and stuff like that. Small but annoying things)

got it ages ago, it was early for dreamspark users.
It's useless for me since I disabled that useless UAC shit and apps won't even run when that thing is off.

Minor GUI changes, stardocks windows 8 is still much better

I got a way to make sure they can run when UAC is turned off. If you want it, let me know and I'll post it to your reply when I get back to my main computer.

This setup works for me.

  1. Get rid of metro stuff. Run powershell.exe
  2. Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers | Remove-AppxPackage
    Get-AppXProvisionedPackage -online | Remove-AppxProvisionedPackage -online
  3. Weapon of choice -> Start8 / StartIsBack / ClassicShell
  4. Run cmd.exe
    net user administrator /active:yes
  5. UAC off

Comment has been collapsed.

That's the problem with the UAC. I find the calendar app useful, but the one and only app I find useful. Since Apps WONT FUCKING RUN WHEN UAC IS TURNED OFF. Then I'm in a situation where I need to choose whether to turn on UAC or find another alternative

I don't like win8 at all but I dunno why people have to be so stuck up about those with different opinions. People who hate win 8 aren't tech challenged or whatever and people who like it aren't dumb, stop being children

Stop trying to make sense, this is the internet...

It mostly have to do with the fact that most people "hate" Windows 8 for superficial reasons, such as "absence" of a Start button.

1 decade ago

Comment has been collapsed.

It's more of the path Windows 8 has decided to take. Mainly, it can't decide whether it wants to be for tablets or it wants to be for PCs.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It wants to be both, and it's not the problem. The functionality of OS is not affected by that ambition, it's the look that's affected. Windows 8 is more secure, better at handling things, and gives more control over the system. Yet most people don't know (or care) how it works, they only care that their windows are rectangular and opaque now.

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Functionality for both is also affected.
Let's say I'm on a tablet. I shouldn't have to use the desktop at all to do some stuff.
On the other hand with a PC, I shouldn't have to use Modern to do some stuff.

Looks aren't the only thing that's affected for sure. Also, how does it give more control over the system? I would really like to know especially since quite a bunch of settings are hidden under multiple layers of Modern.

Windows 8 is cool after you customize it a lot didn't knew about update but seriously Win7 Win8 WinXp all didnt feel right to me. Vista was even worst.
If DX11 was supported on Windows 2k i would use that instead. Tryed all my current Games on Windows 2k on another partitions worked fine but not 64bit so lose 10GB of ram.
So Windows Server 2003 64bit would have been the best but those are Illegal Copies so yeah paid 40$ for win8 cant complain for once been legit.

Enterprise is only expection I think. Anyway it worked for my laptop, but not on this pc (upgrade freezes after reboot then error 0xC1900101 or something like that. Both codes are Win 8 Pro Retail.

Which error 0xC1900101 did it give you? There's quite a few stuff that general error is associated with.

Based on what I have read, you may not like the solution I will give.
Do the solution below at your own risk.

  1. Turn off all stuff like Hyper Threading and Turbo Boost in your BIOS.
  2. Back up your data.
  3. Reformat your Windows drive to GPT. The commands to do that is at the bottom of the post.
  4. Set your main HDD hardware to boot using EFI or UEFI only.
  5. Install Windows 8.1 now. Do not reformat again! If you do, good luck to you spending some more time redoing the GPT format.
  6. Enjoy using your "new" OS.

Commands to format:
diskpart (this will load the disk partition utility)
list disk (make sure you choose the root drive that you will boot from)
select disk # (where # is the number of the drive or partition)
clean (this will clean the drive/partition)
convert gpt (this will convert the hard drive to gpt format)

Do not type what is in the brackets nor the brackets themselves.

OS disk is automatically GPT for me and UEFI boot is first choice.

Very excited. It's my only hope to cure my broken Unity from Nvidia Optimus thingy. Installed it, configured it a bit and now my Unity is alive again!
For some reason Windows 8.1 was released a few hour before ubuntu. While my friends are posting Win8.1 installation on Facebook, I'm still waiting.

Installed yesterday night, by MISTAKE !!!!
The Microsoft AppStore page said you can download, and then select if you want to upgrade or not, so I said ok, download now install later (after reading some reviews). It downloaded, STARTED UPGRADE, rebooted 3 times, then showed the licence agreement with Accept/Refuse !!! At this point I can't refuse !!!

In general it is not bad, I only hated when it reverted my account from Administrator and Local only (no Live account) back to Standard User with Microsoft Live account login.

You had the chance to say no to that upgrade, but maybe waited to long? After the download is finished it shows you that you need to restart to install that update...at this point you could just not restart, deactivate the automatic restart, use shutdown -a or just delet the 8.1 update from the Update Center...
