...is crazy... who in the right mind would check that box?
That's kind of the idea. You don't create a giveaway to win a game, so checking that box would filter away anyone who has misunderstood, and give less fake giveaways.
Maybe it wouldn't work. Feel free to discuss.

It,s not crazy. It is good way to educate new ppl. There should be popup when osmeone check this box. Like with cat when you win something. But instead of cat gif there should be description like "You tried to win game by creating giveaway with it. Read FAQ !" with some gif suggesting you did something stupid.

While you have the right idea in concept.
The issue with these people is that they don't read.
Odds are they won't read the checkmark either and simply create their thing.
But who knows.
It sounds like a minor adjustment that could just catch some of them and filter them out.
The bigger issue though. How many users don't read the FAQ simply because they're not proficient at english.
Sending them to the FAQ isn't gonna help them. They'll just try again.

Seriously?
This place is not that difficult to understand... slack given to folks for whom English is not their first language.... otherwise...

Require new users to give away a bundle game before they can give away a non-bundle one. Simple and effective.

How many new users give away a non-bundled game as their first? And they wouldn't need to buy a bundle, any leftover or 5 card trade would do.
I think it would be a very small inconvenience which would eliminate 90%+ of all fake giveaways.

I would force them, yes. I see no better solution. No amount of FAQ translations or big red warnings will solve the problem.
I don't expect you to agree with me, of course.

+1 nice idea, but honestly I think the fake giveaways exist just because people want CV, not because they haven't read the FAQ (Well most of the fake ones)

I was thinking of people regifting but also of the fake giveaways in general.
They do it cause they think they can get away with it, I don't really know what goes through their mind, but that's how it is. I've talked to 2-3 people that have done fake giveaways and that was their excuse.

The third option is... Ugh... As if this website isn't leecher friendly enough. Little autodidact skills are not much to ask for. The current generation gets born with an iPad in their hands, why wouldn't they understand such simple things?
Anyways... Although I think that this would be overseen by the average fake gifter or even ignored I think it's a simple and good addition.
I've got some suggestions myself and I am still figuring everything out, thought you'd bring up a similar idea I had :D

I like the idea. I always thought that the giveaway creation screen isn't newbie-friendly even on the most basic levels. It just feels like as if it was created by a frequent user for himself, not for general use. Floating hint text, a little more explanation like yours, something other than pointing to an FAQ. Using a single FAQ page only to educate all users is like still living in 1996. It's apparent that whoever made the new web site kows how to make web pages. That knowledge should be used.

What about turning that proposed checkbox ON by default. People will have to read and understand that they need to uncheck the box to create a giveaway. Yeah, it's a little extra work for creating a giveaway, but at least people will have to actively prove that they read the form.
For anyone with more than a few giveaways (3-5 maybe?), you could hide/remove that part of the giveaway form. At that point, they clearly understand the site a little better, and don't need the extra hand-holding.
BTW, for those claiming lack of English comprehension is the problem: these users clearly understood enough English to know that the site is about game giveaways. Expecting them to read one more sentence isn't that much to ask.

Sounds too complicated imo. Make 8 buttons:
[I] [WILL] [GIVE] [THIS] [GAME] [TO] [ANOTHER] [PERSON]
And you must click them in the right order. Mistake = start again.
Just an example. There is no way a person understanding english could still think they're getting a game after this one.

I see the reasoning behind you idea, however, this is not a professional way to handle such stuff and most probably, would never be accepted as a solution by any portal. What's more, I'm afraid most of the people would just click that option all the time, finally succumbing and creating a fake giveaway anyway (because the 'I want to win' option doesn't work!).

I disagree, creating a fake option is not a good idea. People who are this stupid and lazy should be suspended and banned by their second or third fault.

So, in a recent discussion we were talking about a few fake giveaways popping up.
Fake giveaways often seem to be new users not understanding how the site works, and not taking time to read the FAQ or use common sense. The main misconception being that creating a giveaway will get them the game they created a giveaway for.
There have been different suggestions on how to stop this. Red text, popups, checkboxes with bold text "I have read the FAQ" and such. What they all have in common is more text that someone who quickly want to get their first giveaway done probably ignores.
How about something like this? (The image is at the end of the post)
If you have misunderstood how the site works, and are looking for getting a game through creating a giveaway, you will most likely check the "I want to win the game" box.
By checking the "I want to win the game", instead of creating a giveaway, the user is taken to a page containing the parts of the FAQ explaining the concept of a giveaway in extra easy/clear wording, plus a list of all current giveaways to join for a chance to win games and together with the brief, simple to understand explanation about that they're supposed to enter giveaways to win, not create they hopefully get the concept. An extra big link to the FAQ can be on the same page.
The extra clear wording on the gift/key description maybe also stops the fake giveaways where a new user who doesn't read the FAQ thinks they can give away a game redeemed to their Steam account. You could perhaps also make this extra clear with screenshots of a redeemed game in the library and a gift item in the inventory, "You can give away this one, but not this one" or something like that.
This should only visible until the first successful giveaway is done. After that the user should know how the site works.
What do you say - Could this work?
