What are some things that have garnered up controversy, such as a certain movie or book, that you really love. Or maybe a video game is "too violent" yet you play it everyday.

For me, I think it would be the movie Django Unchained.

Though being legal doesn't mean it isn't frowned upon for an adult to date a kid. Even a few years can make a big difference in how people react to it. 16 and 21 pairing will get you a lot of shit, but 20 and 25 and no one blinks an eye.

No offense, but it's scary that there are people out there who don't know enough to differentiate between pedophilia and age of consent laws.

Pedos are attracted to children: Young, prepubescent, children. It's a psychological issue with severe legal and sociological ramifications, should the person try to indulge their desires at the expense of a child.

Age of consent, on the other hand, is a LEGAL distinction, and changes from place to place. I think you'd find there are a lot of very, very, normal people out there who would be very, very, offended if you called them a pedophile for being attracted to a well-developed 16-year-old, considering that is the age of consent in most of the U.S.!

(Of course, just because it's legal doesn't mean you should. Attraction to someone who is physically mature is normal, but that doesn't mean you can have a relationship with them. Everyone is different, but I think it would be hard for the average adult, from their mid-20s on up, to really connect with a 16-year-old on the same level and have a healthy relationship.)

In some states, legal AoC is 18. Does that mean if your girlfriend is 17 that you magically become a pedo when you cross state lines from, say, New York to Pennsylvania? No, that's silly. What about countries where AoC is 19 or 20?! Is it fair to call someone a pedo because their boyfriend is 17, but YOU live in a state where 18 is the legal age? No, no it most certainly is not. Furthermore, there are often legal exemptions to AoC laws if your age is close enough to your partner's. This is because there's this little thing called common sense that says, "Hey, maybe this young lady isn't a child-hungry predator who's trying to victimize her 15-year-old boyfriend, just because she's 16." Common sense is good. Sadly, it also isn't that common...

Age of consent can also change depending on whether the relationship is heterosexual or homosexual. AoC for same-sex relationships is higher in many areas. Again, this is a legal distinction, not a matter of psychology.

A pedo is a pedo; even if the law changed to make their predilections legal, they would still be a pedophile! However, perfectly ordinary people CAN be in violation of AoC laws and not even remotely be a pedophile; it happens all the time.

In the U.S., you can have all the perfectly legal sex you want with a 17-year-old, but if you made pornography with that same 17-year-old, you would be in violation of child pornography laws. Again, this is a legal distinction put in place in an attempt to protect people from being victimized; it doesn't mean that, if you're dating a 17-year-old, you're a pedo if you own a camera but normal if you don't. Again, that is silly and ignorant.

It's worth noting that, sometimes, for various reasons, a person can be legally declared mentally incapable of giving consent.

Bottom Line: It is ignorant to confuse a legal distinction, like age of consent laws, with someone who is, for some unfortunate reason, attracted to prepubescent children. Age of Consent often has very little to do with whether someone is a 'child' or not. And, the reason the age changes from place to place is because there is no magical age where everyone suddenly becomes responsible, empowered, and able to make life-altering decisions with an acceptable minimum amount of competence and agency. The law simply picks a general age they think gives people the best mix of freedom and protection. Some people are NEVER responsible enough to drink alcohol, never informed enough to vote, never responsible enough to own a gun... but that's just the way it is, and there is an age in place for all of those things.

In the U.S., you can choose to join the military and possibly kill/die for your country at 17 (with your parents' consent), but you can't vote or be in porn until you're 18, can't smoke tobacco products until you're 18 or 19, and you can't drink alcohol until you're 21. These are all just best guesses at when the average person is responsible enough to participate in a given activity.

They are based on psychology, but do not reflect psychological dysfunction. There is a difference between a pyromaniac and a person who chooses to burn their home down to defraud their insurance company for a payoff. There is a difference between someone who suffers from a disorder where coprolalia (uncontrollable swearing) is a symptom, and someone who simply has a dirty mouth. There is a difference between a kleptomaniac and a burglar.

And, there is a vast difference between the psychological issues that make someone a pedophile, and the legal distinctions that determine Age of Consent law. It is ignorant to confuse the two, and there can be DIRE legal ramifications for the innocent people who are the victims of false accusations, or even the faintest hint of one.

Holy crap and yeah I know the difference between pedo and age of consent...

Why so serious, I was just telling him to be careful and not be dumb....

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Perhaps, but I can guarantee your local laws don't assert that people who violate the local Age of Consent are all automatically pedophiles. If you think that, then you are wrong. Hence the explanation.

Wanting to give someone helpful advice is fine, but could do more harm than good when couched in terms of ignorance. As for the 'why so serious?' Well, this may be a bit on the obvious side, but: Because it IS serious business. The subject matter demands seriousness. When people are being careless with explosive material, it is serious business. By that same token, when people are carelessly throwing around words that can get others thrown in jail or ruin their lives, it is also a time for serious business to step in.

Technically it is under 12 for boys, 11 for girls.
Legally, many countries have pedophilia laws that redefine that word (or use other words) for higher ages.

That does not apply or make sense to say....unless you are above 18, they are not really under your age then....

The misuse of terminology is shocking. But seeing how media uses it completely wrong too it's no surprise.

You don't "become" a pedophile just like you don't become gay. You either are or you aren't. Pedophilia is attraction to children who have not reached puberty yet. If you feel attracted to girls or boys in puberty that's perfectly normal. Now the mental state and actually pursuing such "relationship" is a different story of course, but people shouldn't feel bad for finding girls or boys who are like 16 or something attractive. Just treat it with some common sense. And please everyone stop misusing the term pedophilia, it's so annoying. As it was mentioned before, it's not the same as the age of consent. There totally is no connection between pedophilia and the age of consent for that matter.

Being veggie is less and less controversial thought as more and more studies on the subject are done and more and more information on the subject becomes known tanks to the media and internet spreading out the info.

In a lot of asian countries and in the United Kingdom being a vegetarian is a normal thing.

Funilly enough i like everything you like except the riddick movies.
