I've been on this site for almost a year, and I noticed something peculiar: unlike other forums I've been on, people seem to be okay with users advertising things like their YouTube channel or Bandcamp profile (Here's an example). At first, I thought advertising was okay on this forum, but I also noticed a few threads where developers were promoting their games, but then they were "reported for advertising" or something like that, and the threads were deleted. I couldn't find anything in the F.A.Q. about this, so I thought I'd make a thread about it.

When is it okay for users to advertise on this forum?

yes for ga-Description, no for forum

(Please note, in giveaway descriptions we do allow users and developers to link to their related Steam Greenlight, group, and store pages, as well as their social media channels. Users are also able to reference their group giveaways when posting in the Group Recruitment category of our forum.)

Are you sure? I could have sworn that there were user advertisement threads without exclusive giveaways that didn't get reported or deleted.

There were a few that got overlooked for a while, but eventually got closed.
As stated, giveaways are fine to advertise within. Otherwise, you're typically okay to advertise something special (and on-topic for the site), like a distinct sale or the launch of your game, as that's the kind of thing someone else'd likely post up anyway. Likewise, non-personal charity links appear to get a pass, and non-gaming deals are generally okay to post in Off-Topic. However, personal advertisements, advertisements indefinite in duration, and advertisements based in referral links have all been pretty strictly discouraged over the years, despite the occasional slip-through.

Note also:

that didn't get reported or deleted.

One tends to lead to the other- so if you've concerns, you may consider reporting a thread on your own. If you do an Other ticket, staff can even reply to tell you why they feel it shouldn't be deleted, if that ends up being the case.
