Just about a week ago I started to read ASOIAF books to make the wait for the next Game of Thrones season easier and Ive been enjoying it so far, but I noticed that when I read I imagine everything and play it in my mind as if it was the series: the characters, the voices, the locations even thing like temperature (I feel cold when Im in the North and warm at Essos). Its GREAT, but I also noticed that because of this I read A LOT slower, a chapter (like 5-10 pages) in 40-60 minutes.
This happens to me just when Im reading fiction, something where I need to inmerse myself, but with university books or news I read faster (as I also dont hear that little voice narrating the story).

Do you do the same while reading? Or do you prefer/only can read in one way or another? Would you like to change your pace?

Also, I think this happens to me with ASOIAF because I am reading them in english (my native language is spanish), its a little more difficult as I have to search for words in time to time, but as I see the tv show in english with subtitles, it helps to maintain the actors voice :D

I'll read word by word but when it's getting boring, I would just skim through it ...

To enjoy the book for more time.
Its like eating your food slow and enjoy it, just a matter of tastes (pun intended).

Can you visualize and imagine all the described details from a book when reading fast? If so, good for you. If not, then that's the reason. :P

I would prefer to read fast but my eyes only let me read slow.

Probably because you like to vocalize like me, to read faster, you need to learn to visualize words and link the shape to the meaning. Its a lot faster but you may mix words in time to time or dont have enough time to fully comprehend all the text.

When you say vocalize, you mean do I either read out loud or move my lips when I read? Then no I don;t do that.

More like you read it at the same pace that you would if you were narrating the story.

Ah, then still no to that. I DO, however, read to enjoy. But I have a couple of hundred of books in my apartment that I still need to read.

Depends how slow or fast we are talking about, but I generally like to take my time and immerse myself in the universe of the book, like you said.

I tend to read quite fast but slower depending on the type of material I'm reading or how many time's I've read it before.

When I read fiction, which I dont do very often, it has to be suspenseful so I usaually read fast because I want to know what will happen asap
When reading research papers and the like it depends...if its complicated and interesting it takes time and sometimes pausing and thinking...other times I skip a lot of it if Im only interested in parts of it

I'm a pretty slow reader. TBH I don't read for pleasure very often...mostly plane rides and vacations, both of which are rare.
I am a bit of an editor/grammarian type, so I'm constantly reworking sentences in my head, thinking of different/better words in a given situation, etc. Or getting distracted by typos, poor sentences, etc. I need help.
HALP!

I tend to read quite fast, but quite often, when there's a lot of things going on, I'll put down the book for 1-2 min to just process what I've just read.

Slow, very slow, I read so slow that sometimes I bore myself and just stop reading for a while, it actually buggers me that I can't finish a book for weeks. I could read faster but as you said I wouldn't be as involved in the story.

Depending on the difficulty of the novel and my mood, medium speed of fast- even the medium mean around 100 pages/hour, if the letters are big with a lot of space between lines, even 2-3 pages/minute. Usually I just have a cloudy-picture of characters in my head, like you take a puppet, imagine the most typical cloth of the character on it, imagine the adjectives swirling around it, or something like that. In my head the characters doesn't have faces, only if required and detailed (eye colour, slim face, long nose, etc), and sometimes I don't even read their names completely, just make a mental photo of how the word looks like, and linking it to the character. For me it's mostly the remembering part, when the story starts to take actual form - I absentmindedly visualize it later, while only read and store the text at reading.

It feels perfect for me, to be honest. Reading a few sentences, then just stop, to visualize it in detail, then continue it later - that's like watching a short part of a movie three times to get it perfectly. I couldn't do it without getting bored. I have really good visual memory for pictures, locations and ocasionally for texts (weirdly enough, really bad for actors and such) - I often visualize a character first after descriptions, then I just go with it - my mind kinda saves the picture, and I see it in as detail as it's required, mostly not so much.
I just don't need to see every wrinkle on someone's face - just like simple sketches can be extremely effective, I don't need to go to deep to actually build a world :) No low graphics option is included, my visualization just works without focus. As soon as I read a name, all the adjectives pour into my mind, and the empty humanoid shape immediately morphs to the character I'm reading about :3

I wish I could read fast(er), but I'm probably one of the slowest readers. I read around 30 pages per hour. It always takes me a while to get in the reading zone, at the start I can never seem to keep my focus and my mind keeps thinking about others things. Truth be told I'd rather be able to focus more than to read faster. I do tend to visualize the story in my mind, if I attempt to read faster I feel like I'm skipping too much. But I rarely read books, I think I've read less then 50 or so in my entire life.

I usually read fast but it depends on what I am reading.

I feel that some books have their own rhythm and one has to be in tune to enjoy them so I'll slow down.

Too many books to waste time on slow reading ;p But I've always had divisible attention, so for me it's no problem to play whole scene in my head while reading it at the same time ;) The only books I read slowly are ones for learning purposes, any fiction book I will read really fast.
