Especially if they can offer infinite replay value on single player

You can mention games whose replay factor is due to multiplayer as well, but please make it clear if it's the case

(replay factor = you can play it as many times you want without getting boring - even if you already finished the game)

One Way Heroics is a simple roguelike, but it's a really good simple roguelike with a lot of content.

Skyrim
Hitman series
Stardew Valley
Resident Evil series
Most 2D,3D, RPG Mario Games

Those games offer different playstyles, quests/missions/challenges, etc that make them very replayable, always challenging you to improve and master them.

Craft the World probably deserves a mention. Tower defense, crafting, strategy - it's got a bit of everything and there are probably a few different ways to play it. I could easily sink more time into it (350 hours), but I have a backlog to attend to.

It really depends on what you enjoy. Take a look at your Steam friends' games lists (sorted by hours played) for some ideas.

Some people can't get enough of casual games like Tetris, Solitaire or Minesweeper. Bejewelled 3 is a casual Match 3 game that probably falls into that category, as is Zuma's Revenge.

Creativerse is free and could keep you busy for a long time if you enjoy the Minecraft-style resource gathering, creative construction loop. Terraria is another crafting game but it has adventure elements and people seem to rack up a lot of hours in it.

Killing Floor is a co-op zombie wave FPS (it can be played alone but is better with teammates, easily found online) with a number of relatively small maps. Some people seem to find the frantic gunplay addictive.

Path of Exile is a free Action-RPG that some people hail as a successor to Diablo and sink a lot of hours into.

I like open world immersive exploration, solitude and realistic physics, so my tastes reflect that:

  • TheHunter Classic is good if you like peacefully exploring nature, slow, stealthy, realistic FPS games and solitude (there is also co-op multiplayer if you pay to become a member). Not recommended if you are impatient or don't like the idea of killing realistic virtual animals. It has over 130 square kilometres of detailed open world environments, from arctic to tropical biomes, and the animals are randomly generated (complete to each antler tine, horn and tusk) at the start of each hunt. There are frequent content updates and competitions to keep things fresh, and playing as a non-member (free) limits the animals that you can hunt - they change weekly and it would take 5 months just to be able to hunt all of the currently released animals.
  • S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is a fantastic exploration adventure FPS with horror and RPG elements (the game almost deserves its own genre but it's a bit like a scary Fallout 3 that makes survival feel difficult). Possibly the most immersively atmospheric game I have played, its longevity comes from its excellent AI and world design. NPCs and monsters go about their lives and freely interact (to the death), with or without you, making it feel like a living world that you are in, rather than an experience tailored around you, and the adventure is different each time. Quests are not ruined by NPCs dying because key information can be gathered from their PDAs when looting their corpses. Buggy on release, I recommend playing with the STALKER Complete mod and SC Realistic Weapons add-on, but there are lots of good mods for this game to change it as you would like and people are still making YouTube videos for it more than 10 years on. It's not truly infinitely replayable because there is a central quest that the adventure is based around (free roaming play is possible but not as fun for me), but it is enjoyable enough in practicality. The third game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat probably offers even more replayability with the Call of Chernobyl mod because it incorporates all locations from the trilogy, the faction war from the second game, and endless play game modes. Nevertheless, I still recommend the original, as it remains one of my favourite games of all time.
  • Mount & Blade: Warband is a game of medieval conquest, encapsulating strategic elements, such as diplomacy and war, resource management, RPG character development and combat (both hand to hand and ranged, mounted and on foot, open field and castle sieges) where you control a single character as well as issuing team battle tactics. The weapon control mechanics are quite complex (I believe more so than Kingdom Come: Deliverance), so it is satisfying to get it right. You can even get your jousting fix here. You could play the base game for a very long time without getting bored but there is also a lot of mod support to keep this fresh, from historical (e.g. feudal Japan, Roman empire, Napoleonic Europe) to fantasy (e.g. A Song of Ice & Fire/Game of Thrones).
  • The Forest is a survival horror. I like the horror aspects but the crafting/construction elements could keep you interested for a long time if that is your thing.

Except if you're super patient and persistent, i doubt there is a single player game that is not boring/repetitive after many hours. But...

  • Hack'n'slash usually offer a high replay value even after main story completed : diablo 2, titan quest, grim dawn, etc. You'll probably be bored after getting full-stuff and rarest drops.
  • Turn-based strategy games, even playing chess can be boring after some time but you'll like variations : Civilization, Offworld trading company, Sengoku Jidai, Field of glory II, Atlantic fleet, etc.
  • Real-time strategy games offer random skirmishes apart main campaign (Company of heroes) or a lot of replayability to experiment different strategies and play different factions (sometimes partly turned-based) : Total War, Rotk, Nobunaga, etc.
  • Management builders, you're just limited by your imagination to experiment : sim city, cities skylines, prison architect, etc.
  • Rogue-like can become quickly repetitive but offer sometimes well hidden secrets : Curious expedition, long journey home, etc.
  • Space games are often huge, you become bored when you've seen all biomes and build your dream empire/fleet/home : X3, Starbound, etc.
  • The division has a lot of solo/multi farming after main campaign. But farming can become boring after 100h.
  • Hitman has a high replay value, you can sink easily 100h playing escalations and challenges. But it can become boring too after that.

Sid Meier's Civilization, without a doubt.

If you never played any, I'd say the best bang/buck and ease of approach would be Civ 5.

Everyone have their favorite, some claim Civ4 was better, others say it's Civ5, and others say Civ6 is the best it got so far... I just love them all and move to the latest iteration when there's a new one every 5 years.

if you are into it: factorio

huge fun solo or with friends.
demo is on steam but with limited content obviously. still enough to give you an idea what the game is about.
i played over 200 hours in the first month and now i'm at almost 800 and still counting.
if you love building, tinkering, optimizing and all of that this is THE game for you.

  • Borderlands 2. Playing the game nets you badass ranks, which are cross character.
  • Time trial games like Super Meat Boy, Mirror's Edge, Clustertruck, Trials games and Hotline Miami.
  • Well made racing games / sims like Assetto Corsa.
  • Factorio.

+1 for Borderlands 2.

Borderlands 1 as well in my opinion.

Haven't played the PreSequel yet though so I can't say how it is to add it to the list.

Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal has hundreds of bonus levels with varying difficulties, complexity and size, plus it has the option of user-made levels, so the game is practically endless.

As funny as it sounds, I'm being serious right now - Tetris.
Also Binding of Isaac and any good Diablo-clone or just Diablo II itself.

Single player games which can stand dozens of replays:

  • the whole Final Fantasy series
  • the whole Fire Emblem series
  • Tower Defense games: Cursed Treasure, GemCraft, Protector, Infection, Kingdom Rush etc.
  • Tactical role-playing strategy games: Advance Wars (whole series), Lord of the Rings The Third Age (GBA), Final Fantasy Tactics spin-offs (all of them, PS, GBA and so on), Onimusha etc.
  • Zoo Tycoon
  • the whole PokΓ©mon main franchise, if you like them
  • Chrono Trigger
  • Riviera (probably one of the most underrated and beautiful games ever made)
  • Mario/Yoshi/Donkey Kong platformers and the kind, played for years and years

All of these are games I played tons of times, not including MMORPGs, sport games and so on.

most replay value games are strategy games, especially grand strategy games from paradox as they update and improve their games for years. Now Ck2 and EU4 has soo many patches and you can just revert to older version if you want to change the game mechanisms a lot

Tales of Maj'Eyal. There's a reason some people have over 500 hours in it. Also, there's a free version on the game's non-steam site which is almost the same as paid except for a few things.

Game randomizers like the A Link to the Past randomizer, or the Link to the Past + Super Metroid combined randomizer.

Actually there's so many randomizers now that there's a huge list here.

People can replay wathever game an infinite time because game is about personal tastes and each human feel it different, maybe 1 guy is bored about elite amiga 500 game after 1 min,and maybe another guy play the same elite amiga 500 game for 40 years of his life.
Anyway i can tell you i never get bored to play Astroneer,Elite Dangerous,No Man's Sky,Sea Of Thieves,Diluvion for long time because also if these games has not so much things to do,and also if they not have storytelling i like theyir gameplay and i always create new creative ways to play the game and do new things also if the software is not developed for do it..
Edit : Warlords also for amiga 500 is beautiful and i play it a lot of time.

I really like the batman and mordor games from WB, wish there was a way to setup a custom arena to fight endless waves of enemies. Instead you have to use the challenges or simply log into the open world and find a spot to fight.

I believe Civ 5 is a good choice as well.

Bindings of Isaac, pretty much any rogue-like game with randomly generated levels.

Any batman game actually, I really enjoyed Arkham City and the challenges in Origins.
Wish Arkham Knight had features to create custom combat challenges.

I just like to fight endless waves of enemies while listening to a custom playlist with specific songs.
