I think they said a few months ago that it will not be called BG3 (or maybe not even use the BG name at all, not sure), and it will take place between BG 1 & 2

Replying here for this since OP closed the thread

I know this is probably why jatan said to make an Other ticket, but he shouldn't have. Sleepy told us to do that too not long ago, but bobo clearly said not to do this.

ohh, this I did not know. I've seen mentioned Sleepy's comment, but I did not see this bobo's one. From now on I will keep my mouth shut then (yet still use the method for my own advantage :>).

PS you can delete links now, so ppl cannot relqate them and start doing it themselves :>

I thought "Pillars of Ethernity" was good enough to stop thinking about Baldur's Gate. Whos is going to make it? The original team? Some bethesda moneymakers?

Beamdog, who created the InfinityPlus engine for the Enhanced Editions. So at worst it'll be an indie BG, not a Bethesdafied BG. They are content with ruining Fallout.

Well its something

Oh thank god. Bethesda changes things they get their hands on far too drastically.

Well, so far they only got their hands on one thing, and that is Fallout.
Unless you mean them as a publisher. But I think most other publishers tend to do that.

I specifically meant fallout. New fallout and old fallout should be two separate franchises really.

Well, considering Bethesda's pricing policy on the old titles, they sure are treated as such.

The things I know about this (99% probability - confirmed by at least 2 sources):

  • The game will be set between BG1 and BG2
  • It will use reworked Infinity Engine (the same engine which was used in original Baldur's Gate - not even Aurora)
  • It won't migrate to D&D 3-rd edition.

The things which I couldn't confirm (70% probability):

  • The game will be slightly smaller than original Baldur's Gate, with about 15-20 hours main storyline and up to 30 hours of sidequests.
  • It will reuse most of the "generic" game assets (character sprites, sound and visual spell effects, ambient noises, possibly some of the NPC portraits) from BG1 and BG2. New will be backgrounds, recorded dialogues etc.
  • Entire script is new, and it is fully created by team working on BG 1.5 (Or PreSequel as zelghadis called this)
  • There are less than 10 people working on this which were working on any of the original Baldur's Gates.
  • Baldur's Gate 3 is in pre-production. It's development depends on BG PreSequel sales. It will be based on early draft of the script created by original BG team.

I don't want to get too excited, been here before since I played the original back in the 90's along with Fallout and saw the old Fallout 3 Van Buren fall by the wayside. Then rumours of Baldurs Gate 3 turned out to be a hack n slash PS2 game. Then the re-master was buggy as all hell. Then the multiplayer was pretty much broken.

That said, I haven't ran into problems with BG2 yet, have yet to install Icewind Dale yet. My playthrough of BG1 was great fun.

Beamdogs content has been okish. I liked Neera the wild mage, the new characters as a whole were pretty good. However, I can't trust them to make a decent BG3, be it inbetween Serevok and Irenicus or before the entire ordeal. The first game was neigh on unplayable when it was released, a game that they could play on a toaster now was so badly optimised that it wouldn't run on half decent systems.

ALSO, for the love of God they need to tell a different story rather than try and continue the story with 1/2. That story has finished, it's one of the best stories in gaming. It doesn't need adding to, its very complete.

TL;DR Beamdog made a glitchy mess of BG1, BG2 seems ok but still have slight issues with multiplayer, I don't trust them not to fuck up BG3.

DAMN I wish they'd give us an oldschool Forgotten Realms RPG, like in the olden days. Pillars of Eternity is awesome, but I love the Realms so much more.

Pillars of eternity was disappointing because of the "original" ruleset. It really felt broken and against the player, despite having a good story.
Hope this one will be the right old-school rpg.

what do you mean with broken?

The ruleset didn't feel "right" to me.
Fighting even the weakest enemies is challening, but that's not a bad thing for some points of view. The main problem is that it feels unbalanced.
The tank/melee warrior deals no damage.
The mages have a short limit of spells and that is bad being the only ones to do some damage.
The healers are the only slightly balanced due to buffs, but even there is a low limit of spells.
You can't rest more than some times, and since almost all fights bring you near death you need to rest a lot, going on and off to shops to buy supply.
The tank is useless since most enemies will rush to crush your backguard(mages, healers). Even having the aggro talent.
There is a cap to EXP you can take from a kind of enemy. Also gold is very hard earned. Still i liked the loot system.

I've played BG, ID, Planescape, neverwinter nights and even newer ones like shadowrun and wastelands 2 but never felt the gameplay so frustrating.

yes. at least for me, it was worth just for the engine upgrade... i could never play it properly and enjoy it.
bg2 was pretty much the same, except that they added some new characters that don't add anything new to the game.
