Because most people like established monopolies and don't like companies who try to break them.

That being said, I don't like EG, but pretty much for the same reason I don't like Steam: it's a freaking annoying DRM that spies on your gaming habits without allowing you to opt-out (not to mention that this should be opt-in in the first place).
