Hmm, none made a thread yet :3

We'll i'm in beta, gonna test it out.

Edit: To start music, you can find it in library in Big Picture mode.
Quality is great. It's fast. UI is simple and easy.
It seems really good. Can't wait for dekstop interface.

Edit 2:
Guys, go http://steamcommunity.com/groups/steammusic/discussions and recommend them which features you want, most of you wanted some streaming/radio stuff, they said they're looking into it, it's just that they don't know which services to use. So yeah, post it there. :D

Edit 3:
If you're not invited into the beta, you can try this:
"just launch Steam with the -steamos parameter and you're good to go" - xarabas

Don't see any point in this unless they provide the music as well. Would be cool to be able to buy music on steam otherwise I do not see much difference between using this or external program.

Why wouldn't you just program hotkeys in your computer to pause/change tracks then run something really low memory like foobar2000 in the background?

Why this, why that.. it's not like you're forced to use this, they're giving you more options, that's it.

What will they think of next, Steam Cooking Show?

THAT would be awesome. I mean, just look at Gabe, I bet the guy could teach us a thing or two about cooking.

For the moment it feels completely redundant. SteamOS has a lot of things to fix before turning its attention to muscic playback. It has to be a solid gaming platform first and it still isn't.

If I don't play on SteamOS or Big Picture, will I still be able to use it?
Sorry if it's a stupid question :P

Already asked in this thread, and it's first thing on Group page -.-'
"Steam Music will soon be in limited beta as a feature of SteamOS and Big Picture mode, with a desktop interface to follow. "
Yes, you will be able to use it, but later.

Seems cool. For those of you wondering why is this a thing - it's primarily made for Steam OS.

Or people who use Big Picture Mode and a controller. My PC is also hooked up to my TV, if I'm playing something with a controller on my TV I have to get up to change the tune :P

Some games also are bitchy when you try to alt tab (or just crash) so it even may be useful in the normal Steam overlay :P

I just hope its going to be some external integration like with last.fm or pandora. I dont care what they do with community profiles as long its not a burden on client, wouldnt want to end up up with some RAM eating bloatware

I like the idea of a music player, but I seriously hope they don't start selling music too.

Listening to non VG music while playing games? That's utterly pointless. Unless you're playing MP games.

F.e. I love listening to music while playing DotA, Dota 2. :3

Gonna edit thread.

Well, I'm surprised that actually worked.

Now I have to wait forever for Steam to build the library...

Edit: Unimpressive. It's nice and smooth, but the player can't differentiate between "artist" and "Artist", it's laggy and slow, and there's no option to take all of the music and shuffle it. Oh well.

this is exactly what I hate. I have an external music app for this exact purpose. why must i now be forced to download a bloated client that also has that capability? Same for steam chat and many other pointless features

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Wait, are you saying steam chat is bad thing or I missed the point?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

not bad, but unnecessary and should be optional to add on or something(for the chat probably checked on by default when you install but able to check off if you wanted. but the music app seems more like it should be an opt in install)

imo Ideally the required client should be able to be stripped down to only exactly what was required for steam's drm not getting larger every update.
bad enough I'm forced to download this to play my physically purchased games do I really need facebook aim windowsmediaplayer ect to play a single player game?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, got it now, yeah, it could be optional, well, the mediaplayer and other stuff. But chat client, overlay, that's what makes Steam useful not incl. deals..
What they should really do is get the actual client a bit faster instead of adding all this new stuff, it used to take up to 1 min to load Steam on Win 7 (It's around 5-10 sec on Win8.1).
Also work a bit on adding more stuff to library and chat.

  • What's the advantage over using software like VLC or similar in the background?
  • It requires SteamOS? Wha ...
  • It requires Big Picture Mode too?

Does need exist?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  • No need for alt-tabbing
  • Nope it doesn't.
  • For now, yes. Dekstop interface coming soon.

What?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

  • What's the problem with alt-tab? Only few games have no support or fuck up.
  • Playlists! No need for tabbing at all.
  • "Steam Music will soon be in limited beta as a feature of SteamOS" so why wouldn't I assume this?
  • I hope so, because they wast majority does probably not even use Big Picture

Yes, does need exist? Considering VLC and other software? It will only play MP3 according to the FAQ while VLC plays everything ever. My favorite format happens to be FLAC, will they support it? Not in the beta right now apparently, if ever? Because a lot of software doesn't coughcough Spotify.

Will it support Last.FM? I don't use this and maybe you aren't using it either, but need exists! VLC supports...

And I'm quoting "No option to play ALL of your music in one big playlist"

Sounds very lacking to me. Beta is beta but good luck beating VLC, the best software around. Ever.

this is targeted for their steamPCs so switching music from a game is seamless. It would be a pain and slow if you alt tab, then select music in a steambox (unless your playlist is perfectly fine and random playback is fine) then go back in-game.

Also just FYI, there's discussion that they will integrate game soundtracks in this as well.

Okay, and congratulations, out of 3 points you got 4. I don't know you managed it, but good job.
Yes, it needs to exist. Not whole world is about you. Some people like it, some people don't. At least they're not forcing you to use it. It's an option. Altho you'll have to download it.
They're gonna add online radio/streaming stuff and more formats. If you looked at discussions you could have seen it.

Sooo...who got their invitation?

1 decade ago
Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

While it is an interesting addition to Steam, there isn't much use for me honestly. I don't play my own music when playing most games because I like doing things the original way (listening to the game's own music and sounds as it was designed to be), with the exception of Dota 2, because I already played it too many times that I experienced that "original way" already.
However, Dota 2 has a "borderless windowed mode" which I use, and I easily tab to desktop within 0.1 secs, faster than shift+tab steam overlay which takes 0.3 secs.

welcome to a bugged Big Picture experience. I uninstalled after about an hour of annoying graphical issues and overlay errors :(

Looking forward to the completed effort, but right now it only works for me if I play music initially and don't try to change the track, browse my library, or even open the overlay.
