I own Assassin's Creed 2, Far Cry 3 and Far Cry Blood Dragon on Steam. Of course, when I launch one of them, the Uplay client automatically starts. Same happens if only Uplay is opened and you try to launch one of them, steam is required as these games were purchased via Steam.

What would happen if I were to buy a boxed version of one of them ? Would Uplay make a distinction between the Uplay/boxed versions and the Uplay+Steam versions, or would it tell me that I already own them ?

Same question but a different order : I plan on preordering Watch Dogs on Uplay - a boxed version. What will happen if I decide... someday, to acquire it on Steam as well ?

edit : two practical cases to help you guys understand my question :

case 1 :
1) I buy AC2 on Uplay or a boxed version. The game is added to my Uplay account.
2) For some reason, let's say steam collector syndrome, I buy AC2 on Steam. The game is added to my Steam library and gives me a key to activate on Uplay.
3) I try to activate on Uplay to play my steam game. What now ?

case 2 :
1) I buy AC2 on Steam. The game is added to my Steam library and gives me a key to activate on Uplay.
2) I launch Uplay and activate on Uplay.
3) For some reason, let's say I like boxes, I decide to buy a boxed edition of AC2.
4) I try to activate this edition's key on Uplay so that I just need Uplay to play, not Steam. What now ?

from what i remember u dont need steam for boxed versions, so yes it will launch only uplay, and if u will want watchdogs for steam also im pretty sure u will have to buy it on steam to have it on it, ofc i may be wrong but im almost sure im not :)

Doesn't help either, I think I didn't make myself clear...

I mean ;
1) buy on Uplay. Game is added to Uplay account
2) want to buy the same game on steam. Pay it, it gives you a Uplay key.
3) what would happen ? Uplay tells you you already have it ?

Why would you buy it twice? Anyway if steam gives you Uplay code I think it will say that you have it already. But if it's added to your steam library than it should be good. (I'm not sure about this but it looks the most logical to me)

I don't mean buying twice in a row, I meant for example after a long period of time, I edited the OP with possible reasons to do so (like boxes or steam collector syndrome)

The moral of the story is, it doesn't seem worth it to buy Ubisoft's games on PC due to Uplay, so it makes more sense to go for console versions (if you have a console)

Thank you for trying to help but I never asked people's opinions about Uplay :-)

I think uPlay wouldn't make distinctions and they would appear as a single game. I think you would still be able to re-activate it, and it would depend where you download the game from (uPlay or Steam). If you download it through Steam, it will require Steam, if you activate the boxed version, only uPlay.

What if I want to buy first one, then the other ? WIll it tell me I already own it ?

I'm not entirely sure, but I think you should be able to. I was able to activate two versions of Silent Hunter 5 (normal one boxed and Gold Edition bought through the uPlay store) without any issues.... but the Gold one replaced the normal one, so maybe it was just because they were different versions.

I would recommend contacting ubisoft for this, I can't find the official answer anywhere...

By the way, Ubisoft has an acceptable support email service. I bought PoP The Forgotten Sands and it didn't appear in my library; contacted them, fixed it, and also gave me a code for the original Sands of Time as compensation.

You can try contacting them to see if it does allow you to enter two different serial codes for each version.

I have Far Cry 3 boxed, Assassin's Creed 3 boxed and then a number of other Ubisoft games as Steam versions. Unfortunately, I've never purchased two copies, but my guess would be that Uplay would not distinguish the difference and would run/update whatever one you installed first/last (because of the way Uplay stores the installation path).

It's possible that your account will say "Game already purchased" or something to that effect, but I don't think it's able to directly differentiate versions.

I own Far Cry 3 on Steam and this is what it looks like on uPlay. So my guess would be that you can have both versions at the same time, don't know for sure though.
