Baldur´s Gate 2 Problem

Hi, about 3 days ago My friend gave me box version of Baldur´s Gate 2 and I have one problem. After starting new game ( Campain of Shadows of Amn) and creating of new hero and few mins of playing I tried to use spell. I clicked on spell button and waited for it to appear. But it didn´t. I tried it few times and in 1 of about 10 tries it appeared. But only for 5 secs and after that I can´t use it and cast any spell. Please, know anyone of you about fix?

What spell? Which spell button? Mages and priests have to add spells to their spellbook first and then sleep a while before they can use a spell.

What spell did you try? Was it always the same spell? Was it of your main character?

Final question...did you patch the boxed version before playing? Patches are still up on the net if the auto patcher does not work.
