A lot of times I want to thank someone, give them a DLC for a game they just won, or simply ask questions that doesn't have anything to do with the thread. Are PMs that bad?

Would you preffer allowing PMs?

PMs are useful and fun.
PMs are only there for creepers and flamers.
I support the Prime Minister.

support doesn't want to suspend more people for inappropriate messages. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Makes sense. I wonder if couldn't be own-moderated though.

If own-moderation would work, then there wouldn't be suspensions for inappropiate behaviour that happens on a public forum :\

Wouldn't it be a great opportunity to blacklist people?

Sometimes I rather would just be ignore how big the cesspool parts of SG stretch :\ having a private message system that would more likely used maliciously than properly is not a good promise for me. Afterall, we all have the linked Steam profile. It just takes 3 clicks (name, link, send friend request) to add someone, or additional 20 seconds to write on their giveaways that you added them on Steam to discuss GA/whatever.

As far as I can recall CG said he didn't like the idea because he beloved private messages would lead to people PMing people begging for games,

That's what the chat on Steam is for, I guess. No need to waste resources on storage for a PM system when the users can just go direct to Steam to talk to one another. It also takes the burden of moderation off the admin's shoulders, which is a plus.

Great question, I have wondered this for years.

Regarding any unintended consequences, that's why you would put in a way to block people.

All of the private messages I receive on other sites are extremely mature and also welcome. None of them are begging for stuff, accusing me of violating peoples safe spaces or committing microaggressions, informing me that I will be punished by Sonic the Hedgehog once scientists are able to open portals to the alternate realities that are the native realms of fictional characters or simply just crudely drawn spurting phalluses. I would absolutely welcome private messages here also.

My dog and my cat used to do that. I tried telling the dog that it could just eat the cat but it never really fully grasped the concept.

As long as they have made a public giveaway (preferably that's already finished) since joining...you could always post a comment there and they'd get a message notification..that's what I do if I want to message someone^^

In the hypothetical case that they add it in the future, it would be better if you could send/receive PM from:

  • reciprocal whitelists
  • friends on Steam
  • the winner to the creator, and vice versa, of a giveaway

And nobody else to prevent spam.

I used to think that PMs would be a nice feature. But over time I've actually come to appreciate the open and public nature that threads encourage and consider it to be part of SG's charm.

Honestly, I could see myself coming back to lurk on the discussion boards here and there even if I took an extended break from Steam / gaming.

I'd be OK with PMs if it was something you could opt-in or out of
