This is just an observation but does anyone else find it a little amusing when people say that they are a gamer/hardcore gamer?

It like saying, "I'm a hardcore reader" or "I'm a hardcore movie watcher", although that last one could sound like you enjoying watching porno.

Well, hardcore sounds much more pleasant than "I'm obsessed with books" or "I'm obsessed with gaming" etc. Because yeah, someone who is hardcore tends to be towards unhealthily obsessed with something.

you cant simply be an all around hardcore gamer, you cant go hardcore on all games. you play "a" game or "two" on hardcore level.

people who say they are hardcore are just trying to compensate for being fat and unemployed.

I know people who take pride in their extensive knowledge of movies. Though they probably wouldn't call themselves "hardcore" because they aren't 12 years old or drunk frat boys.

I think the "hardcore" versions of book and movie fans are called hipsters anyways.

Just because someone enjoys reading doesn't mean they are hipsters.

If you don't know why someone might have a negative opinion of "hipsters", then you don't know what a "hipster" is. I repeat, I'm not going to explain what a hipster is to you. Sorry. Look it up yourself, draw your own conclusions.

Just the same way someone else might have a negative opinion on gamers. That doesn't mean it's a bad thing to be a gamer. It only is a matter of opinion not an actual fact. And you have yet to give me an actual reason why being a hipster is a bad thing.

You don't have to have a negative opinion of gamers, or hipsters, to understand why someone might. As to why I might think being a hipster is a "bad thing", there's a stereotype floating around that hipsters are pretentious. Having an undeservedly high opinion of themselves, usually for nothing more than the fact they have the funds (likely from their parents) to follow absurd fads better than anyone else. Binging on steady diets of indie films, indie music and abhorring anything "mainstream" or "popular" regardless of actual quality. The trendy non-conformist.

That's not to say any ol' vegan in a plaid collared shirt, a porkpie hat and stylishly thick glasses does this, or feels this way... but please don't tell me that the stereotype has absolutely no truth around it. At least not moreso than that of the "hardcore gamer".

Theres a word for people who are hardcore into movies, its Cinephile, which if someone wants to get technical its someone who loves movies but thats not how its used, its used on those obsessive people who know every actors filmography by heart and can play 7 degrees of seperation with Kevin Bacon and get better Bacon numbers than the Google results (give that a shot btw if you've never tried, google any actors name with Bacon Number after it).

But really Gamerphile, Viddaphile, Digital-multimediaphile all sound weird to the ear, which doesn't make them wrong it just make them new and different. People always resist change, so in 50 years people will probably call it something other that being a hardcore gamer but it thats how language works. Its kind of silly to rail against the evolution of terms because; you're one person, there are billions of people on this planet who do the same things as you but you will never interact with, neither your or their choice on terminology is more or less valid.

There is only communication, so if someone says hardcore gamer and you knew what they meant then super, communication success. Its the people who say Oh yeah I'm a hardcore gamer, I play CoD all day. F*#@ those people.

Usually, "hardcore gamer" refers to people who play "real" games, like LoL, Starcraft II, etc. In other words, MOBA games or CS-like games.

It sounds absolutely absurd and retarded, but alas, a lot of gamers have gotten that sense of mentality, which is unfortunate, because you know, any other game isn't really a "man's game", apparently, which I find to be awful and absurd.

I use it to emphasis that video games are not just something I do to pass time, it is something I am quite passionate about. Everyone has something, like some really love reading, but I am that way for video games. Not "I play 'serious games" hardcore, but that I play many and a huge variety, including consoles, with rarely any discrimination (I really hate EA and Microsoft, I try to avoid them... try). I think anyone that generalizes people that refers to themselves as hardcore to be twelve-year-olds or retarded need to take a look in the mirror. Book-worms have a term, as do gamers. For gamers, it is "hardcore gamers" as is movie goers is for movie viewers. It would be strange to say game-worms, or book goers, etc. Gamers, readers, etc. each have their own slang to show how serious they are in it.

"Hardcore" gamers are people who really care for the games, and they always want to improve. Then there are casuals who always say "it's just a game brah" It is fine to not take things as seriously as the other guy, but please stop with the damn cliches to excuse how terrible you are at video games.
