It took me 7.2 hours, have I done anything wrong? On howlongtobeat it says rushed 9h, so how did I manage this? The game is really good, but I didn't get to choose the ending :(

You did chose the ending by your actions towards little sisters.

Yep. I think I harvested 2 and rescued the rest, got the ending with sad tone. But the real question is, how come I completed the game in 7.2 hours when HowLongToBeat says average is 12 hours? Have I rushed?

Maybe you don't explore and find secrets passages and extra weapons.

Probably not. :P

these playtimes are just wrong...

people play on many diferent ways, so you can't go after these stats...

It's usually surprisingly accurate for me. Especially the popular games with more data.

If you want to know what the absolute fastest completion time of a game is, you'd really have to look for a speedrun. The current WR (World Record) is this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5O6e3DkAeo . It's 44:21. So... 7.2 hours is kind of short (you must have not explored everything), but completely doable :P

You have to remember, this game came out nearly 10 years ago. The new/innovative aspects of Bioshock have been replicated over many times in the past decade. So, while you may have never played the game itself, you are more familiar with the tasks and "flow" of the game and overall structure. It may only be on a subconscious level, but you are more attuned to the gameplay simply by being an active gamer since '07.

That's a good point. Although HowLongToBeat combines newer gameplay with older gameplay scores.

Played on hard and 18 hours. Of course I saved all the little sisters, solved puzzles by hand (not by skipping), controlled all sorts of turrets and stuff, explored around and messed around (sometimes I would just do stupid things and waste time).

What do you mean by solved puzzles and not skipping? Like no auto-hacks?

the hacking thing yeah. I think the difficulty of them is different on harder as well. Not sure though

Bioshock is a game that you have to know everything in order to understand the story, so I think they played poorly Bioshock.

Woah you musta like just dashed threw that game.

7 hours. Did you listen to the audio stuff at all? Maybe that's how you finished so fast? I personally stood in one place when listening to it (to not get hear grunts of people attacking me and such).

I listened to all the diaries I could find. I had subtitles on, so I could kill some splicers at the same time as listening to the diary :)

40 hours for me T_T I don't know why, but it uses to take me the double of time to finish games than most people. I suppose it is similar to when I read a manga, I like looking at the details of the drawings, not just reading the texts.

Tell me about this :D Back when it was released I was playing Bioshock for almost a year until I finished it. I'm not sure how many real hours did it take, but I was playing not every day and usually not more than 1 hour... Of course I was exploring everything, finding all the secrets and so on and so on. So yeah, I can relate. Probably something around 40 hours for me as well, I hope not much more, cause it actually sounds frightening.

I'm glad there are more like me, who spend way longer on games than all the stats show. :) I'm not sure how long it took me, but I'm now at the point where I just double the statistical playthrough time to estimate how much I will get out of game. :)

The question is........why do you care what howlongtobeat's stats are? You plan on being a speedrun champion?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, quite the opposite really. I want to see how long the others have played and see if I've rushed it through, which isn't good, I guess.

Time shouldn't really matter too much, in my opinion.

If you enjoyed the game, and understood the plot, then it's alright to take even less than 7 hrs to finish. However, BioShock is also a very atmospheric game. You're supposed to feel a little claustrophobic in this huge underwater city. A slower playthrough may help add some immersion.

I guess it is something about the achievements. When there's no achievements, I tend to just rush through the games. I'll start playing BioShock 2 tonight, which has achievements, and that one is going to take a lot longer to complete.

If you feel like replaying the first, wait until the remastered version gets patched up and play that - that version has achievements

I'm the type of player that explores everything and takes twice as long as the average player to beat a game. It says the average user completes Shadow Warrior in 12h40m. I have complete 13 of the 17 chapters and I have already been playing for 21 hours. Maybe that is why I am finding this game boring and repetitive, because I am spending too much time in it.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Uh, i understand you. I finished shadow warrior in 9 hours, but it was mix of amuzement of boredom, playing it for 21 hours ? i can't imagine that.

Replay it and this time try and look at every minute detail, the placement of random doodads the notes, the sound design etc. because Bioshock and Infinite have a lot of story hidden like that. Same with System Shock 2 if you ever play it.

I always play games really slow. I look at everything, read everything etc. My walkthrough of Bioshock took 28 hours. Although it's possible some of that is idling.

I tried playing bioshock like 3-4 times but after few minutes my head starts to hurt is that normal? i never had problem with any other game.

Bioshock was notorious for having a pretty bad FOV, which gave a lot of people headaches or made them feel nauseous.

Man you are a life saver, i set fov to 120 as i have a wide screen display, the view is now great and its not straining my eyes anymore, Thanks a lot ^^

Wow, never played something at 120 before. Isn't it super warped? The usual FOV people use is 90-100 from what I've heard, but hey if it works for you that's great.
Glad to hear you can finally play one of my favourite series of all time :D

See for yourself, resolution is 1600x900 as my quadro is unable to maintain a constant 60fps at 1920x1080 if everything is set to high

Sounds really fast, and you say you listened to diaries and all, so maybe Steam's hour count just glitched? I know for sure that's happened to me in the past.

Also, did you deviate from the main path at all? Like check smaller rooms and optional areas?

Comment has been collapsed.

it takes me much longer to play through games than howlongtobeat stats will say. First off, I'm not very good at alot of games, so there's that, but I like to look around and explore world too, usually more than the fighting stuff which sometimes irritates me because it gets in the way of exploring. But the world has to be rich for that to work, but if the developer puts alot into the world I like looking around, and am actually a bit disappointed if the extra exploring isn't rewarded in some ways.

Same here. I love exploration in games more than anything else! Side quests and hidden places ftw. That's why I play RPG games so rarely cause they can take me weeks and sometimes months (Gothic 3 for example lol, 3 months, such a huge world).

Permalink

yeah, I love finding those hidden places - or even places that I'm not supposed to be able to get to - like finding a way to climb around barrier and get "behind the scenes".
