Giveaway over. Solution is posted here

For people who use linux. For a linux-compatible game. Awesome!

Don't share hints. If you need to know what's wrojng with your answer, or have an answer that fits but isn't accepted, talk to me in my groupchat.

Edit: there is no need to type 'txz' anywhere.

Edit 2: Here's a free hint for #1 for no particular reason: If you've used/run IRC bots in the past, you probably know about one of the oldest ones around. Reading the help for this program can get you one of the answers (I actually gave it two options because I've seen two signals used for this).

Edit 3: Oops. I forgot to mention that I set $0.01 contrib on it.

Edit 4: Hint: The image is not just an image.

Question three is complete nonsense.

No it isn't. You don't technically need linux for this one, either. As for the resuling answer--I created the file layout shown in it and ran the commands to make sure they worked as they should. Which part in particular are you saying is nonsense?

Edit: I just recreated the archive exactly as described and uploaded it here. My solution works perfectly on it. All non-archive files are blank; only README has any content.

That's relevant to question 2. chronicdiscord was talking about question 3.

my bad. If you run uname with either of two parameters (the correct one or the one that shows all details), it includes a 3-letter acronym.

If you use linux on the command line, you should know how to look things up. I'm constantly looking up how to do one thing or another.

Maybe I misunderstood what I'm looking for, but the Q4 answer seems to vary depending on the linux version you're using.
Q2, can we use pipelines?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

there's one common command around. PM me the command you're using on steam (I added you).

Edit: pipelines

Edit 2: I just realized the name of the painting might make that unclear. The pipe was a hint, not the name (yes, you can use them)

Add me and PM me the command. if it's good, I'll create a second puzzle to give the answer I had to anyone else that gets your answer, because I'm too lazy to recreate my first puzzle.

I guess you weren't logged in when you made the puzzle? Then I think you could edit it.

I can honestly say I didn't notice that feature at all until just now, after I saw this comment.

Never used Linux (excluding the brief period of time I used Ubuntu on my last laptop before it died), so I won't be solving this anytime soon.

Free bump for people who live, breathe, and sleep Linux!

Giving up for now, hoping that Q2 will become significantly easier 66 hours later.

:D

Part 2 should be pretty simple. Others have done similar things in these forums. The program I named may help a bit.

Y631j is a hash. It may be used for a different reason though... I honestly don't remember which hash I used, so if you care to pm me on steam, lemme know what I need for a hint.

I'm not supposed to share hints, but I was stuck for a while in the same place. There was one key word in the question that I overlooked.

Been using Linux for over 5 years now (in fact I'm typing this on Linux) and can't answer anything...

I couldn't answer any of it off the top of my head either (well, except the first one because I've had to use it rather a lot). I would expect someone to maybe have some experience with reading manpages.

Hint for #2 if you're still stuck:

use -O.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I got uname: invalid option -- 'O' the same for Ubuntu Desktop, Server, and Debian RasbPi.
The cloest I've got is -o and is not the right ans.

Edit: sorry, I got confused.

that's strange. Have you tried them in the order listed on the puzzle?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, he is right, uname doesn't have an O option, tar on the other hand does.

I'm stuck on #2 as well, and I'm even using O two times and omitted txz from my solution...

Btw I am repeating three options two times as well.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You need to omit more than just 'txz', you need to omit the whole filename. He wasn't saying uname doesn't have that option, he was saying he got uname.

Are you sure that only 2 arguments are repeated in #2? I have a working solution, but with 3 repeated arguments, and of course it isn't accepted

Hello. I tried to solve the puzzle too late and got everything but the last step. Do you want post the solution? What did you after the cpio archive?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Quiz:

Q1: SIGHUP or the less-common HANGUP

Q2: tar -xjOf slyfox-dev.tbz2 | tar -xJO slyfox/README > ../slyfox-README.txt

Q3: Symmetric Multiprocessing or Symmetric Multiprocessor

Q4: lsb_release --codename

Q5: GNU's Not Unix!

Post-Quiz:

The image contained a CPIO file that contained a file saying simply xAsf0. You actually could get this from winrar if you used the viewer.

This referred you to this forum post, which told you that string you're looking for is "eLqfM." Or is it?

This in turn meant that the giveaway (which was for bastion) was located here, giveaway hash eLqfM.

Thank you for posting the solution. Not bad puzzle, I liked the part with tar especially. Now I feel less bad since that last step was something I already solved in others puzzle, so maybe it was just a question of time and motivation.
